When oak says that you can choose a pokeball, Save then press select+start+B+A the same time to reset. Get charmanders untill you get a shiney one!

If you actually do get a shiny starter it will more than likely have a bad IV spread or a bad nature. If you get a shinny it is mainly just for show not for actual battles.

And yes, it takes a lot of time but if you really want one you're going to have to put a lot of time into finding it.

You can also hatch a shiny Charmander from an egg with the usual odds. This is the only way to get one with egg moves such as Belly Drum: definitely very rare and valuable. :)

FYI, this belongs in the Shiny Discussion Thread. Please direct all future questions related to shinies there, okay?

Also it might take ages or even a minute.Depends on luck. Also if you have emerald then and want to breed for a shiny then do it there because it takes a load off your back.Good Luck.

Either soft-reset in front of the pokeball (after saving, of coarse) or start hatching eggs (if you've gotten far enough in the game). Caution: This may take ages or only a few minutes, as the chances of finding a shiny is a 1 in 8,162.

This hasn't been closed yet? Luckily, I can correct some misinformation before it does:

Egg: before your final step, save. Then just keep on restarting. As you know by now, it takes luck and nothing more except patience.
This is WRONG! An egg's stats are determined from when you get it, so you'd need to save before taking the egg, and this takes longer than just getting multiple eggs. Ratiosu, have you even checked the stat screen of the hatchling between resets? You'll notice that the nature, gender, and stats are always the same.

Shininess and gender/nature are determined by the same hidden value. (the PV) Therefore, shininess is also determined from when you get the egg.
