N00b in the dungeon!
Out of the limited range of Sonic games I've played, the 2D ones like Sonic Advance and the games featured in the Sonic Mega-Collection are by far the most entertaining.
Adventures and Heroes both suffer from an abhorrent camera, hard-to-navigate stages, and funless boss-battles. The franchise was originally fun because it was slick and simple, and making it 3D merely complicates a game that succeeded through being basic.
