Start Playing Again?

Well, when I was 12, Pokemon was the real in thing, and of course so was the Trading Card Game; battles at lunch, etc.
I of course played Pokemon at that time, and have some somewhat rare cards tat you can get from the first couple of packs they ever made.
Once they started making the packs for Johto, I got one, and then...Just stopped playing, never really got back into it. I still have half a shoebox of cards, few holos in there.
Lately, I have been checking this part of the forum a lot, and somethings been making me want to play again. But I have sold so many cards that were good, and really, have none of the newer cards, have no idea whats what, stuff like that.
So I was wondering, is it really worth it to get back in the game? Is it worth spending all that money on booster packs and such, in the pursuit of one card I may need?
What do you guys think?

And also, are there any sites that may help me with whats rare, whats not, abilities, attacks, and such?

Well, first off, I'd check out the Reasons to Start Playing Again (it's called something like that) thread.

Start off with a couple of preconstructed decks, first. I'd go with the Unseen Forces pair. Maybe get a couple of UF boosters and try modifying the decks.

Only if you're positive you want to start playing again should you really spend a lot of money on the cards. I admit, they are slightly (playing that word loose and dangerous in the hope no-one replies "Slightly?!") overpriced.

Thanks a lot for the reply. I may just go out and do that, first I will read that thread though...

i loved the original card game but the newer ones aren't so good. I bought one and saw the cards of trainers and that the pokemon cards had really changed. Oh and Double Dash, Slightly!? Just joking. :D

I buy the booster boxes, hence...I pay about $2.00/pack with shipping...and I get the boxtopper.

This is really the best way to go. If you know you're going to purchase at least 20 boosters from the set, do yourself a favor and just get that box. That way, you not only get the complete common/uncommon set, but you'll get at least 1 EX card. I've never opened a box with less than 12 holos, so, you'll get your money's worth.

I calculate that 20 Walmart packs($3.29/each) is more expensive than buying a box of 36 boosters.

Before I express my opinion, I would like to state that it is all your choice.
However, if you are an oldschool PKMN fan like myself, I doubt you'd enjoy playing the TCG these days as much as you did 'back in the day'. The cards have changed [the company making the cards has changed as well], and the rules have totally been overhauled; leaving the game more confusing for oldschool players. If you were into the oldschool and want to stay that way, then don't mess with the new stuff. However, I'm not saying you shouldn't try something new. Heck, I might give it a go myself sometime. Just see if you like it, if you don't, leave it be.

$2.00 is like... around P 210 here... and boosters packs here are only P180, so its somewhat cheaper... ._.

Yes, I think buying a box is much more worth it than buying random booster packs from different stores... At least when buying a box, you have an assurance, you will get what you need...

And yes, it's your choice if you wanna go back to playing the TCGs... as long as you have the money... I might have to quit next year, after the last Nationals, since I can't afford to buy anymore booster packs...

Well, I got three decks, one Gardevoir themed one, one Dark Celebi themed one, and then a Latios themed one, all for only $10. I also found a Ludicolo and a reverse holo Entei.
I dunno if I want to start collecting again, I just play with my brother for fun sometimes.
