1) What Are EVs?
if you want to know what evs are, look somewhere else, this is COMPETITIVE RMT you should really know what evs are by now
[mods feel free to edit a link in here to define evs]
2) What Do They Do?
Four evs = a raise of one stat point, so..
252 evs in one stat would mean a 63 stat raise in that specific stat
2.5) Why Are They Important?
Well, if you want to be a pokemon master you need your pokemon to be as strong as they can be, which is where evs come in, using evs you can completly max a stat out (using perfect IVs here as this is NB based) lets take a simple but effective pokemon like heracross,
if you use an adamant nature (+atk, -def) then it would have 320 attack with a perfect attack iv, using 252 evs on this stat would increase the 320 to a whopping 383, which will strike fear into any budding pokemon master.
but if you didn't use the evs, you would have a lowly 320 attack heracross which is laughed at by any budding pokemon master.
3) Basic Spreads
ah yes the classic spreads that everyone knows about, and uses, but finds out that no-one semi-decent uses them.
252 stat / 252 stat / 6 stat
the classic 252/252/6, gives 63 stat points to two stats and a one stat increase to another, highly used by people new to netbattle, on mostly every pokemon they use, which is actually a bad thing, there is no diversity, use it on attack and speed and you have no defence to last to actually use the raised attack. etc. etc.
however can be good on the right pokemon/set
252 / 129 / 129
worst spread ever, maxing one stat, while half-maxing two others
always leads to 'too much of one not enough of the others'
highly overused by new people again
never good
3.75) Stats You Should Look For
Stats you should look for while ev'ing
HP: 240 / 256 / 272 / 288 / 304 / 320 / 336 / 352 / 368 / 384 / 400 / 416 / 432 / 448 / 464 / 480 / 496 / 512 / 528 / 544 ~~~~~ 704 (blissey)
all are multiples of 16, meaning maximum leftovers recovery
301(lots of pokemon) /401 (celebi/suicune/swampert etc.) /501 (snorlax) / 701 (blissey)
these survive 3/4/5/7 seismic tosses respectivly, with no leftovers recovery, i.e 'knock off' while not practical for blissey or snorlax, incredibly useful for swampert and friends
Attack: honestly doesn't matter, whatever you feel like using
Defence: pokemon like Claydol (equal-ish defences): basically make the defences as high and equal as possible, using a + nature on one, evs on the other
pokemon like Hypno (high one def stat): usually come with + nature and a lot of evs, the main defence usually ends up close to the hp stat
blissey: max defence
Speed: Dragon Dance / Salac: 200 (adamant tyranitar) to get 300 after 1, 400 after 2
249 (adamant gyara) to get 373 after 1, to outspeed sceptile/zam/duggy
264 (adamant mence/jolly gyara) to get 396 after 1, to outspeed jolt/aero/crobat
308 (jolly mence can get this i think) to get 462 after 1, outspeeds ninjask
Agility / Swift Swim: 187 (iono some pokemon) to get 374, outspeeds sceptile/zam/duggy
198 (gross/omastar/exeggutor) to get 396, outspeeds jolt/aero/crobat
231 (kingdra can if you want) to get 462, outspeeds ninjask
Miscellanious Speed: 300, outspeeds standard CB mence (baton pass celebi uses this)
270, outspeeds adamant heracross (some ddmence/celebi)
297, outspeeds jolly hera (jolly hera shouldn't ever be used as it sucks though) (celebi does this)
331/332/333, speeds used for SOME gengar/starmie/raikou
351, outspeeds tauros/jumpluff/gengar who get 350 max
352-361, generally outspeeds timid starmie (raikou uses this)
99 (iirc), outspeeds dusclops/snorlax/steelix
395, outspeeds jolt/aero/crobat (electrode/jask/deoxys-f/e can do this)
461, outspeeds jask (only deoxys-e)
Special Attack: See Attack
Special Defence: See Defence
4) Defencive Spreads
the HARDEST evs spreads to make,
first you need the pokemons purpose, i.e physical wall/special wall/spinner
then you need to see how the team is capable of defending this, i.e having snorlax and blissey would mean snorlax wouldn't have to have so much sdef.
examples:
Swampert, physical style: 240 hp / 16 atk / 130 def / 86 ish satk / rest in sdef ; Brave
using the physcial defence swampert, gives you a nice huge rock resist while it is aided even more with curse, however pokemon like starmie can deal huge damage with surf now, so..
Special Defencive: just switch def with sdef and vice versa
no starmie isn't such a threat, however if you can't curse up, physical attackers/choice banders become a problem, tauros really hurts now, getting a definite 2hko on you, etc.
as i use swampert with snorlax, it is generallt better for me to use the physical defencive version as snorlax can take special hits well.
Claydol: always using a level defencive spread is the best way to use claydol.
for example
seeing as it's defences are the nearly the same, defence is 267, sdef is 297 with netbattle's default 85 evs in each system
using a spread of; 236 HP / 12 Atk / 132 Def / 8 SAtk / 120 SDef (relaxed nature), would give you,
320 hp, then 306 in each defence, this helps out a lot as claydol is meant a counter to things that attack specially as well as physcially (Jolteon(sp)/Salamence(ph))
they get a lot more in depth, but defencive spreads really do depend on the team and how the pokemon is meant to fit into the team. However,
Blissey: 252 Def / 214 HP / 44 Sdef, this is THE ONLY blissey spread to use, raising it's weak point (def) so that it's insanly high HP covers it
5) Offencive Spreads
Choice banders: usually 252 / 252 / 6 spreads are suitable for choice banders, however there are some pokemon that work better without them.
Heracross: works better with some defence evs so that it can switch into earthquakes and tyranitar's rock slide/focus punch without being 2hko'd
Stat Uppers: Swords Dance Heracross / Dragon Dance Salamence/Gyara
attack-uppers usually have evs left out of attack and shoved into HP and one defence as they don't actually need the attack once setup
speed uppers usually have just enough speed to outspeed things after their stat-up (read above) like a 249 speed gyarados, no more no less in most cases, this leaves evs free to go into hp and the defences.
using minimal hp/def evs in attacking pokemon provides you with a little more staying power, and making a 1hko/2hko into a 2hko/3hko meaning you can get another hit it etc.
6) Mixed Attack Spreads
if the stats are close together, like blaziken, they are usually just made somewhat-equal to each other
if it is like a salamence, with just fire blast/flamethrower for skarmory purposes, more often then not, you ould not use any evs in satk, mixed attack spreads only really become difficult when you need to make something 2hko something else
i.e
snorlax needs ~185 satk to 2hko standard skarmory with fire blast, however that takes some evs, meaning i have to either sacrifice hp/sdef or atk, or a mixture of the three, you need to decide what wouldn't hurt your team to take out, i.e would taking evs out of sdef give your team a special attack weakness?
8) HP > Def/Sdef
Raising HP rather then defences is more effective in defending over both defences
as in
using a large amount of evs to raise defence and special defence but not raising HP, this would actually give less overall attack resistance then just using a shedload of hp evs and limited defence evs.
now go be a pokemon master ._.
._.
mods, feel free to clean this up as it looks a bit shitty as i did it in like 5-10 minutes of the top of my head
