I actually look at the original art for reference, and kinda of a shading guide, I guess ...but I start with a warped shape and then just build on detail as I go.

HOLY GOD UNOWN IS CREEPY

I could see those warped Unown being a code of sorts in a game. They're more successful than the normal ones.
