So, I've been playing Pokemon since Red/Blue first came out (played it on the Super Game Boy adapter for SNES!) and Japanese/English Pokemon TCG came out. Played Silver as well seriously, and then basically only played each release after very casually, just to beat the ingame story. (Never played Emerald or other non-main color games like firered) I just picked up Black version 2 and for some reason want to go competitive with this! With Wifi and other things, it makes this much more fun and viable! I am lost though... have no idea what pokemon are good... who to talk to... and really want some guidance on where to start. I've read some stuff on Smogon, but I still feel like I don't know where to start as newbie!

A Clan is a club (or clan) that battles competetively against other clans. Or they just battle. You could join the one me and OceanicLanturn are part of, they're nice.

As to your question... The best way to learn which one is the best is by training different types. You will learn which one is the strongest by simple trial and error. Thats how I build my teams. You also will need to see which Pokemon are the most compatible with each other as a team.

If you don't get the tiers of Smogon follow this (From the tier with the strongest Pokémon to the tier with the weakest Pokémon): Uber, Overused (OU), Borderline (BL), Underused (UU), Boderline 2 (BL2), Rarelyused (RU), Neverused (NU), Not Fully Evolved (NFE), Little Cup (LC). In rare occasions, Pokémon from NFE might be stronger than Pokémon from higher tiers.
