Setting the correct contrast/brightness?

Shigeru-kun

Property of Jesus
So OK, I know this might vary from person to person (some people adjust their contrast/brightness to their liking, while others leave it as is), but what I want are the people who leave it as is. Why? Because quite frankly, I really don't like what looks black to me to look gray to someone else. I've had that happen in the past, and as someone who likes graphic designing and junk, that just doesn't work well for me.

So could someone please tell me, how can I properly adjust the contrast and brightness on my comptuer and what things would I have to enter to get it back to it's original state? I have looked it up on the net, but the help I found was way too confusing. Apparently people can't talk like human beings when speaking of computers (Gotta use them big words don't ya know. =x).
