No, you have a point. But still. Especially Melemele and Akala look extremly small. Melemele takes a long time, since its the starter/learning island with many cutscenes, while Akala feels so small because all three trials follow so quick after one another. Take away the cutscenes and Melemele and Akala can be done extremely quick, since the spacing of routes on Ula'Ula and Poni have been done better imo. Three trials on Akala also feel extremely cramped, if you take the size difference between Akala and Ula'Ula into comparison it would have made more sense for Ula'Ula to have a third trial.

In the anime, you feel they are stretching out the School Setting as long as possible, so they don't hit the next island to early.
I don't recall there being more than one or two routes between the cities after Shalour in Kalos, either. They still made it work. They can make this work, too.

Also, I was under the assumption the school stuff on Melemele was dragged out because they were waiting for USM to be announced. If they continued on, they would have fallen into the same pitfall they fell into in BW. USM would have unexpectedly been dropped on them, and they'd have to change things in order to market the new games.

Well.... i don't know if you call the Victory Road a route (I do), since there was route 21, between Snowbelle and Victory Road, which also connected Route 21 and Route 22 to the Victory Road.

Maybe you are right about the school stuff, but they were lucky USUM was going to be announced, since that meant they had a reason to drag it out (If USUM wasn't announced or was coming out in 2018, they still had to drag it out) else they would have already been done with Akala and possibly already been on Ula'Ula before 2018 was over. This because, imo, there would have been no space between routes to put anime exclusive towns/cities like in previous regions.

If they give Jessie Bewear, they damn better give James something equally as bad *** and OP.
If James gets it? Then I don't care about Jessie getting something equally as cool, all she needs is a Salazzle and I'll be happy with her team. She always had more Pokemon in the past, giving James Bewear would more than make it up to me at least. Yes, I know Plumeria... they can have a rivalry, it'd make things interesting. Salazzle's the only current Pokemon in Alola that suits her, and Team Rocket getting a Fire type is long over due. Not to mention it's been quite awhile since Jessie had a Poison type, and the Fire type z-move suits her xD

I know it's unlikely since it's already been a COTD, but I wouldn't mind seeing James get a Morelull/Shiinotic, since the anime establishes it can both drain and replenish life energy for those around it, making it a humorous variant of Chimecho (not positive what attack this represents looking at it's move set though, it doesn't seem to have a Heal Bell counterpart).

That would work well with both trainers' characters for me. Give Jessie Bewear so she has the powerhouse she can smoothly command (compared to Mimikyu that tends to do it's own thing) and give James the more technical Pokemon to utilise more strategically to help the whole team.

I also like TR having Pokemon that aren't just projectile throwers, since that tempts the writers less to turn them into stormtroopers.

IDK man, it took me over sixty hours to beat the main plot and many lets-players had to do one hour episodes of the game just to finish the games up in time.
I have no doubt that the staff extended Melelele because of USUM so that we wouldn't have a repeat of BW

honestly SM had WAAAAAAY too much talking, pointing out pointless stuff, and way too much dialogue that could have been put to the side. Makes it feel like FOREVER in the beginning, but I've also restarted around 10 times already.

Not with James.... Mallow can get the shroom but I don't want to see that thing anywhere near James.
Usually the anime changes my opinion on Pokemon like it did with Hawlucha, Inkay, Bewear, and the Swinub line... but I still utterly despise Shinotic. That episode did nothing to change my mind. I don't want him getting a Grass type at all this region. It'd just be freaking stupid if both Ash and James skipped a Grass type in one region then proceeded to starting over the pattern again in the next region. What's the point of giving him a Grass type anyways when a Grass specialist is on the cast and only has one Pokemon? Salazzle at least has the excuse of being feminine and more suited for a female trainer to be in possession of.
Minior's the only Pokemon around that can fill the small cute role James sometimes has

Whats the point in James having a Water type with a Water type specialist on the cast who only has one Pokemon. The point you are making is invalid.

Morelull acting as a gag Pokemon with James just seems unnecessary to me cuz he has Mareanie for that purpose already. If he didn't have Mareanie I'd be all for Morelull/Shiinotic, but now it seems kind of late to me.

I am hoping that with Ultra Sun and Moon coming out they add official gyms to the game and Anime. This way Ash's team can get a lot more development. The anime unfortunately has been boring for me without being focused on battling.

I hope not. Gyms were around for a long time now. Let a gen without gyms for once.

But winning a League has been established as Ash's primary goal for a long time. And collecting 8 Gym badges is the only path to compete in a League. How is it right to change Ash's long established quest before he even achieves his goal of winning a League?

Oh come on, after having finally played through all of Sun's Trials, I can say that while nice in concept, Trials are really not all that great. First off, why only 7? Such an odd number when 8 was the benchmark for 19 years. And why were some so horribly boring and easy? I OHKO'd Kiawe's Trial with a single Bulldoze from a Mudbray and I OHKO'd Kommo-o with a Dazzling Gleam. I only really found the Wishiwashi and Mimikyu Trials to be entertaining. Mostly because I went out of my way to make it hard on me vs. Wishiwashi by not using my Dartrix and Mimikyu honestly surprised me with its speed and strength, as well as Gengar being quite a good pokémon to have at its side.

So yeah, Sun and Moon were brave enough to go without Gyms. Chops for the attempt, but not enough to perminantly erase gyms from the franchise.

Sometimes it's ok to take a step back and rethink your method of approach.

taking a break for one gen won't be hurting no one, he's def got time for this.

It's been proven that taking a step back from something when you've been stuck is a great idea. This could be exactly what Ash needs to actually win a league.

Maybe, but if Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon introduces Gyms then I will be elated for sure.

The anime's current lack of focus on battling doesn't have anything to do with the lack of Gyms, IMHO. The writers could have just as easily made this series incredibly battle-focused, even though there are Trials instead of Gyms. Likewise, the writers could have decided to make previous series less battle-focused, even though there were Gyms.

I also disagree that Ash's team can only get more development if there are Gyms. The level of character development for the Pokémon doesn't depend on whether or not there are Gyms vs. Trials.

Ash's primary goal is to become a Pokémon Master, not to win a League. Sun & Moon has not changed his goal at all. He is still aiming to become a Pokémon Master. He collects badges and participates in regional Leagues because that's apparently one step toward becoming a Pokémon Master, but it has never been stated to be the only step. This time around, he has decided to attend school and participate in the Island Challenge.

Where did I state that I want the gyms to be permanently gone?
You found the Trials easy. I found extremely easy both Gyms and Trials. If you blame the Trials for the game's difficulty, I think it's better to complain at GF which erased B2W2's Challenge Mode for the next games.

This. It's already too late for gyms anyways imo. If anyone is participating in gyms then it should be Lillie.

He has the equivalent of a single gym badge. Far too late indeed.

Okay, you're correct in that you only stated "for this generation", and honestly that's what I actually wanted to comment on, but I apparently got a little sideswept with my own argument.

And I am a bit irritated by the amount of handholding the games have been doing. I found Y to be horrid with those "rivals", and Sun has been worse with the RotomDex. This problem lies with GameFreak. Sure, Sun has a decent enough story in terms of characters and their motivations, but so did White for what I'm concerned and it didn't hold my hand, though it was quite linear as well.

But in SM, you can do the League after completing all the Trials.

To be fair, other than eliminating the hand holding and giving Gym Leaders 6 IV, EV trained competitive Pokemon, there isn't really much GF can do to make Pokemon hard. And they're not going to, either, because kids are the target demographic, not us.
