New Rival (more than one).
New Badguys/ Goodguys.
Pick your own path also. Its kinda like you pick what you want to be like a Gym leader, Badguy, Elite 4 champion, Proffesor, Regular trainer, Breeder stuff like that.

And picking your own path won't happen since Nintendo wants to promote the ideals of treating your Pokemon well while journeying the region with them. Being a Gym Leader would be incredibly soporific. u_u
