Season One DVD Review Thread

Just a thread for people to leave comments on the newest dvd box set available. I haven't received mine yet but it's ordered, so hopefully I'll be able to post my own review soon.
Well I guess what most people seem to want to know about is the following:
- Bonus features
- What you think of box design/thickness etc.
- Quality
- Any edits to episodes that were not there when that particular episode was originally broadcast in the US.

And basically your overall opinion, I'm sure there are many people on this forum wanting to know a little more about the dvds before they buy them.

i didn't bother buying it because of the fact that it didn't include the following things

1. the japanese version with subs
2. the banned dratini episode (porigon episode not required due to them never even getting it)
3. the beauty and beach episode with brest scene restored

if they had included those things, and mabey have the japanese openings and endings then i might have considered buying them. so i guess i can't review them

So? The first season had a decent dub - it hardly had music replacement and most of the paint edits were translations of Japanese text (and if it was a case where it was not, at least in was in an actual language). Not buying them because they don't have "Japanese with subs" (which would be utterly impossible to include in the boxset) and the "Beauty and The Beach" episode containing Kojirou with fake breasts (which would sound stupid if it was restored - hearing the old voices one minute and then hearing the new ones the next) is just plain retarded.

OK, I finally have the box set. First of all, I have to say that I don't think the box art is that bad, it's a simple design, and quite obvious that the designers have just pasted standard images of Ash, Brock and Misty onto a coloured background, but it works quite well. The back of the box however, contains very little information, just a summary sentence and a few more standard poke-pics. Unfortunately, the cases are ordinary dvd cases, making for a fairly chunky box set, but attractive nontheless.
The dvd menus have a pleasing layout, with the usual play all or select episode choice. When selecting an episode, you can also choose whether you want to watch it from the beginning or halfway through.
Unfortunately, the episodes themselves don't come with a japanese language track, but I guess most fans wouldn't speak japanese anyway, and with up to nine episodes on each disc, they need to save space. Other than that the episodes are great, and it gives you a real nostalgic feel to watch episodes that put pokemon on the map back when kids used to fight over charizard shiny cards.
I couldn't help but laugh at myself sometimes, remembering how we all wondered what that bird was that flew over the rainbow in the first episode!
Anyway, I think that this dvd is well worth buying for any anime collector, and have to give it an excellent 8/10.

I'm still waiting for mine to arrive in the mail. Should be in any day now.

Is the video quality at least a little better than the Master Quest box set?

I have an watched the first two episodes so far. The quality is better than when aired on TV for the first time. I,don't have master quest boxset yet so I can't make any comparison... Sorry. ;025;

I'm insanely happy that they decided to release the first season (part of it) in a nice, big collection. I still don't understand why they bother releasing one volume at a time for Advanced Challenge. *sigh* I can't say I particularly care about there being no special features (although it'd be nice), but since most Pokemon DVDs hardly (or never) include any, what do you expect?

Does the DVD have "Beauty and the Beach" at all?

Anyway, I don't mind them not having the original Japanese version of the episodes as much as I mind them not keeping the original openings and endings. After all, there's no legal way to hear them unless it requires going to Japan.

I've been thinking of getting this for Christmas, especially if the quality is as good as the people here are claiming it to be. :)

Though, I find it odd that they didn't somehow include the Dratini episode dubbed. I think someone mentioned it once that 4Kids actually dubbed it yet they simply never put it on the air? If this is true, then they really should have included it as an extra. I'm sure that alone would spark some more interest in the fans that want to see it. ::Shrug::

Why do people think the Dratini episode would even be on this set, anyway? The Legend of Dratini is Episode 035...this set only contains 001-026.
