Ash MUST get butterfree back. When I saw that scene of the intro in japan when Ash's Pokemon were all lined up, I was so looking forward to seeing Butterfree again. He left, what? Episode 15? 
. It's like, 400-something now. Ya know, it's funny. Every time I see a flock of Butterfree, and I'm sure I'm not the only one thinking this, I wonder if one is Ash's, or at least related.
He also should get Pidgeot back, and Brock needs a Tyranitar. You know, to be in sync with the themes.

Misty would do wonders with a Milotic, she could double battle /w Milotic/Gyrados

Also, Misty should get her Togetic back and evolve into Togekiss.

but i do agree with you, i think that it would have made more sense to give her a chikorita instead of a bulbasaur
but, strike that, may's bulbasaur is at profesor oaks, and is lovey dovey for ash's bulbasaur... i dont think that may's chikorita would have fallen in love with ash's bayleef
