Steel-Type Pokémon of the Week
Pokémon: Metagross
Tier: OU
Ability: Clear Body
Item: Air Balloon
Nature: Adamant
EV Spread: 252 Atk, 252 HP, 4 SpD
Moves: Earthquake, Bullet Punch, Zen Headbutt, Meteor Mash/Ice Punch
Summary: Oh Metagross, a Pokémon that has a good Attack stat, which is actually better than Scizor's, but he is still less used than the Bug due to it's Technician Ability. Metagross actually surpasses Scizor in all areas Stat wise. However, the metal menace sports two very common weaknesses, Ground and Fire. While an Air Balloon negates Ground's effect, Fire still remains strong and is able to OHKO Metagross even while it's holding an Occa Berry. However, Metagross has it's uses. Earthquake gives it the ability to hit Fire, Electric, Poison, Steel, and Rock, one of which is it's main weakness. Bullet Punch provides the ability to hit things much faster than it such as Volcarona. Despite this move being used to cause at least a small portion of damage, speedy Pokémon tend to be defensively weak, allowing a decent amount of damage to be done. Zen Headbutt provides STAB with a chance to flinch on top of an already great Attack. The last spot can be used for either Meteor Mash which hits hard and provides STAB or Ice Punch, which is a great counter for Dragons. Metagross would be a widely used Dragon counter due to resisting it and learning Ice Punch, but due to Dragons wide movepool and the ability to learn Fire moves, he is often rendered useless against them. As can be seen, Metagross is a powerful Pokémon, who's main downfall is the condition of the current metagame, which includes the more powerful Scizor, and the number of Pokémon able to learn Fire and Ground type moves.
