Are you a ghost hunter? Do you believe in Bigfoot? Do you think vampires are logically impossible? Have your revised the theory of human evolution to include fairies, werewolves, and/or gnomes? Are you afraid Slender Man is coming to get you?

If so, this might be the club for you.

Here members can discuss opinions, encounters, theories, and news related to the unexplained subjects of the world.

Our Society Mascot:

;479; Rotom ;479;

Early February 2012, Rotom was chosen as our society mascot. This ghostly orange pokemon with the power to posses electronics can be associated with Poltergeists and Gremlins.

Poltergeist, a word of German origin, means noisy ghost, and is usually used to refer to an unseen spirit which moves objects and makes knocking noises. Though some theories suggest that they aren’t ghosts at all, but the physical manifestations of unknowing psychic people’s frustrations.

Gremlin, a derivative of Goblin or gremian (to vex), refers to tiny and/or spirit creatures which damage electronics. Gremlins seem to have a particular interest in aircraft, and were first reported by British WW II pilots.

Some notable pop culture sources of Poltergeist and ghost Gremlin lore include;
Poltergeist (movies)
Ghost Master (video game)
Ghostbusters (movies, books, cartoons, & video games)
The Exorcist (movie)
Paranormal Activity (movies)
The Grudge (movie)
Danny Phantom (cartoon)

Rules:

1) All SPPF rules are to be followed

2) Only approved members may post, this is to prevent SPAM and a flood of ‘can I join’ posts. Do NOT post asking to join, please read the Membership Guidelines instead.

3) Please stay on topic, the occasional relevant joke is fine, but don’t SPAM us with a hundred jokes. This is a serious thread, so please save your RPGing for another thread.

4) Discussion of Religion or Politics in any manner that is meant to harm, harass, or discredit anyone is prohibited. Mentioning that such-and-such religion/government supports the theory/belief of -blank- is fine, so long as you don’t try to use it as ammo.
For example:
Allowed, “Many -blanks- believe in Angels.”
Not allowed, “Only idiots, like -blanks-, would believe in Angels.”

5) Rule breakers will be given 1 to 3 warnings (depending on the severity of their misbehavior) after which they will receive a temporary ban, or in more serious cases a permanent ban.

Membership Guidelines:
You may become a member of this club under the following circumstances:

1) You may PM me or an approved Staff member to ask if you can join. Please provide some reason as to why you want to join or think you’d be a good member. Please do not post until your membership has been approved. Staff who can approve your membership will have [PM me to join] after their names.

2) You need to have 25 or more Serebii forum posts, to prove you’ll actually stick around.

3) You must have an interest in the paranormal and/or plan on contributing to the club intellectually.

4) When PMing to join, you may select a favorite/representative mythical/crypto-logical creature to be listed after your name. Do not request a pokemon icon to be displayed by your name, it's a special reward for members who continue to contribute to the club.

5) As of February 2013, the member list is purged of all inactive members (people who have not posted in the past 2 months) at the end of each month. This does not prevent you from rejoining in the future, but it does make your creature available for anyone else to claim.

What follows is my original second post:

Okay, since this got bumped off the third page before anyone really had a chance to see it, I might as well introduce myself in the allowed bump post.

I am, of course, VampirateMace.
And, I’ll go ahead and answer the intro questions for the fun if it:
Occasionally, I do hunt ghosts and paranormal phenomenon. I don’t really believe Bigfoot exists based on the fact that there would be too few bigfeet for sustainable breeding, but I could be wrong. Virus based vampires may be plausible, but… I have not attempted any paranormal revision of the theory of human evolution, which isn’t to say I’ve never made a paranormal Tree of Life. Slender Man is probably not coming to get me…

As for the Icebreakers, how about the first question:
Have you ever witnessed any paranormal activity or had unexplained event?
Yes, here’s a little ghost story for you:
One morning, while it was still dark out, I was making a sandwich for that day’s lunch. (I was a little tired, but most definitely not asleep.) I was at the cabinet facing the dining room, and one of the chairs started rocking. I stared, and when it had stopped, I went to see if one of the cats had jumped off of it, and both cats were asleep in chairs to either side of it. So what had moved the chair?

I really like studying about imaginary creatures. Mythical animals and demons seem to fascinate me more than regular animals do.

I remember one night when I woke up, I saw this glowing doll on the window, and it was moving. I threw a toy at it to no avail and then I ran off. My parents swear I was dreaming, but let me tell you, it was real and it happened. I cannot say I know for sure but I remember it actually happening.

I’ve had experiences similar to that, once waking up to see a ghostly boy standing across the room and staring at me. I was so sure he was real. Unfortunately things that happen when you first wake-up are usually explained away as waking dreams, and it would be very difficult to prove that they aren’t.

It would be interesting to research and see if there’s any other glowing doll in one’s bedroom stories. That might provide some support.

Similar is the bound-in-iron experience, were someone feels awake, but can’t move, and they often believe there is a alien/demon/hag/ghost staring at them or holding them down. Scientists explain this as sleep related chemicals which keep you from hurting yourself while asleep still being active as well as dreams, but your brain is starting to wake up. However in some cultures it’s commonly accepted that ghosts (or other creatures) can affect your sleep and cause waking dreams and bound-in-iron experiences. So in that way science still hasn’t really explained it away.

You know something? Have I ever told you I enjoy drawing monsters all the time? My online fursona just happens to be a mythical creature, but I think I told you that in my PM. Even recently I'm working on a (The rest has been abridged.) ...Actually, I don't think I'm allowed to talk about it directly but I'll give you a hint. It's called MegaMiraj X and it involves replacing characters with monsters.

Say, what is YOUR favorite monster. I know you like vampires and undead creatures, but I feel the undead has a different category than other mythical beasts.

Ah, I didn’t know you drew, I draw lots, all sorts of subjects. Looks like all three of our members so far are artists, yea. And good call, there’s serebii’s no advertising rule to worry about.

Interesting question, with important specifications. Though I use vampire as my representative creature (I have fangs after all), I can't help but be fond of mermaids, who probably don’t fit your criteria of monster/beast either. I’m also not very good with favorites, I don’t even really have a favorite color, though I’ll often settle on blue if the asker just has to have a color. Currently I think my favorite beast must be the Vegetable Lamb, they’re just too damn cute an unique. I was really excited so see B/W had one, and it had to be one my team. Actually the B/W games had a lot of good mythical beasts and paranormal creatures thrown in, didn’t it?

Mermaids kind of fall into the "Demi-Human" catigory as they are part human and intelligent. ...Then again, that's only in some context I guess.

Me, I prefer monsters that are more obscure. I've been looking up creatures from Hell, and I've seen a long list of monsters. Many of these were used in the CastleVania series, but a lot of them were inaccurately portrayed. Decarabia, for example, was NOT a starfish. It's a demon that may take the form of a star in some points, however, but it controls birds. There are a few monsters that haven't been used in Castlevania yet like the bloodcrow, Caim, and the freak horse, Orobas. Now that I think of it, I think Dragon Quest has a monster based on Orobas. There are also creatures from heaven like the four headed Cherub and the winged bull, Shedu. But I don't know as many of those.

Another preference of mine are how far away from humans a creature is. For example, something like a sphinx, which traditionally has a human head (If you're counting Andro and Gynosphinxes. Gynospinxes are the one most people think of) are less interesting to me than things that have no human in them at all.

Video games, books, and movies tend to misrepresent monsters/creatures all the time. We can think of that as part of a creature’s ‘evolution’ or we can search for the oldest materials on that creature we can find… time for some mythical ‘Trees of Life’?

I tend to think of far from human as being more personality/instincts than appearance. The manticore, for example may wear a human face, but it’s about as far from human as you can get, just a giant hairy scorpion that kills everything it in it’s path… Generally, for humans, only psychopaths try to mow everyone down.

Most mermaids, in that respect, do tend to be represented as very human like in their actions. I mostly just like drawing them… their long tails and graceful poses. And in the case of sirens, their psychopathic grins.

I've always heard that mermaids were more evil and deceitful, trying to lure sailors to death. Maybe I'm mistaken though, and it's possible there are more than one kind.
As for the pop culture thing, I do think they tend to misrepresent them often, but I say at least give them a little leeway, since it's not like there are set in stone descriptions of most. Although I do think the shin megami tensei games are at least fairly accurate in descriptions and images.

Hmmm...

To be honest, I'm sure we all know what a mermaid is. Is anyone interested in a rare, obscure creature even I may not have heard of? Not that mermaids are bad, just that I'm always yearning to learn about new creatures.

Well, I was messing around earlier and found the wikipedia article for the Bloop. Not entirely sure if it can be considered completely paranormal, but I'd say it might. It's basically a really loud sound made in the bottom of the ocean, for no apparent reason.
As for creatures, there's no shortage of things, especially if you get into mythology and demons. Denver devil(or something similar), Wendigo, The Baba Yaga, that worm in the desert I can't remember the name of... recently I've liked thinking about the Wendigo, a cannibalistic spirit which possesses humans, making them crave human flesh. It's pretty gross, yeah, but it's also both paranormal and psychological at the same time, which I find interesting.

Yeah, we should all be pretty clear on what a mermaid is, though it’s actually a pretty broad category as Silkies (Walrus/Seal people), Sirens, Nereids, and others are often included in the group. Again, there’s the potential for a life tree…

Asbestospoison: Would the two you're unsure of be the Jersey Devil and the Sand Worm?

An unexplained Bloop hun? I’ll have to listen to that later when there isn’t a TV being watched in the same room.

As for trying to find a new creature for MugoUrth…

How about:

Oi No Bakemono (Japanese) - when your backpack is alive, grows a head, and breath fire, roasting off your ears if you don’t notice in time?

Mimi Onna (Japanese) - the woman with an Ear for a face an little ear minions that do her bidding?

Manananggal (Phiippines) - A beautiful vampire like woman who, after dark separates at the waist, grows wings and flies away from her legs (guarded by men she’s bewitched) to feed on pregnant women and their babies?

Huldra (Scandinavian) - Similar in behavior to wood nymphs, they’re pretty women from the front, but hollow like empty tree bark from behind.

Bunyip (Australian) - A dark shaggy creature with tusks, flippers, and a horse-like tail, that lives in rivers and other bodies of water, and who may cause floods if their young are threatened.

- I suppose a lot of creatures look like humans, animals, and objects because that’s what we’re used to, perhaps lacking creativity, it is part of what makes the scary ones scary, they could be any where, they could be anyone, or anything.

Edit: Mugo, you beat me... Baba Yaga is a Russian witch/hag who lives in the forest, in a hut that has chicken feet. There's a lot of diffrent stories about her, and versions of said stories. In some she eats children, and in others she helps the good ones and curses the bad ones.

Sorry, I meant Dover Demon, not Denver or Jersey. And the name of the worm is the Mongolian death worm. As you can see, my memory isn't always great.
And yeah, that's what the Baba Yaga is. And old woman who lives in a chicken hut and eats babies. But only sometimes.
EDIT: I've never heard of some of those. I also seem to remember some Japanese Demon that Mawile is based off of, one that has carnivorus hair or something.
EDIT2: It's apparently called the Futakuchi-onna. It seems to appear when japanese women don't get enough to eat, and grow a second mouth in the back of their head, which screams at her when not being fed. And they say evolution in Pokemon is unrealistic...

I think that's called "The Uncanny Valley", when something is so humanlike yet un-humanlike it's creepy.
EDIT: My backpack can turn on me at any minute? I knew I shouldn't have trusted it!

What creature (or pokemon) do you think should be our society mascot?
Hmm...
Beheeyem-Very alien-like, my #1 pick.
Gastly/Haunter/Gengar-Should be obvious, ghosts.
Misdreavius/Mismagmius-Ghosts
Houndoom-Menacing looking, has "Doom" in it's name.
Drowzee-based on the Baku.
Deoxys-It came from space!
Chandelure-It's a haunted chandelere.
Those are my suggestions. Anyone else?

I think it should be a Pokemon based off of something people haven't heard of very often like, oh say, Nidoran? He's an almiraj.

...I'm kidding!

...But seriously, I think it should be a Pokemon based off of something more obscure.

Asbestospoison

Well, Zapdos and Moltres are based off of the Thunderbird and Phoenix, respectively. But I still think Beheeyem and Haunter would work well as mascots, since they scream "Alien and Ghost"! You generally want mascots to be easily identifiable, it wouldn't make much sense to have userbars that say "Sppf Paranormal and cryptid society" with a picture of mawile or Jynx. Also, I never noticed that nidoran is an Almiraj 0-0.
Also, Banette could work.

MugoUrth

Bibarel's adorable.
Actually, I'm not sure if Nidoran is truly an almiraj, it's just that an almiraj is a rabbit with a horn on it's head, and Nidoran is... a rabbit with a horn on its head. He even keeps the horn and bunny ears as Nidorino. Nidoking... is more of something else, apparently.

...Which makes me wonder what the female version is based off of.
