In the 3rd gen... there are special attack/defensive moves and regular attack/defensive moves. Certain types are special and the rest are regular. Normal types are regular for example and it uses the attack stat to calculate how much damage it does and the defense stat of the foe to see how much it resists. same thing with special and special stats.

Well, Attack is the power of a physical attack. Sp. Att is the power of a Sp. Att. (EXAMPLE OF A SP. ATT:Ice Beam, Hyper Beam, etc.)And pretty much the same with Defence and Sp. Def.

False. Hyper beam in the Third generation runs off Attack, not SP. ATK.

in R/S/E/FR/LG, special/physical is determined by the move's type:

physical:
Normal
Fighting
Flying
Bug
Poison
Ghost
Steel
Rock
Ground

(examples: Hyper Beam, Focus Punch, Earthquake)

special:
Water
Fire
Grass
Dragon
Dark
Psychic
Ice
Electric

(Examples: Ice Beam, Fire Punch, Psychic)


in D/P, this is no longer true. physical/special is based on the move itself.

examples: Hyper beam becomes special, and fire punch becomes physical
