SOMETHING

Fia Seliro was not a woman easy to surprise. She had seen the fate of her husband, Kai, several years ago, when he had chosen to travel far away, and told her not to wait for him. She knew all the things her son, Jamie, had done until that fateful day, three years ago, when he left in a journey with the neighbor’s daughter, Marina. And she was not fully surprised that her son had called her, after a long time without a call.
As she heard his faint voice, partially quiet, she felt a strange pang at her heart, mixed with sadness. It was as if his voice had announced that bad news were coming, even if it was almost normal.
“I have something to tell you.”…what could that be about, she wondered? And why now, of all times?
“Yes, Jamie?” she asked, awaiting his response. She heard a sigh, then a pause, before another sigh.
“Mom… I don’t know how you will handle this, but…” he had started, before a beep rang on his side. Fia felt nervous, as that was unusual. Just as she was about to reply, however, he continued.
“…I’m not a trainer. I’ve been living for the last two years in Goldenrod, I have no plans of heading to the Indigo Plateau any soon, and…” he stopped, apparently grasping for words, which were found before she found her own voice.
“…and I plan on marrying Luna Estella… which you may remember as that Ralts that was left on my care, now a Gardevoir.” Now that was enough of a shock. Fia felt her legs grow weaker, as questions raced through her mind. Her mouth was dry and her nerves were pained.
He went on, not expecting a response from her.
“You may be wondering why I chose her, instead of a human girl like Marina. The fact is, I love Estella. I don’t care that she is not human. I don’t care that she may just like me as a trainer. All that matters is that I love her, and she loves me. I’m sorry for hiding this for so long, and for not being what you wanted.” The apology was sincere, and Fia just didn’t have the heart to argue right now. Maybe once she went to Goldenrod, but for now, she just listened.
“Marina has been traveling across the world by herself, I guess. We lost contact when I stopped being a trainer to settle down. I think she sent me a message or something recently, but I haven’t been able to find it. As for my Pokémon… they are fine. You don’t have to worry about me, I swear. Just… please don’t do anything rash…” he trailed off, his voice getting weaker and weaker. Fia felt tears come to her eyes, either from sadness or from anger at her son.
“Our marriage is supposed to be arranged in a few months… something private, just me, you, Estella, what we can find of her family, and whoever can fill in. I’m very sorry for anything that might have brought you sadness. It could not be helped.” Jamie had stopped talking, but he seemed to be debating with himself, from what she could listen.
“I hope you live a happy life from now on. Goodbye, mom.” And with that, the phone died. The receiver on her hand slipped down and fell to the ground, as she sat on a couch, deep in reflection.

Marina groaned as she woke up, in her room at the Lavaridge Resort. She still wasn’t used to Hoenn, even though she had moved several months ago. While she had mostly worked on minor field researches for Prof. Oak before, she had struck gold when she presented a few studies, one on Pokémon language being a factor on breeding, and another on the neural autopsies of Psychic and Fighting-types. The latter was possibly a stepping stone on the path leading to the understanding of cerebral functions, as it could explain the strange similarities between many members of those types, reportedly known as being mostly human-shaped.
However, for all the good it did, she was not having any ease sleeping. Even top-level League psychologists had found it nearly impossible to crack the hard shell that was her mind. Marina, however, had a pretty good suspicion of what had caused her to have such a horrible health.
‘Dammit, Jamie! Why did you have to be like that? Why couldn’t you just think of a higher picture?’ she cursed mentally, as she remembered the circumstances of their splitting. Although it was painful, the results had improved after the eighth shrink had asked her to think back to those bad memories.

Marina glared at him, curious. What the hell was going through Jamie’s mind? She thought that he would have went on and down Mt. Mortar. However, he had stopped in his tracks, just as he had left the city.
As she approached him, Jamie sighed quietly. “You’re probably wondering why I’m here, right?” he asked, in that depressing tone of his. He only used that tone when he was feeling sad and started to complain about how people just didn’t care about him. Of course, he was wrong, but he HAD to be one of those people who don’t care any about training Pokémon, and that would rather live normal lives.
The boy was just a lucky idiot who managed to defeat eight Gym Leaders and survive even the Dragon Den, but who lacked any sort of talent for training other than really impossible strategies. While they worked, they tended to cost too much for him to be able to rely on them well. So, while she sorta understood his point of view, she felt he complained too much.
Still, she nodded. Jamie lowered one of his arms. “It’s because I’m tired of this farce. I’m not a trainer. You know this, and yet you, like everyone else, lets me be because of the fact that I happen to win once in a while.”
Marina groaned. So what if he had been defeated by Team Rocket several times? It happened to anyone! True, her victories had helped the public know her more, but he was too depressing to want to change!
However, she was unable to retort, as he continued. “So I’m quitting.”
She stared at him, surprised. He was quitting? Like that? But didn’t he have all eight badges? Hadn’t he told everyone that he’d meet them at the Indigo Plateau? Hadn’t he managed to do things other trainers hadn’t managed to do before? In half the time, even?
Finally, she couldn’t stop talking. She started asking him several questions nonstop. She didn’t wait for a response; she just went on and on. Jamie listened to her, but he did not reply. Instead, he seemed to be waiting for something.
Finally, once she seemed to be done with the questions, he lowered his other arm. Then he got up, quietly, and turned towards her. There didn’t seem to be anything wrong with him, other than a horrible sadness.
“I once wished the answers to these questions were helpful…” he told her, lowering his gaze. “But they only brought pain. I don’t want to be a pawn, yet I have to be one if everyone is to be happy. Depressing, no?”
Marina took a step back. It had become obvious that he had snapped. And while she wanted to stay with him and help, he had convinced her, a while earlier, that he did not want to be helped by anyone.
Anyone, but…
The look on her face must have told him everything, as he closed his eyes and nodded. She would have made a whole argument about it, but he was clearly not well. Had it been the Dragon’s Den, she wondered? After all, he had passed through the worst of his crisis just after leaving it.
His answer to her question was positive. “The Dragon Test… you have just no way of understanding it without going through it… and yet I refuse to let you go through. It is not worth it.”
That did not really answer her, however, but she was too angry to pursue the point. Rather, if he wanted to live as he wanted, she would let him, then! She could become a successful professor without his help!
As he turned back, entering the city, she went forward, tears falling from her eyes as she progressed.

“Jamie… why the hell did I have to fall in love with you?” she asked nobody, furious. “Why did I pursue you, even after you showed several clues?” Her voice was growing louder after every question.
“Why the hell am I still in love with you…” she cried, before breaking into tears.
