Then use something better like salamence, slaking, tyranitar,etc who are all better sweepers than absol.

You're getting him a Pokemon for his birthday? Well, I would suggest you get him something cooler like a Flygon, or a Breloom. I consider both of those good sweepers (maybe not so much Flygon).
