Solarbeam takes two turns to unleash and as the first turn is spent charging; your opponent can switch out to a Pokémon resistant against the attack. 2 Giga Drains are the same power as 1 Solarbeam, and both take two turns. 2 Leaf Blades are stronger than 1 Solarbeam, and they both take two turns.

Generally the only time you should use Solarbeam is when you can combo it with Sunny Day so it doesn't have to charge.

Well by using Sunny Day fire attacks get sronger, so you should be careful on who you teach the moves to. I would use it on fire pokemon, since by using Sunny Day they get the stat bonus and no charging for Solarbeam, like Houndoom.

Houndoom would die before it launches a solarbeam

I'd recommend it on Exeggutor. base 125 sp.atk + clorophyll is dangerous.

I prefer Leaf Blade or Petal Dance. Sunny Day+Solarbeam is only good to battle a trainer who has no fire type Pokemon.
Oh yes, I think Solarbeam's damage is halfed during a Sandstorm or Rain Dance.

Forget Solarbeam for your Grass Pokemon, I teach mine that and I hardly ever use it. Use something like Toxic and Giga Drain, even if Rain Dance is used at least the opponent is gonna faint because of poison!

(sorry, i just like Toxic!)

Solarbeam takes 2 turns to use. Sunnybeaming still takes 2 turns to use on the first go, only lasts a few turns, and leaves you open to Fire types.

This is why Scpetile and Cacturne are my favorite grass types: They have the only two good STAB moves for grass.

I use Solar Beam-Sunny Day in my Houndoom; it's a bit difficult to survive using this "combo" when fighting a physical pkmn; but when used against Water-Type pkmns it works pretty well.

My Treecko does a Substitute + Solarbeam combo, it's pretty cool.
