Some ways to make Gyms more difficult...

...A few basic things that Nintendo will NEVER impliment in the games, but its nice to dream...

1. Only being able to use the same amount of Pokemon that the Gym Leader has.

2. The first Pokemon that the Gym Leader sends out is random.

These two things should add a slight challenge to Gym battles, and make it more realistic.

What? Exactly
1) make the Gym Leaders have strategy
2) at the Rustboro Gym you should have to pass a test like in the manga
3) make it so that each time you lose to a Gym Leader, their pokemon grow levels
thats all i got for now.

Make GYMs not Type-based. 'Nuff said. Seriously. :)

Yeah I agrre with you Orion. Have gyms based on stuff like defense, speed, baton passing, tanks and that kind of stuff.

Having it so that each gym has a "minimum level" for each trainer and the leader and also that each trainer's pokémon's level matches (or, in most cases, it higher) than your own highest-level pokémon in the case that it's not of a lower level than the minimum level would generally make each gym quite a bit more difficult. This would undoubtedly prevent those people who prefer sweeping through the game with one pokémon from getting terribly far and would almost always keep the odds in your opponent's favor.

I think all gym leaders should have a theme though -- I always saw it as they were the best in their own field. I think the Elite 4 should have a variety though.
I'd love more challenges and puzzles to get to the gym leader though. Stuff like the Trick House but harder and in gyms. One day I think a climb to the top of a mountain, defeat the gym leader than have to slide back down will be a necessity.

Why not? That's what I like about the Gyms/Gym Leaders that they specialize their favorite type.

I agree that they should make a rule that you can only use the number of Pokemon the leader uses. That would make sense AND would make it a little bit more difficult to win.

Or, you could just never train your Pokemon for the Gyms, like I do. Chances are you'll have a ***** of a time.

ROFL. I always do that, so I end up spending around 12000 on X Attacks, Defends, Speeds. :D Now you'll understand why Liza and Tate were almost impossible for me to beat. (That and the fact I don't evolve my Pokémon past Basic Stage, most of the time.)

Randomise the Gym Leaaders and their pokemon. One play through, you step into the first ym and it's Brock, with an Onix and Geodude. Someone else switches and they stumble across Erika with a Sunkern and Tangela in the first gym. Brock doesn't turn up until Fuschia and then he's got two Rhydon, an Onix and a Graveler.

I think the same would be good like the gym leader has six Pokemon that they will use but only use say three of them and you have to do the same.

That is a good idea RaZoR LeAf
I would like to be a gym leader for once at the start and then you are like the top gym so you start with high level pokemon (and decide which typing) Then you moe onto the Orange Islands to try and beat the OI League

I dunno...I found Flannery crap hard the first time...partially because I underestimated Overheat and partially because my team consisted of Abra, Machop, Nuzleaf, Lombre(with no good water moves), Combusken and...err...Linoone. I hadn't caught many pokemon at this point. >.>

Alternatively if you want a real challenge use Pokemon that are weak to that gym type. Or don't evolve your own Pokemon.

Well, all the trainers are really ugly and only wear underwear. Anyone would have trouble getting through one of THOSE gyms :D
