SeeDs

Balamb Garden has long since stood out as the premier academy for training SeeDs - specialized elite mercenaries hired by clients to engage in various tasks. Any student who wishes to enter the academy is accepted, though there is no guarantee that they will all become SeeDs. To achieve the rank of SeeD, a strictly examined test must be taken and passed. These tests are actually SeeD missions where testes accompany SeeD mercenaries on the job. Because the tests are so harshly examined, only a small percentage of each testing group actually pass. Students who fail the exam are welcome to remain in the academy, hone their skills, and try again.

SeeDs and prospective SeeDs are trained at Balamb Garden in a variety of combat styles and arts. Hand to hand combat, weapon training, magic use, and summoning are all courses which may be taken. There is no set curriculum as Balamb Garden is an academy, not a school, though there are stills tests and exams and formal instruction. Students may take many different kinds of courses or choose to specialize in one area.

Balamb Garden comes fully equipped with dormitories, libraries, many classrooms, quads, an infirmary, cafeteria, training grounds, and more. Whenever students are free of class obligations, they are free to do as they wish, so long as their activities do not violate academy rules. There is nothing like a summer break, however, as Balamb Garden is a full time commitment. It is not a school, but elite training for a profession. Students do get weekends off, however, for SeeDs, nothing is certain. SeeDs continue to live in the Garden, but upon achieving the SeeD rank, a student is said to be "graduated." They are now at the Garden's full disposal and must commit themselves to the job.

__

That said, in this RPG, players will be playing students at Balamb Garden. There is no real plot in the sense that there is a story with an ultimate goal. Instead, players will take a SeeD exam and be part of a SeeD squadron and be at the Garden's disposal for various missions. For the first bit, however, there will be a bit of open ended time as the players being students and doing as they wish at the Garden.

As you may notice, this is an RPG incorporating elements of Final Fantasy VIII. No knowledge of Final Fantasy VIII is needed, as I am only taking the aspects of the Garden and SeeD mercenaries from it.

The Garden

Balamb Garden is divided into annexes. The North Annex includes the Dormitories and Cafeteria. The West Annex is made up of the Infirmary and the Quad. The East Annex consists of the Training Grounds and the Library. The South Annex holds the Parking Lot and the huge hangars which hold SeeD vehicles. Classrooms are dispersed throughout the entire grounds. The Headmaster's office is on the top floor, and is accessible only if authorized. The Headmaster's name is Headmaster Dican.

All students at Balamb Garden are taught in the field of magic. There are ten types of magic: Black, White, Fire, Water, Earth, Wind, Thunder, Ice, Poison, and Void. You may choose one element to have mastery over. Magic will upgrade as you progress. Keep in mind that though there is no form of mana or magic power, excessive magical use will drain energy from the user.

Black Level 1 - Drain, Blind
White Level 1 - Cure, Protect
Fire Level 1 - Fire, Confuse
Water Level 1 - Water, Silence
Earth Level 1 - Quake, Slow
Wind Level 1 - Aero, Float
Thunder Level 1 - Thunder, Stun
Ice Level 1 - Blizzard, Sleep
Poison Level 1 - Bio, Esuna
Void Level 1 - Demi, Haste

Elements are paired off into opposing elements, which have increased effect when used against each other. (That is, if a creature has a specific element associated to it, the opopsing spell will do more damage).

Black <-> White
Fire <-> Water
Earth <-> Wind
Thunder <-> Ice
Poison <-> Void

If you want to know what a spell does, ask, because a lot of it is self explanatory and I don’t feel like writing them all out. You can decide on the spell animation, but keep in mind these are low level spells.

Guardian Forces: Guardian Forces (GFs is a creatures that can be summoned by anyone who has found and created a bond with one. A bond is usually created simply by the person besting the GF in some sort of challenge, combat or not. Guardian Forces can also be obtained by having someone "give" another the GF. When summoning a GF, a person must focus, for summoning works by calling to another plane where the GF resides. The GF then answers the call and appears before its master and releases its attack.

Guardian Forces only last for their one attack. Afterwards, they exit the plane and return to their own until they are summoned again. The longer a person is bonded with a GF, the quicker they can answer the transdimensional call.

I will provide a list of level one GFs, including a name, picture, attack name, and attack description. As more GFs are obtained, I'll probably let you guys create the attacks, but I'll start things off. Like spells, keep in mind that these GFs are level one, so their attacks aren't going to be super powerful, though they are better than a single spell.

You may choose one GF. It doesn't need to match your chosen element. For size visualizations and descriptions, all of the following GFs are 4-6 feet long/tall, so they aren't huge at all.

Xabuu
Void Level 1
Attack: Black Star
Attack Description: Xabuu regurgitates a pulsating black star which explodes in void energy, effecting a small target area.

Rimtash
Poison Level 1
Attack: Corrosive Slime
Attack Description: Rimtash sprays an area with acidic slime that covers a small target area. The slime remains even after he leaves, however.

Vargil
Black Level 1
Attack: Dread Shriek
Attack Description: Vargil releases a shriek that manifests as a greenish light and strikes a small target area with unholy damage.

Shalas (Taken)
White Level 1
Attack: Silver Feathers
Attack Description: Shalas releases a shower of glimmering feathers that do not damage enemies, but heal the wounds of allies in a small target area.

Fasticor
Water Level 1
Attack: Pulse Horn
Attack Description: Fasticor projects rays of water energy from his horns that disrupt a small target area.

Infurus (Taken)
Fire Level 1
Attack: Seething Blaze
Attack Description: Infurus releases a concentrated blast of flames from his mouth that scorch a small target area.

Formos
Wind Level 1
Attack: Swarm Kill
Attack Description: Formos releases a blast of wind accompanied by a swarm of buzzing insects, inflicting wind damage to a small target area.

Geshrok (Taken)
Earth Level 1
Attack: Dust Devil
Attack Description: Geshrok conjures a buffeting blast of sand, dust, rock, and grit, that ravages a small target area.

Javeris (Taken)
Thunder Level 1
Attack: Arc Lightning
Attack Description: Javeris blasts out lightning that arcs and writhes around a small target area.

Vespar
Ice Level 1
Attack: Snowdrift
Attack Description: Vespar conjures a small avalanche of snow and ice that deals ice damage to a small target area.

As for weapons, you can use a medieval-type weapon (swords, axes, and what not), or modern ones (guns are allowed). Gunblades are also permitted, which is the SeeD archetypical weapon - a blade attached to the handle and trigger of a gun. Regardless of what you pick, nothing magical or special is allowed.

Night Terror
*uses Recycle*

Name: Maverick Sly
Gender: Male
Age: 20
Description: Tall, with a semi-muscular build, his navy blue hair is trimmed short, but several long, untamed strands stick out over his fringe. He's pale skinned, and his eyes are a deep blue like his hair. He wears three pieces of armour. A chest plate, greaves and gauntlets. The greaves and gauntlets are only padding, and all the armour is hidden under his clothes. Camouflage style, grey/blue trousers and black boots make up his regular clothing. When he's not studying or doing something important, he wears a plain white vest and a regular scruffy old jacket. When there are things to be done, the vest is replaced by a charcoal long sleeved t-shirt, and a jacket of the same pattern as his trousers. More often than not, he is seen with a bandana tied around his head, keeping his hair out of his face.

Personality: Maverick is pretty laid back about a lot of things, except his work, which he takes so seriously than anyone else who is messing about more often than not has to deal with his anger and frustration. He likes things done properly or not at all, and expects everyone to work as hard as he does at accomplishing their goals. Having said that, when he's in his own free time, Maverick is a great personality, and is happy to sit and chat with anyone of any age or background. He doesn't discriminate against anyone, and even if he shows anger towards them, he wont hold it as a grudge. Maverick isn't afraid of a bit of pain. "It tells you you're still alive" he always says.

History: Maverick's grandfather was a SeeD, who specialised in using guns. Maverick's father before him did not follow in his footsteps, so he took it upon himself to continue the tradition. Maverick, or 'Sly' as he is usually called, was helped through the entrance exams by his grandfather, a known and respected SeeD, now retired. As a child, Sly was bullied and he bottled up the pain for a long time. Since he toughened up he learnt to deal with pain in his own way, he spent time learning basic first aid as oppose to healing magic.

Weapon: Sniper Rifle. Also carries a Handgun and a small, about 4 inch long Knife. All are jet black, and the Knife can be attached to the end of the Rifle (though it doesn't look like it from the image).
Magic Type: Earth
Guardian Force: Geshrok
Other: Sly spends his time carving things out of wood, partially following in his own father's footsteps as a carpenter. He uses his knife to make a variety of things. He knows basic first aid, and isn't very magically inclined.

Name: Selena Burren
Gender: female
Age: 19

Description: Of a tallish height, Selena is about five-foot ten with reddish brown hair. She keeps her hair in a braided ponytail that hangs down to about a quarter of the way down her back. Her cool green-hazel eyes hold a twinkle of determination and a touch of intellect intertwined with each other. Her upper attire is just a simple burgundy polo-styled shirt with two arm stockings of the same color - though they tend to act as all around bow duster and extra armor when firing. The leather bracers she owns are placed over those, rather than under. Selena wears a pair of jet cargo pants that she's modified to end right at the midpoint of her shins. The tops of her light gray socks poke out above her jet combat boots. To the casual onlooker, her boots seem to be a smidge oversized, when they really aren't.

Personality: Selena is one to push herself to her limits, ignorant of her own condition. Whether it's an exam or drill, she'll perform as best as she is capable of. It does make her narrow-focused in her tasks, only paying attention to what she believes to be important in completing the task. Her vision of the world is near pure black and white, with very few shades of gray between: it's either success in failure, no partials. She takes failures hard, even though it follows her everywhere and has mishaps that happen just as often as successes. Repeated sub-par performance - in her eyes - does turn her away from doing so again until she feels comfortable with herself. Selena isn't open with others; living by her "work first" attitude, she's somewhat isolated from those who can procrastinate. She uses her attitude to keep the overly happy people at bay and hope they lose interest in talking with her. While recluse, she will fight back if she feels threatened for if she's had it with whatever it is bothering her. When she feels she's done as much as she can with the work doled to her, only then will she take up some kind of activity, given she's not sleeping.

History: Selena grew up in a family that wanted a better life for her than them. However, it came at a price: failure was not tolerated well. They drilled it into her that failure was not allowed, and she tried her best to appease them to the point of decreased health. Driven more by fear of what they could do to her, she would continue pushing her limits. Yet she was also become so absorbed in her task, she would make small errors.

Weapon: longbow http://wizards.com/dnd/images/wl_gallery/90255.jpg The bow is a couple inches over six feet. The grip is made of alternating layers of crossing leather strips for good grip. The bow is of yew wood and has been stained black. A light coat of laminate/varnish has been placed on it to protect against the elements. At each end of the leather work and extending to the tips, it's decorated with ivy leaf knotwork, though it's not much different from the wood in color.

Magic Type: Wind

Guardian Force: Infurus

Other (equipment, etc.): Leather bracers for her wrists, small backpack with a small knife - too small for any form of combat, trail rations, and a side quiver attached to hold her arrows. It may be removed to function as a separate item in battle. Selena is a bit of a klutz, especially once she uses her longbow, sometimes fumbling with arrows or the bow itself. Every so often, she'll trip herself up in her own bow, due to it being several inches taller than her.

Name: Eljin Connor
Gender: male
Age: 21
Description: A strong, healthful young man possessing a rather lithe, agile body build, height reaching up to about 6'2. Unkempt strands of coppery hair disorderly fall out from all directions, only too often obscuring his vision. Queer, slightly slanted eyes of charcoal gray nicely blends with his fair complexion. His face is marginally chiseled with years of arduous obstacles regarding SeeD. His outfit consists of a more modernized version of a tunic, hems replaced with a new set of gray pants. A shortened, black version of a 'cloak' drapes down his shoulders, stopping just above the waist. Stout, brown boots finish it off.
Personality: A light-hearted, easily humored guy. Eljin maintains a sufficiently high intelligence and discreetly holds a rather exuberant phraseology. His analytical mind capacity absorbs a more ample magnitude of understanding of the current situation at hand. Despite this apparent gifted mind, Eljin cultivates a modest, nonchalant character, brushing away compliments with a single gesture of a hand. He is perfectly quiescent at various times of pandemonium of panic, thus securing him as an invaluable asset. His disposition is naturally amicable, willing to compromise when needed, also elusively breaking away from unpleasant circumstances or procrastinating important assignments - a poorly developed habit of his. If concentrated, however, Eljin is a quick learner and adapts to new environments readily.
History: Eljin had a relatively average childhood. His parents did nothing significant or out of context, although they did obligingly hire a fencing teacher. His brother, on the other hand, and failed the SeeD entrance exam a few years back, which eventually motivated Eljin to at least attempt on passing. Although not especially dexterous regarding physical strength and taking the offense, Eljin was more prone on healing, aiding others in need, as well as his proficiently handled fencing, which all turned out to be enough in the end.
Weapon: Twin rapiers, both light and durable for usage.
Magic Type: White
Guardian Force: Shalas
Other (equipment, etc.): A standard, very simple 'first-aid' kit sort of styled bag.

Hadouken!
My apologies, but I really don't know much of anything about FFVIII, but from what you stated in the first post it's not really required, I'd assume.

Name: Kumori Hikaru
Gender: Male
Age: 18
Description: Kumori is of slightly above-average height for a man of his age, and has a muscular yet thin build. His hair is a dark shade of brown, and somewhat long, being spiked up though not at all messy. His deep eyes are the exact same shade of dark brown as his hair, or at least very close to it. His facial expression is more or less always the same; at any given moment he appears calm and ready for anything. Though his eyes seem locked in a perpetual glare on the, he surprisingly never appears hostile or angry, just confident.

Kumori’s attire is somewhat simple, actually. He’s basically always wearing a long-sleeved, crimson jacket which reaches just below his waste, with a black cross on the back. The jacket is always open, as well, revealing his black sleeveless undershirt, though the jacket makes it impossible to tell that it‘s actually sleeveless. An ordinary brown belt separates his undershirt from his black pair of pants, which reach down to his ankles. Covering his feet is a pair of red and black shoes with spikes on the bottom to help him run and come to a halt faster. In addition, Kumori always wears a golden cross around his neck, and is never, as in never, seen without it. It’s obvious he doesn’t wear it for religious reasons, but asking him will simply result in him changing the subject or denying that it has any significance.

Personality: Kumori never gives up and never gives in under any circumstances. He simply won’t accept failure, put bluntly. His will of steel helps him out a lot, because it helps him to prevail in situations others would deem hopeless. It’s not as though he’s a hopelessly optimistic moron, however. He does realize that sometimes the odds are against him, and fully understands the risk he takes when he steps onto the battlefield.

Kumori is also seemingly unshakable, and always has a calm demeanor. He never takes ’because I said so’ as a reason to back down, and doesn’t fall for any tricks meant to psyche him out. He has a tendency to laugh in the face of death itself, not giving any regard to his own safety when in an important fight. He’ll gladly put his own life on the line over and over again. This goes double for those who he cares about, as well. True, he doesn’t exactly express his emotions, but when he cares for someone, they know it somehow.

This brings me to another point of Kumori’s personality. It’s true that he tries his best to protect the ones he cares for, but often times he takes things too far. No, I don’t mean he’s overprotective of his friends. What I mean is, if a friend of his is mortally wounded in the field of battle, and he could’ve done ANYTHING to prevent it (including taking the attack himself), he’ll become enraged and take all of the blame upon himself. He’ll swear revenge on whoever injured this person and most likely go into battle recklessly and without any sort of plan, with the thought of vengeance the only thing on his mind. It’s true that normally he isn’t afraid to die in battle, but it ordinarily doesn’t go that far.

History: Kumori’s father, Kage Hikaru, was a very skilled SeeD, though he didn’t push Kumori in the slightest to become one himself, which is what the young boy respected him for the most. It was true that he was an incredible fighter and swordsman, and would more than likely make a fine SeeD himself, but his father had always said to everyone he met “if my son never sets foot inside the Academy, it’ll be okay with me.” His mother was the same way. His parents weren’t interested in raising a SeeD, they were interested in raising Kumori. This took an incredible amount of pressure off of Kumori, which probably contributed to how quickly he learned to fight, along with his natural talent for it. The thought of becoming a SeeD crossed Kumori’s mind a few times, and did seem quite interesting, though it was never his dream or anything.

Then one day, things took a turn for the worst. Kumori’s father was killed on the battlefield, something which Kumori knew very well could happen any day of his life. Nonetheless, this literally destroyed Kumori from the inside-out. His own father, the one who’d always loved him unconditionally no matter what he should decide to become, was gone. It took a while for it to sink in…that Kumori would never see his father again, but once it did, Kumori had made up his mind one hundred percent- one day, he was going to become a great SeeD as his father was before him. No. Matter. What. Taking on his father’s Gunblade, Kumori trained twice as hard to become a powerful fighter and, one day, a SeeD. Perhaps the death of his father is what lead to Kumori’s inability to accept the suffering of those he cares about, but nobody knows for sure.

Being the person he was, Kumori also swore to take revenge on the one who killed his father. Even though he had no idea who’d done it, he knew he would someday. From that moment on, he’d had his heart set on one dream and one dream alone; becoming a SeeD in his father’s honor and taking revenge on the one who killed him. He never once strayed away from that dream, enlisting in the Academy without hesitation. As he enlisted, he looked up to the sky and said to himself firmly “I know you’d be proud of me either way…but this is the path I choose for myself. This is my destiny, and I wouldn’t have it any other way!”

Weapon: Kumori’s weapon is the Gunblade that once belonged to his father. Kage Hikaru named it 'Genocide' the day he recieved it, so thusly Kumori calls it by that name as well. Naturally, the weapon is very important to Kumori, having once belonged to his father, and he protects it with his life. In reality, Genocide it the only thing Kumori has to remember his father by.

Magic Type: Black
Guardian Force: Vargil
Other (equipment, etc.): Though Kumori's weapon, the Gunblade, is used as both a long and short-ranged weapon, he’s first and foremost a swordsman. He does make a decent sharpshooter in some cases, but it’s certainly not his primary method of battle. Though he is quite apt at wielding magic and (to a lesser extent) hand-to-hand combat.

Also, Kumori’s sense of hearing has been trained to be top-notch. This is so, in case he’s blinded by some sort of magic, he’ll still be able to fight the opponent off until the effect wears off. It’s not like he has superhuman hearing, but his hearing is good enough to help him out in case his sight is disabled so he isn’t completely hopeless.

One more note about him. It might seem like he’s going to be one of those ‘Emo Avenger Puppies’ who keeps going on about his tragic past, but he’s really not. He doesn’t obsess over his father, and he’s not angsty, he just usually maintains a calm demeanor is all. His lust for avenging his father’s death will only come into effect if and only if he comes face-to-face with the man who killed his father, though he may bring up the fact that his father is dead once in a while.

Shadowfaith

Shinigami...
Name: Kalima Hitachi (Kali for short)

Gender: Female

Age: Seventeen

Description: Kali has long flowing black hair, which reaches down just past her lower back. Ruby red eyes glisten from within the folds of the midnight black mass and these darkened features lay in contrast with her ghostly pale skin. She wears a pair of dark baggy jeans, which cascade and flare at the bottoms to cover heavy black vans, and accompanying her unique look is a black crop top and a three quarter length trench coat (which she only wears on cold days), which stops just above her knees. Accessories include a mass of silver pendants hanging around her neck, each one symbolizing an element, though the collection is incomplete, she is still searching for the remainder of the bunch. Her arms are racked with multiple bracelets of different textures, and around her waste are two leather belts, clasped with silver. Another addition to her outfit is the leather belt that is strapped tightly across her chest and another which is wrapped multiple times around her skinny right leg, this act’s as a holster for a small knife when it is needed. A tribal tattoo graces her right arm and slithers all the way down to her hand where is slides across the palm and through the finger joints and in addition to this mark are multiple scars which grace her body from past battles, some are noticeable where others are covered by fabric.

Personality: A very determined individual with all tendencies to prove herself in both her physical and mental skills. She loathes coming in second to anyone, and would much prefer dying in battle than she would admitting that she screwed up or failed to complete that which she had set out to do. Though she is not totally unapproachable, her fiery temper is something that could prove an obstacle when it comes to making friends, but with a little time, she can grow accustom to people, and even prove that she can have a good time if she is not stressed or held down. She shows immaculate care for her younger brother and sister, Joshua and Carla.

History: When she was younger she lived on a small continent near the sea where she would go swimming daily with her younger siblings and their family dog, Strifer. Though one day as they were going about their daily routine, a most unfortunate event happened, and she was pulled under by a monster, unknown to her. With great effort, she managed to pull her foot free from the mouth and was then pulled back to shore hastily by Strifer. She had undergone surgery at the nearest hospital, which in fact was miles away from their home, and most were afraid that the amount of blood she had lost would make it hard for her to recover, but to everyone’s surprise she pulled through, but ever since has had a fear of water.

Weapon: Her primary weapons are two triple barrelled guns by the names of Bloodfire and Shadowfaith. Both are black in primary colour, but Bloodfire has the picture of a serpent carved into its barrel, and Shadowfaith has the same type of carving, but takes on the shape of a wolf. The holsters are of the same colour, and have the same picture of its pairing weapon eroded into the leather fabric.

Her secondary weapon is a small, leather handled knife, which curves at the end to earn more of a slashing effect.

The belt stretching across her chest is for the rare occasion when she gets to use shotguns or machine guns on missions.

Magic Type: Void

Guardian Force: Javeris

Other (equipment, etc.): She carries only her small knife and a few healing herbs and potions with her as extra equipment.

Evan; Accepted, but I must ask that you edit your weapon. Its ability to be imbued with magic and become indestructible is a bit much. The second thing is my fault, as I forgot to update the availability of the GFs, but you will need to choose another GF.

Shadow; Accepted.

Sign ups are now closed. I will post my character in a bit when I get the form worked out. I'll start it today or tomorrow, after I write a post for a Cafe thread which will explain the mechanics of GFs and other features in depth.

Double posting to get your attention for the following announcement/update. I haven't finished writing the Cafe thread yet, which is a bit crucial as, like I said, it will clarify a lot of mechanics (a few of which I'm deciding between) and will need to be read before posting. I'll probably get that done today, so I'm fairly confident that we can see the RPG starting tomorrow.

Evan, thanks for editing.

Oh, here's my character.

Name: Talon “Scarecrow” Grimslade

Gender: Male

Age: 21

Description: Talon stands at six feet, three inches and has a toned, subtly muscular build. His mid length dark hair sits plainly on his head, and his pale green eyes show now hint of sparkle or luster. His nose is slightly large and his rounded chin is home to some short-trimmed facial hair that stretches along his jaw line and merges with his sideburns. He generally wears a pair of slightly loose, faded black pants which display an array of frayed threads and small holes, and a long sleeved charcoal gray shirt with a tighter navy blue short sleeved one on top of it. His most renown features reside on his flesh: his stomach, chest, back, and arms are home to dozens of individual tattoos of crows in various airborne positions. People who know of him probably know about the tattoos (some only remember him as ‘the guy with the birds’) and those whom he considers friends sometimes call him Scarecrow, a nickname he gave himself years before.

Personality: Talon, despite is rather unkempt, uncaring appearance, is actually an articulate, intellectual individual. He is one for deep conversations and enjoys literature and philosophy. He is reserved in sharing his ‘knowledge’ with others, as he never wants to be the person who gives the advice and corrects others in terms of what he believed to be right. He believes that everyone is entitled to their mistakes and no one has the right to claim what is right, wrong, moral, or immoral for someone else. Though he does have this belief, it doesn’t stop him from carrying out the will of the Garden. He tends to try and keep his personal feelings separate from his job. When dealing with others, Talon isn’t any more or less friendly than any average person would be, but he does tend to keep certain things to himself unless directly asked.

History: Talon was never one of those people who dreamt of becoming a SeeD, nor one of those who was thrown into it by circumstance. Honestly, he joined the Garden out of utter boredom. Hailing from a relatively small town, he found that he got everything he could out of it, and decided that going to the Garden and becoming a SeeD would open him to a multitude of new people and cultures and experiences that would liven up his rather gray existence. He came into the academy at eighteen and never regretted his decision, finding that he rather enjoyed life in the Garden, and ever looked forward to becoming a SeeD.

Weapon: Two handguns, one silver and one black, which have their names crudely carved into the sides. Omen on the black one and Harlot on the silver. In melee combat, he relies on a loose form of martial arts. Both guns use universally standardized ammo clips, so there’s good chance in finding them if he runs out.

Magic Type: Ice

Guardian Force: Xabuu

Other: Extra ammo clips, cigarettes, pocket knife, lighter. Also, Talon has an odd fascination with birds from a symbolic sense. He legally changed his first name to Talon (he never reveals what it was before), and has a special infatuation with crows and vultures.
