It may be a case of naturally picked, but that doesn't mean that the dynamic is anymore interesting, that just means the plot at least excuses why Mallow is so underplayed. Keeping doing that in Gen 8 would make sense I guess, but that wouldn't justify keeping Mallow's presence any further if she's not going to contribute.

I also don't buy into the recklessness equals more slapstick rule. You can make more cerebral characters flawed and clownish as well, if anything they can be more fun due to their neuroses and their tendency to overthink everything (eg. Twilight Sparkle is as much a self tormenting butt monkey as Rainbow Dash in MLP). Add to that a lot of things just target Ash without his impulsiveness provoking it anyway. There is a reason some consider him a designated monkey because, while he isn't the target of EVERY joke, there's much more gags thatare specialised for just him or require his recklessness to be Flanderized, or alternatively make light on the fact he is being singled out for pain and humiliation, while in previous series there were usually at least a few more running gags and comical pathos moments for the other characters and their own deficiencies (there is Sophocles' bad shape and Lillie's phobia, though obviously the latter is gone).

One of Mallow's rare fun exceptions was the spa episode where Ash was actually instigating slapstick for once when she was playing a stick in the mud role. That was a rare fresh dynamic that could have made her more vibrant if used more often and let Ash's comedy be more versatile. I also loved Lillie's 'wrong genre savvy' role in the AF Poni episode. The Ultra Guardian episodes also tended to be fun for giving lots of characters moments bumbling around trying to figure out what to do in a characteristic fashion (though naturally Mallow and Lana usually got put in the background because they don't really have shtick for them).

It may not be gender discrimination directly (Hapu is flawed, and Olivia does slapstick, if in a much more forced way) but they do right now have a very bad pattern making the archetypes of the modern female companions that flexible and fun on their own (as said however Lillie is stop and go). This is arguably the first series where the male companions are dominating the limelight, with episodes they just skip the formalities and throw the girls out of the story altogether.

As said these are things that might debunk my own theory, but they still don't state why Mallow would be an ideal third companion for next series. I'd much prefer one that could maintain as much presence and agency and entertainment value as the other protagonists throughout, and there are far better candidates for that right now. Even the whole cooking angle could be done with more vibrancy with other characters.

Mallow is the SM version of Brock but since her design is cuter (obviously, lol), and she has the most tragic backstory for a main character now, it puts her a bit ahead of post OS-Brock.

Although I'd say classic era Brock is still the best supporting character, but then his character got flanderized as the show progressed.

More then that, make her relationship with her Tsereena mean something.

Well if she ended up a third companion the same way Brock did there's a possibility she might just leave Tsareena at Alola altogether for a new bunch.

Granted the plus point of post-OS Brock was that most of his Pokemon of that era were MUCH more memorable, so maybe that would be for the better.

Anyone finds it curious that Nanu and Giovanni are old acquaintances? Outside of the CD Drama we don't have anything on Giovanni's backstory. It makes me wonder if we're going to see more of Giovanni(when you also add his game role in USUM), and what might Giovanni have been doing before he became the head of Team Rocket

Since it's meant to be character speculation...

We all know Sophocles is afraid of the dark. But did him overcome it in the Charjabug evolution episode? I think I recall he going out the cave and it didn't seem like Vikavolt was lighting the way. What do you think? Will it be brought up again or will they continue it as a gag?

We see him deciding not to panic and gets out his phone as alternative light. It's maybe a suggestion he's still afraid but isn't going into panic mode every time. That's kinda why I like Sophocles, there are at least subtle details of his character evolving from the very sheltered kid he was before.

The writers have attempted to add more depth, though. In the most recent episode it is confirmed that Mallow's mom was the one to catch Bounsweet to keep Mallow company. Because of this episode, we get more of a sense of the relationship between Mallow and Tsareena, and how they relate back to her mom. Now that we know this, I would love to see them grow in the present - but I would say that the writers are at least trying, given that this backstory and context was just recently given. But I would like to see more.

Mallow might not be executed perfectly, but she's at least a nuanced and likeable character.

She tends to blend into her surroundings which vexes me, but yes, I also find her tolerable when compared to Takeshi's flirtations.

Mostly it a last gift for Mallow before she kick the bucket. I know that nice and all, but there should have shown the special bond that Bounsweet means to Mallow. Without that it make Bounsweet kind of tic on to Mallow after her mother dies. And really Bounsweet only gets caught and because the world it has to be Mallow's friend. If I was the writer of this episode Bounsweet and Mallow would have a moment together that shows the relationship growing instead of not doing anything with it.

I think the problem is, while it is substance, that it's still largely through backstory and exposition. It's tell, don't show. In present day they are still probably the blandest bond of the six main characters and their signatures (and most of their secondaries for that matter).

Problems come from lack of noteworthy interactions, especially due to the lack of aforementioned flaws with Mallow for Tsareena to act as a crutch towards like the other trainers, along with the fact Tsareena doesn't really interact meaningfully with any other Pokemon besides smacking Rowlet as a running gag. They skipped over any training and hardships between them, so there's not really anything for them to bond through left. Shaymin might resolve this but I can easily see it just being another cute 'baby' type that doesn't offer any new ordeals.

Yeah, sometimes the classmates feel kind of bland. And splitting up between boys and girls doesnt help either. They can say they are the best team ever, but is that really true?

Sick of dealing with idiots.
Okay, so Ash got the Steelium-Z in today's episode, because Pikachu choose it from out of the all the other normal Z-Crystals that Hapu offered.
