Somny patents new hardware to prevent used games to be played

Xtra

You will be missed:(
Sony recently got a patent for some hardware that they're planning to implament in their new PS3. This hardware checks the disk to confirm it's legit, and makes the disk unplayable in any other PS3 system except for your own.

So that basically means you can't borrow, rent, or buy used PS3 games if they place this in their system. And if something happens to your PS3, the new one wont be able to play any of your gamnes.

Sony claims this hardware is only intended to limit piracy of PS3 games

I won't believe it until I see a legit article

You are just a fanboy who's trying to make the PS3 look bad.

If that's true...then, just wow. I may not be an expert on corporate affairs but, it seems to me as though they would be throwing away potential money from the rental market. It seems logical that they would make more from rental companies than they lose in piracy. I don't know, I'll need an official release of some sort before I'll believe Sony would just p*ss potential money away.

Actually, this will make them more money as people will buy a new game at full price instead of a used game for a lower price from a yardsale or flea market that keeps the profits.

Or, if you and your friend wanted to exchange games, you could exchange PS3's! XD

I see your point. I just wonder how the bulk buying of a company like Blockbuster, or a similar company, factors into the equation.

Although, I didn't think of something like eBay...Good find, Xtra.

First they show that their graphics can't compete with the graphics they promised last year.
Then comes the $600 price tag
Then comes the $60-$100 games
Now this.
Sony isn't exactly making a promise on improving their hardware quality either.

Proof that Sony is retarded, 'nuff said. I believe Nintendo has already won this "console race" even though Nintendo says they aren't in a race at all.

PlayStation is gonna go down hill - they wasted their money once again. They are already losing money on the PSP.

And do you know how it works. These companies purchase the games from Sony. Sony doesn't care if the product sales because they already got their money...so why do they care?

If this is true....... screw it Playstaion 3! As much as I'm gonna hate missing out on Metal Gear Solid 4....... bah I'll get a Xbox 360 for Sonic The Hedgehog and I might as well get the some other games on it as well.

This has been known about for months now.

I dunno lol
No offense, but did any of you actually read the article? -_-;

All that it said was that they patented it, and that they might use it for future use. They used the PS3 thing as an "example". Notice however, that they also mentioned on how things companies patent are never put to use, and are sometimes even patented for the advantage of others having to pay royalty fees. I seriously doubt that even Sony would make that stupid of a move when they're already selling their high-priced consoles at a loss. Sony knows what position they're in, but they just don't want others to. Belive me; I'm no fan of the PS3, but you people are just making unjustified asumptions.

If this is true however, goodbye Sony. It looks like you won't realize that dream of that rubbishly orb-shaped PS9..>__<;;

I seriously doubt they'd be this stupid, though.

Oh, great. If all games begin this, it'll run Video Game Rental stores out of business. They need to use their heads to think about the outcome of what they do.

No they won't. They can still rent out other games. :/

Geeze, Sony must be scared or something... no other company has been intimidated enough to make sure that everyone who wants a certain game HAS to buy it.

Oh well, all this means is profit for the mod-chip making community.

<EDIT> And the fact that they didn't region-lock it means that anyone from any region can import their games, but not borrow imported games... this is complicated.

So PS3 games are the only games that exist?

Sony can get sued. Reason:

Person buys PS3.

Overime buys lets say, 10 games.

PS3 breaks down.

They have to by new PS3, 600 dollars, because it broke down, no biggie.

They then have to spend 700 dollars on all the games they lost because of this.

Thus they are seud since they are being force to buy something they already bought if they didn't need to because it was not hard/software failure.
_____________

Therefore they are forcing you to rebuy games. Also, why would it stop piracy? Last time I checked piracy does not require to play a game before you sell it. Moreover, video rental stores will go out of businuss. Something tells me it is just a scam in hopes the above situation happens.

This then requires you to bring your PS3 everywhere. A $600 dollar item (with $70X dollars of games X=games your bring with you) to be lugged around. What if a car accident happens? You are mugged? You lose pretty much a thousand dollars?

Video game rental stores wouldn't go out of business unless PS3 games become the only games that exist. Even if they were, why should Sony care about them? Also, they wouldn't be able to be sued for that because they'd probably have something on the games that says something like "By buying this product, blah blah blah" about that being an agreement you're making by buying the game, unless, of course, that is not illegal in the first place.
