• Hi all
Just a notice, we recently discovered that someone got into a moderator account and started hard deleting a load of key and legacy threads...around 150 threads have been lost dating back to 2007 and some weeks ago so we can't roll the forums back.
Luckily no personal data could be accessed by this moderator, and we've altered the permissions so hard deleting isn't possible in the future
Sorry for any inconvenience with this and sorry for any lost posts.

Who said that was intentional though? It could easily of been loose skin for a selkie theme or setting up Popplio3's frills or even just be there because it'd look plain without it. Also, iirc, other performers wear similar collars.

Also, acrobatics = acrobat, not clown. Same with the bubbles, which are Popplio's 'props' for its acrobatics.

It's easy to say in hindsight what it's for now that we see the evolution but the way it looks just on popplio is extremely similar to how it looks on clowns, especially with it being frilled. I know acrobats are different, but that's why it seems like it was going for a general theme.

The ring it wears around its neck is the exact same as ones that clowns have. When you combine that with the official art of the acrobat stuff and the bubbles it made him seem like a clown/circus performer.

I don't see how acrobatics and bubbles have anything to do with clowns.Anyway it is still keeps to having an entertainer/performer theme and retains it's playful personality. It's like it's personality and theme have gone a complete 180.

Honestly it does seem like its personality has changed. It had those confident look poses, but in the concept art it's singing in one and in another just trying to look generally really glamorous looking.

Are you saying that one can't look glamorous and confident at the same time? And that you can only have either one or the other because an entertainer that is not confident woukd not make for a good entertainer. It's not like those 2 are even conflicting. Not only that, even if you consider it a change it's not like it's huge one.You make it sound like it's personality is a lot different than it was before. It's still a happy, playful pokemon that enjoys entertaining people.

I don't know, I just don't like the change it makes into essentially becoming a mermaid. I like all three first form starters a lot for certain reasons, and it's just disappointing that two them essentially lose the things I liked them for in the first place.

I think we should wait to judge the final evos until we see the way they are portrayed in the games. We don't know anything beyond the leaked character models, we could easily get some nice flavor text or additional artwork the way we have been that would ease your concerns.

Seems like most of the starters change attitude by the end of the line. Actually it only seems like meganium among a few don't, and Serperior who just stays serious. Otherwise they all seems to get angry/serious by the end. I think it takes a wild amount of confidence to be an entertainer of any sort, especially a singer.

That's true. Most starters do go from happy-go-lucky to INTENSE.

What do you guys think happens to the starter you and Hau don't choose? Does Lillie get it? Or Gladion? Or even the opposite gender character?

Any of those or none of those, I suppose. It's not like the remaining Starter(s) going unassigned hasn't happened before.

Maybe Gladion get's it, or nobody. I'm pretty sure Lillie was said to not be a trainer, so it's probably not her.

I never sides on the clown sea lion thing, you can go back to this thread early stages and I called this fad a poketuber induced prediction.

At best it looked like an air horn in my old opinion and this is why I speculated on the hooded and elephant seals in the first place, heck I even posted the bone structure and the proboscis of both species.

The clown is something people saw, but as someone has said the "loose skin" does make sense for a Selkie.

And to be on topic, I don't think Gladion gets a starter, this is pretty much wishlisting from people that want the second coming of silver and mash him up with Calem to justify the 2 aces, even when Gladion is stated to have a partner pokemon in type null already.

Simply put, the way that the frill looks on Popplio looks exactly like a stereotypical, cliche (note the words I am using) clown attire - the way that clowns are usually portrayed in fiction/cartoons. However, that is purely based on the way that the first stage of Popplio looks. We still don't know what its second stage will look like. It could keep the theme, or change drastically. Only thing we can do is wait and see. But so far, a circus seal is the main vibe I get from Popplio, especially the official art of it balancing on a ball.

It looks like a backwards pump horn, some saw a clown, I saw a musical instrument.

The clown theme was blown out of proportion due to poketubers, heck I remember the Kefka Popplio meme on that period.

I have to agree. I think the circus clown motif in popplio is plain and overly obvious...this doesn't mean it can't turn into a mermaid or anything, but it seems a strange thing to deny to me. It is WAY more clown then Selkie...there's nothing so plainly Selkie about Popplio as there is circus seal for sure. Doesn't mean he can't/won't have it later and be a Selkie combination. GameFreak and Nintendo love their multiple inspiration Pokémon.

I'm not using this to deny the concept art. I just think if it is real, then let's just call it what it is. There are some big jumps from first to finale stage in popplio and litten, and that's okay! It's not game breaking, or life altering or anything. Just a bit different then the past, but then everything about this game is a bit different from past. Some might not see it as much of a jump, and that's great and nothing wrong with that, but there is obviously a large portion of the Pokémon community talking about it so it's noticeable and not non-existent.

Ultimately we will get what we get, regardless of changes or difference, and wewill learn to love it, or ignore them for other more favourable Pokémon in our eyes.

I agree there is a big jump between evo 1 and evo3, we also can't deny the starterleak because it is like 98% real, the only explanation I can come up with is that the starters will have multiple final evolutions(day and night) or something like that. And even then it would be a big jump. I still think these games will be the most changing game ever made, so I would not be surprised if they make these big jumps.

I'll either end up boxing the starter or going with rowlet if it ends up looking better than it does in the concept art because with rowlet I at least like the concept it evolves into unlike the other two, just not a fan of the design.

I'm thinking the same. I was going to keep Rowlet but Alola Executtor sems like a better grass type to choose.
