Slow computer. For no reason either.

Okay, so last summer I bought a beautiful Toshiba Satellite laptop, and it's worked amazing up until last month. She's become startlingly lethargic, now failing to open Opera, and struggling to run Pokemon Online. So, what's up with my computer?

Just some details:
I-7 processor
>520gb remaining of a possible 645gb
Runs Opera for Internet
Very few downloads
My Internet connection is superb. I can access it anywhere in my house or yard via said laptop or IPod Touch

I doubt I have a virus, but there are no guarantees anymore these days. As I asked above, could anyone tell me what's up with my computer?

We need a little more info to help you out. What operating system is it running (it should say when it's booting)? What Anti-Virus suite do you use? Have you defragmented it recently? How many programs do you have installed? etc, etc.

Firstly you should clean your computer of all dust especially the cooling fans. Dust causes overheating which can slow down your computer by upto 20%. If you are going to defrag, you should download a free trial of diskeeper from their website as they are the most advanced defragger. You should also find out how many programs you have running in the backround and delete as much junk as possible.

I have under 20 programs installed.
It was defraged about two months ago when this happened before.

It sounds almost definitely like a virus. I can't think of anything else it could be. Delete your cookies and caches.

Tap F8 before the 'Windows 7' loading screen appears when you first boot up, load into safe mode and see if it is still slow. If it is, then you have a problem with your hardware. If not, then you have a problem with software that is loaded in 'full' Windows. It could be anything, if you can't be bothered doing a day's worth of troubleshooting then just back up your documents and reinstall Windows. Since you don't have many programs loaded, it won't be hard to get them back.

My guess is, that you have a virus / malware / spyware or any combination of the three mentioned. The easiest way of solving this is by formatting your hard drive and re-installing windows or any other OS on your computer. After that directly install any antivirus which is decent (like avg or avast which are both free) and getting a browser with adblock and seriously adviced noscript (a browser that is easy in using these two addons is firefox)

1) You should drop Norton 360, it's a system hog. You could try this, it's what I use.
2) You should also download this, it's cleans files on your computer that aren't needed.
3) Also, check your computer for viruses and malware, they can slow down your computer.

I hope this helped.
