Square Enix shuns Xbox 360

May 8, 2006 - SquareEnix, purveyors of such franchises as Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy, held their annual E3 2006 press conference and dropped some bombshell announcements. First, the Dragon Quest series will be making appearances on Wii. Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and Tower of Mirrors will take advantage of Wii's unique controller design and, more surprisingly, will be available at the Wii's launch. Next, Square announced a massive Final Fantasy XIII project, called Fabula Nova Crystallis. Under this project title sits three games: Final Fantasy XIII for PS3, Final Fantasy Versus XIII for PS3, and Final Fantasy Agito for, brace yourselves, mobile platforms.

Notice anything? Nothing was mentioned for the 360. Though Square did briefly mention and show a demo for Final Fantasy XI: Treasures of Aht Urhgan, nothing else Microsoft-related was mentioned. Every other platform in existence, including the Nintendo DS, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo Wii, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and mobile devices will be receiving Square games except for, unfortunately, the Xbox 360.

Final Fantasy moves forward, without Microsoft.

Yoichi Wada, President of SquareEnix, emphasized the FFXIII Fabula Nova Crystallis project as a cornerstone for transitioning to the next generation while keeping the company profitable. It's disappointing, therefore, to hear that the Xbox 360 isn't part of Square's plans, especially considering how impressive FFXIII trailer was. In the FF Versus XIII portion of the presentation, it seemed as though the Xbox 360 might finally receive a title. After an entirely CG trailer, there was a tantalizing pause before the screen displayed "PlayStation 3" in prominent, gold text.

While FFXIII was emphasized as exclusively for the PS3, FF Versus XIII was only mentioned as coming to the PS3. Reading any further into this could very well be folly, however, especially since we were reading the translation off the screen while Tetsuya Nomura, Director of FF Versus XIII, was speaking in Japanese. Could Microsoft have possibly prevented SquareEnix from making an announcement at their conference to save it for their own? Possibly, but very far from likely. At the conference's end, it was clear Square's direction for the future was with Sony, Nintendo, and cell phones.

Truth hurts, Microsoft.

The first word that came to mind upon reading this post was "Chocobowned".

At any rate, how are the sales figures doing for FFXI for the 360? Square Enix might just not be all too keen about that console due to how that game sold.

Which is kind of unfair, since it was available on the PC and PS2 for a long time. But hey, what can you do.

I can't say that this surprizes me. The XBox 360 has pittiful sales figures in Japan.

Well that pretty much means the 360 will suffer the same as its predecessor.
I hope you mean in Japan, because no Square Enix means little to Xbox anyway.

Braaiiiiiinss......
Square doesn't go along with Microsoft really much, because the citizens in Japan aren't as interested in the 360 as they are in the DS Lite. XD

No, I am not offending anyone. People have the right to choose what they like. T_T

Off-topic: YAY! DS LITE! ^_^

It's a shame.

Oh well. Glad to hear Dragon Quest is heading to Wii. :D

This may be a good business move for Square, because Xbox 360's *** is gonna be kicked to he** by PS3 and Wii, just like the current-gen consoles did to Dreamcast.

Lol, I agree. Not to mention Xbox 360 will be the most expensive out of them all giving it a disadvantage. However, the graphics for 360 are pretty good. Also, the online system for 360 is good so I can see why Square chose FF XI for 360.

Um, actually PS3 is the most expensive of them all. Starting at $500 and going up to $600. Anyways, Square-Enix shunning the Xbox360 is only going to hurt them in Japan, no where else.

Where's my fanfare?
I'm having doubts about the Playstation 3. Well, they're growing and growing anyway. With the price point at about $500 to $600, only hardcore gamers are likely to pick it up. It may look like the Xbox 360 is losing support, but its too early to tell. Since one of the games, Grand Theft Auto, is going on the Xbox 360 at the same time or around the time it comes out for the PS3, I might get the 360 instead of the PS3. We also don't know whether or not Square Enix will be supporting the 360 in the future. They just haven't announced anything for it yet. Only time will tell. All that can be said right now is that this'll be an interesting console war, and the winner is still up in the air.

Microsoft has the head start and their online services.
Sony has their customer loyalty and support of developers.
Nintendo has their hype, innovation, and price point.

Personally, I see Nintendo and Microsoft being on top and Sony bottoming out. But its still too early to tell.

On a final note. Sony's going to be running the Blu-Ray technology, and that's another risk they're taking. HD-DVDs and players are already out, and that may be the way technology will advance. Sometimes the best technology loses to the one most hyped/talked about.

That's a Bold move. Wait- NAHHH.

At a pricy.. Price, I would understand if sales wouldn't pick up, if they released the game for the 360. Unless FF fans have a 306 Already, they wouldn't buy it for the game at all. It's about the Bling. ALWAYS.

BOUT FRIGGIN TIME THEY GOT AN FF TITLE FOR WII.

Actually the Xbox 360 is the most expensive followed by the Playstation 3. As for Wii, I've heard numerous opinions on how stupid the Wii is so I agree with Alchemist on that the majority probably won't like the idea except the Nintendo Fans. So, yes I am a Fanboy for the Wii. However, I see nothing wrong with it.

The Xbox 360 is $299-$399, while the PS3 is going to be priced at $499-$599.--; Anyways, I wonder if any of the RPGs Mistwalker is making/publishing (Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Cry On) will actually help the 360 or not. Looks like time will only tell...

Fanboy or not, nobody has to like the Wii controller. I don't like it because I'm a fanboy. It's because it breaks new ground.

And second of all, I am not a Nintendo fanboy. I am an innovation fanboy. T_T

Final Fantasy VII and VIII were also for the PC. I heard they didn't sell well. Correct me if I'm wrong.

But the top price for the Xbox 360 around launch was around $700.

That's what stupid people who couldn't wait were paying for them on ebay or they were buying a bundle pack. The base price was $299 for core, $399 for premium.
