Something screwy with the pokedex? That Mew.....

Procrastinate Today!
I have always wondered something about the Pokedex. If you look through it, Mewtwo is #150 and Mew is 151. But, doesn't that seem backwards? For one, Mewtwo is a clone of Mew. Mewtwo was created after Mew. Mew was supposedly the ''Adam' or 'Eve' of the Pokemon world. So that bein' the case, shouldn't Mew be #150?

The reason for this is probablly just so you fill your Pokedex evenly (In RBY), but they could have just as easily made Mewtwo an event Pokemon.....so, yeah. Discuss?

Mew is a secret Pokemon. No it doesn't make sense to make Mewtwo 151. Mew should be the event Pokemon.

By your logic, then shouldn't Mew be No.1 or No.0?

It never made any sense to me either...

In see what your saying but look at it this way, in the movie they meet Mewtwo first, thus the pokedex records him first, The mew shows up later and the pokedex records him second, and then the truth of the whole cloning is reviled. so for these two there dex position is based on when they became openly known about

I always saw the Pokedex as the order in which pokemon were discovered. This is partly the reason why I get so angry at new pre-evos.

I think that Mew should logically come first, but I also think it makes more sense for Mew to be the event Pokemon.

Mew is the 21st Pokemon programmed into R/B/Y/G, and Mewtwo is the 131st.
Where'd you find that out? Is there a link somewhere? Just out of curiousity.

Mew was slapped on the end because it was a secret pokemon. If there was a blank space in between Dragonite and Mewtwo, people would know that space was for Mew, since it's existance is stated during the game.
Gamefreak/Ninty didn't want to even hint of Mew's obtainability to public until the giveways.

Exactly. If mew was 150 there would be a huge gap between Dragonite and Mewtwo

Mew SHOULD be the 1st pokemon in the dex, because I'm pretty sure the 'dex isn't done by when the pokemon were discovered.

Seeing as this is a game, they made it in the vague order you'd meet them.

And in my opinion, seeing as mewtwo was stronger (how can mewtwo be stronger than the original?[/I]) it should have beem the event pokemon, and at the end of the game you get to meet the special pokemon.

Are you able to get Mewtwo in the game? Just out of curiosity... ;152;
In R/B/Y/FR/LG you can. (and R/S/E, to a lesser extent)

I don't think Mewtwo should be the event pokemon. I mean, it was among the most powerful/rare pokemon at the time, so this called for a steriotypical awesome design. It came as a nice surprise that the rarest one of all was actually a non descript little pink fetus-looking thing.

If the dex was going to go in order of creation, then that means Mew and Aruseus will be at the top.

It's hard to explain, but Mew is number 151 for a reason... my guess is that people actually didn't believe Mew existed? After all Mewtwo was created by a single hair from Mew, it could have been ages old after that Mew died.

maybe...the legendaries always end up at the last part of the dex...since mew is more legendary than mewtwo...the dex number of mew is 151 because he/she is the most legendary in the 1st gen. dex...hehehe

It's just a number the Pokedex gives them to stay organized. Nothing more. Bulbasaur is Pokemon #001.
Does that mean it was the first one to ever exist on Earth (or whatever planet Pokemon live on)? No.

There's no need for people to wet themselves over it.

I believe since people didn't think Mew existed it wasn't in the pokedex until it was discovered

As for why it was setup that way in the game, everyone's answered that--Mew was supposed to be unknown.

But from a more "realistic" standpoint, the Pokedex doesn't really list the Pokemon in the order they were discovered. Otherwise it'd be way mixed up. oO So the Pokemon are just put into a standard list--starters at the front, mini-legends at the very end after the ubers, which are after the pseudo-legend, after the trio, ect...
