Sony's Marketing Strategy

Strike!

Well-Known Member
Please read this article from the "Stars And Stripes" newspaper.

Now lets review what was said.

The big news was that Sony will match Nintendo’s efforts to create a controller that gamers can wave, swing and maneuver in waves that will affect on-screen action.

Sony says, “More natural and more intuitive play will become possible as if the controller has become part of your body."

Who does this sound like? Yeah that's right, Nintendo. So Sony's strategy is to market the PS3 as both a graphics powerhouse (to counter the Xbox 360)and an innovative product (to counter the Wii). We know that the PS3 controller only has basic tilt function. You can't use it in the same ways as the Wii controller. But does it matter?

To the casual or non gamer the PS3 controller has the same abilities as the Wii controller. This is what Sony is banking on. Someone will go, "Hey look at the Nintendo Wii that controller looks like fun!". Then someone else will say, "Yeah, but the PS3 controller can do the same thing, has awesome graphics, and is a Blueray player".

So what is your opinion? Do you think Sony will dominate another generation, or will Nintendo manage to win with true innovation?

Discuss.

Wow, it sounds like Playstation 3 will actually be doing something rather than what I thought. But what are the chances being a "powerhouse" as you said will course over heating issues again? Personally I think this new toy will break and the tilt will probably be REALLY sensitive.

But that's just me. I reckon, if it weren't for the controller of the Wii (A remote? What the fudge?) Wii would be in the lead.

Wii will win this one in so many ways!
Think about it,playing a sword game with real function, but hows that real feeling when your striking something like a one hand sword with a 2 hand controller?
And besides, nintendo fanatics know who copied who.Sony is going to get bagged. And besides the 2 controller will look no where near as good as the glossy white wii remote.

Sony might have the hardware, but nintendo has the software!

Sony,what else will they copy?

Honestly, I think I prefer a normal 2 hand controller. Slashing my controller around like a moron isn't really my thing. Call me old fashioned.

It doesn't matter what Nintendo fanatics think, they will buy a Wii anyway. I for one am not a fanboy like you. I am open to all systems and I will get a PS3. I don't care what they copied, it's business. I simply like what they have to offer. And before you call me a Playstation fanboy, I'm probably getting the Wii as well.

I guess that's a matter of opinion. Luckily, I don't judge a gaming system's capability by the glossiness of its controller...

...A Playstation fanboy could probably say the exact same thing. The reason I'm getting a PS3 is because of the software, same goes for Wii. The Playstation consoles have always provided me with lots of great games.

Stop being a damn fanboy. All 3 consoles are good systems. You might prefer only one of them, but they're all good.

Hmm...

And anyway, hasn't it been said by almost everyone at E3 that whatching someone play a Wii game is just (if not more) fun that playing the games?

Well, Sony's stratergy would probably work if their console wasn't so damn expensive. I agree with you in what people will say but I think you missed the end of the convosation.

Someone will go, "Hey look at the Nintendo Wii that controller looks like fun!". Then someone else will say, "Yeah, but the PS3 controller can do the same thing, has awesome graphics, and is a Blueray player". And then the first person will say, "Yeah but the Wii is under half the price, has pretty damn good graphics and I've already got a DVD player." Back to the second person, "Ok then, and with the money we've saved we can get a 360!!!"

That's just what I think though.

I agree with the price part, but I thought that the Wii has a DVD player as well

The Wii doesn't have it built in, but as a dongle.

Anyway, of course Sony are copying Nintendo to try and steal their customers. This is SONY we're talking about. You know, the same Sony that ALWAYS STEALS FROM OTHER PEOPLE. Seriously, they're like the games market's equivalent of bank robbers, except with more friends.

Nintendo is going to offer an add on DVD player.

But just like Reggie said, the two controllers are nothing alike. Just because they're both motion sensitve means nothing. The Gamecube and Xbox controllers have the same amount of buttons (give or take a few), and a simular design, but they don't play exactly the same. Though, I have to insert my random fanboyishness and say it does seem like Sony is being a bit of a copy-cat. I mean, they did have that boomerang-bannana thing last year, then they dumped it for this new one.

Speaking of which, I though Sony wasn't allowed to use that design anymore because of some lawsuit with Logitech. What happened there?

I completely agree. I was going to put some stuff about the price in there, but I didn't have enough time.

Whatever they're doing, they should stop. Coming up with their own idea would've been a far better marketing strategy instead of copying Nintendo every time.

Braaiiiiiinss......
Wii controller is good for: Swinging and shooting
PS3 controller is good for: Piloting and tilting
------------
That's all I can think so far.

Even though the controllers have motion sensors (or something) built in, but they play quite differently.

What they did was worse though. They acted as if they had come up with the idea on their own.

Sony keeps false advertising on like this, they're going to get a class action lawsuit.

Lol, we can hope. Anyways, I find all three consoles cool, but Wii is gonna have the best launch games so I'm sticking with it. So far I've seen nothing worthwhile for PS3 or Xbox 360. Not even Final Fantasy XIII looks that good.
