Why specifically would [a hypothetical living] Bin Laden want to release a video to prove he is alive? It seems more strategic to let the U.S. believe he's dead so nobody will look for him while he plans a new attack.

Pose as a team
because it would demoralise us aswell as discredit the goverment further. Can you imagine the biggest news recently in the war effort being a hoax?

Well, yes. I can imagine that. I have a vivid imagination.

I can understand that argument; but I think having everybody off your trail believing you're dead would be more advantageous for Bin Laden. He's not a politican opponent, he's a terrorist; discrediting the government is not quite as important to him as opportunity to defend and then kill.

The biggest argument against Bin Laden wanting everyone to believe he's dead, I think, is the fact that he could have done it any time in the last ten years, especially with the number of times he was pronounced dead, but he has always been very fond of releasing videos.

Not really

Not to mention Osama would have made a video showing that he is alive...

Not really... Osama could take advantage of the situation and have everyone fooled as "dead"... throwing off the public from attention towards him.

But I'm sure he is dead.

But hypothetically speaking, If he wasn't dead... He would not make a video. He would go along with the confusion.

THAT is a much more strategic plan than disproving to everyone he is dead..

at least to me that is.
