Smeargle's Sketch

I was just trying to figure out ways to get my Smeargles to learn moves, and I thought maybe I would try fighting a Ditto that turned into the monster I wanted to learn from... but it said Sketch wouldn't effect the Ditto. Has this happened to anyone else?

EDIT: If it means anything, Smeargle went first in the round.

Yeah, I realized that just after I posted this. -_-;; Guess I'll have to breed a lower-level Smeargle, since there're only two places to find Dittos, right?

OK, so, in order for my plan to work, I either have to have a really low-level Smeargle, or one that knows Curse... If I sketch a move and then play through the Gym Leader Castle on Stadium 2, can I re-learn Sketch without gaining more levels?

I tried sketching Ditto's transform on 3rd gen. It failed, even though I move second. Is it the sae with the 2nd gen?

herd u liek mudkips?
Yeah, I tried on Emerald.

Ditto used Transform!
Ditto Transformed into Smeargle!
Smeargle used Sketch!
The attack failed!

Okay, I'm not so sure about how well I remember the last line, but it said it failed. You can't Sketch Tranform. Damnit.

There is an art to training Smeargle. He is my favourite Pokemon and I dedicated alot of time to mastering it.

(1)
Teaching your Smeargle the right moves. For this to be easier you will need 2 Pokemon games and 2 Gameboys. Let's say we have Gold and Silver. We want our Smeargle in our game (Gold) to learn Horn Drill. So we catch a Rydon that knows Horn Drill on our (Silver) game.

(2)
We now train it up so that it is at a high level than our Smeargle with a higher speed so in battle it will go first. We take out all the other Pokemon in the (Silver) party.

(3)
We take him to the move deleter and get rid of all his other moves. Since we only want him for this operation and not to train it dosn't matter. Then we save it with Rydon and his one move 'Horn Drill' in the party and reset the gameboy.

(3)
With our other gameboy with (Gold) and Smeargle we do Mystery Gift. The (Silver) party will be transferred to Viridian City to the battle house.

(4)
We play our (Gold) game and go to the battle house where we fight Rydon with Horn Drill. Rydon uses Horn Drill and misses Smeargle uses Sketch. 'Smeargle learns Horn Drill.'

(5)-Conclusion
And there we have it. Of course if Horn Drill gets you you die, so just reset and do it until it misses. Remember it only has 30% accuracy so it will most likely miss.
Anyway you can teach your Smeargle's the best moves in the game this way. I taught mine 'Spore- 100% sleep' only parasect learns it. Then 'Mind Reader- 100% next move will hit.' Then of course 'Horn Drill- 100% K.O.' And you also have a spare space for a move of your choice. I used it for 'Spider Web' so the foe can't escape after I use mind reader on it. But it's up to you. You could teach it 'Psychic' for Ghost Pokemon that 'Horn Drill' dosn't effect. Or just leave that for you next Smeargle.

So there it is. That is why I chose Smeargle to train amongst the others. Teach your Smeargle your 4 best combinational moves in the game.

Ehhh...I pretty sure sketch only works in game. And even if it doesn't the move has to hit Smeargle so if Horn drill misses, it could not Sketch it. It would have to have a focus band I think.
