Quoted from IGN:
May 10, 2006 - Nintendo just pulled a fast one on us. At an after-hours press briefing a mere minute ago, the company pulled another ace out of its sleeve: Super Smash Bros. Brawl -- the next installment in Nintendo's popular Super Smash Bros. series.

Shigeru Miyamoto himself has confirmed the following playable characters:

# Pit (Kid Icarus)
# Solid Snake (Metal Gear Solid)
# Zero Suit Samus (the blue "no-suit" Samus from Metroid: Zero Mission)
# Metaknight (Kirby)
# Wario (Wario)

Under the direction of series creator Masahiro Sakurai, Super Smash Bros. Brawl will feature classic, GameCube-style combat -- not Wii-style motion-controlled combat. That means players who prefer to play the game with the traditional control setup can do so using the GameCube control-style they're already accustomed to.

The game also features a range of new nasty toys, such as the ability to unleash a puppy from Nintendogs that will run up to the screen, put its paws up and obscure the view of the action. Mario, Kirby, Pikachu and Link have been confirmed as returning characters. Sakurai confirmed that Wario actually has a fart attack and that Solid Snake can use his trusty cardboard box. In the video trailer, Snake gets out of the box and says "It's showtime!"

"We thought a lot about what to do with Snake and his moves in Super Smash Bros. Brawl," said Sakurai. "As you all know Snake walks around with a gun, but with Super Smash Bros. I didn't want to bring in a lot of real weapons. So that was a real challenge. But conversely, if we could use things like rocket launchers and other explosives, not only would that be fitting for Snake, but it would work for the other characters. But who knows. Maybe Snake will exclusively use explosives throughout the game."

Sakurai said the decision to include Solid Snake when Hideo Kojima himself practically "begged" to include the Metal Gear character in the last Smash Bros. game. When asked about the possibility of Sonic the Hedgehod appearing in the game as well, Shigeru Miyamoto said: "There are probably possibilities for other third parties as well, and it maybe that even know there are corporate discussions going on about including some of these other characters."

Even better, the game will be fully online playable in addition to featuring a robust multiplayer mode. "My plan is to include Wi-Fi connection compatibility and online functionality. One of the primary reasons Super Smash Bros. Brawl was created was that Nintendo, when taking Wii online, wanted to have Smash Bros. to do that," added Sakurai.

The bad news is that Super Smash Bros. Brawl will no longer be a Wii launch title, but will instead be released in 2007

Quoted from Joystiq:
Speaking at a special Nintendo developer event, Miyamoto has just unveiled Super Smash Bros. Brawl for Wii. Newcomers include: Pit (Kid Icarus), Zero Suit Samus, Wario, and ... Snake!
During E3 Last year, Miyamoto approached Masahiro Sakurai, the series creator and now independent developer, insisting that he make a new Smash Bros. To make it happen, Nintendo put together a team to assist Sakurai. The result is Super Smash Bros. Brawl, one of the first Wii titles to avoid motion-controlled attacks.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl be fully compatible with the GameCube controller. Sakurai's reasoning is simple. He doesn't want to alienate gamers that prefer the traditional gamepad.

The game will feature online multiplayer.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl will not be a launch title. Sakurai has confirmed a 2007 release.

Solid Snake is in SSB: Brawl??? That doesn't seem to fit at all...I wonder if Nintendo got permission from Konami to use him?:p Anybody know how he managed to get into the game or why Nintendo decided to put him in there?

If a character like freaking Solid Snake can get into this game, then there's no excuse for any lack of King K.Rool or Dedede. So they'd better been in there somewhere, gosh darn it!

MetaKnight and Pit however, are pretty solid choices for new characters.
Zero Suit Samus gets a big meh.

I edited the post with some images from the conference announcing the game. You can see Pit!

EDIT:

Check out an abundance of screens on Joystiq! It looks amazing! o.o

*eats the thousands of hats I promiced I'd eat if a third party character got into the game*

Really, if this is true, I'm posting five WTFs, three OMFGs and a WTHWNT. Really, Solid Snake seems like a prank to me. o_O

BTW, who's that chick behind Mario?

Yeah, Solid Snake in there is just...weird. And random, lol. I'd really like to get this game, well, I'll be sure once I see some more characters that are playable. So Wario is in this game as well. Cool. XD

Thank you, SPPf! :)
Whew...talk about a fast one! Wario and Meta-Knight...we saw those coming. pit also had a fair bit of speculation. Zero Suit Samus...interesting. I suppose it will be like Mario and Dr. Mario both being playable. Wario in WarioWare bike and getup? Heck yes. (Here's to seeing Jimmy or WarioMan...) But ugh...Snake's design alone does not fit in with Nintendo's mascots. I won't be suprised to actually see Sonic and Tails in this.

EDIT: A Nintendog? THE HELL?

Meta-Knight.*jaw drops* Hell yes(they better have a trophy of him maskless!)!^^ Pit looks great also; very cute. Wario looks great. Solid Snake came out of nowhere, but I don't know that much about the series he's in. Samus looks absolutely gorgeous--major love for her. Guess she'll have karate based moves, since she doesn't have her suit?

BTW, who's that chick behind Mario?
It's Samus.^_^

This. Game. Is. Gonna. Be. AWESOME.

I'll bet the Nintendog is an item or something. It looks like it to me, anyway. And does anyone know what that stage is?

Thank you, SPPf! :)
Apparently, this game will be able to use the Gamecube controller. For those like me who are skeptical of the Wii's controller's practicality, this is some VERY good news.

CyberCubed

Yeah, ok!
I just saw this on IGN!

Solid Snake is a HUGE shocker. Does this mean we're going to get some MGS games Konami?

Suitless Samus is literally just what I wanted. She'll have her own moveset too, since she doesn't have the suit. Samus in a skin tight blue suit = awesome.

Meta Knight and Pit are pretty decent additions.

My guess for future (non-Nintendo) characters:

Sonic (more or less a given at this point)
Megaman
Pacman
Rayman

Agreed. As much as I was intrigued as to how the control interface would work out, the sure to be best SSB game ever is still the best regardless of how the controls work. :)

According to the article, Solid Snake will be using explosives and...a cardboard box?0_o Also, Snake was meant to be in Super Smash Bros. Melee, but got left out. I'll quote what the article said...

Kojima had begged Sakurai to inlcude snake in the GameCube version of Smash Bros., but since it the middle of the development cycle, it was too late to add the character. When Brawl became a realirt, Sakurai contacted Kojima and the decision was made to include Snake. Solid Snake will use explosives ... and a cardboard box.

They better get David Hayter to voice Snake again.:p

Very good news indeed. That stage is similar to the Battlefield arena from the last game, but the background looks to be from a Zelda-like game. Snake's arena, maybe?

Looks like it--the puppy will run up to the screen and block the action going on.XD Maybe the breed will be random...

With Soild Snake in, I'm expecting to see Sonic and Megaman, among others now.

I just hope they give me Deoxys. Then I'll be happy. Wario, Meta Knight, and Pit, I knew they'd make it.
