TALES OF KAMI
(Rated PG - 13, for violence and the use of alcohol)
Greetings, weary traveler. Forgive me; I am not accustomed to seeing strange wanderers, such as you, in these parts. Please, have a seat on that rock over there and join me for a little drink and a story. I have been told that I am a great storyteller. Heheh...well, I’m not sure if that is true, but I do dabble in myths and legends...the folklore of Japan. Would you care to hear a tale or two? I’m sure I have a few to spare...
===================
This story takes place in the wondrous land called “Ashihara-no-Nakatsukuni”, or “the Earthly Realm”. A land long told of in many myths and legends, it is. It is said to have had mystic forests, snowy mountains, and even haunted caves. Its many hot springs were quite an attraction too, so I hear. Having trouble picturing this place? Here, I happen to have a map of it.
Do you see those four small villages? Those are the villages of eternal seasons. The one to the east is Harumura, the village of eternal spring. To the south, you find Natsumura, the village of eternal summer. To the west is located Akimura, the village of eternal autumn. And in the north you can see Fuyumura, the village of eternal winter.
====================
Over a thousand years ago, the once-peaceful land of Ashihara was thrown into a burning cauldron of chaos. All hell broke loose, literally, when Enma, the King of Yomi, the Ruler of the Underworld, emerged from his netherworld-abode. He had grown weary of only punishing the sinful dead, whose cries were but shrieks and moans. He longed to hear the cries of every creature, good or bad. These would fill him with pleasure. So, with a host of undead warriors, Enma emerged from Yomotsuhirasaka, the Gate of the Underworld, and rampaged through Ashihara, killing everyone in his path.
But this parade of his did not go unnoticed. The monks, worshippers of the goddess and gods of Sun, Moon, and Storm, summoned the help of the Kami. Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi, and Susano’o answered their plea, and declared war on Enma and his soldiers of Yomi.
The three Kami met Enma and his warriors in heated combat on the plains between the four eternal season villages. For days, the battle raged on. Finally, Tsukuyomi and Susano’o managed to subdue the soldiers of Yomi, leaving Amaterasu to take care of Enma. With her sacred mirror, Yata-no-Kagami, Amaterasu sealed Enma back into the depths of the Underworld. But just before the seal was completed, Enma struck the mirror, shattering it.
With the help of her Kami brothers, Tsukuyomi and Susano’o, Amaterasu completed the seal, locking Enma away forever. The shards of her mirror were hidden across Ashihara, never to be found, for they were the key to reviving the slumbering Ruler of the Underworld.
Many hundreds of years passed, and the people of Ashihara came to regard the old event as mere legend. The land was now united under the rule of the Shiroirenge family, who dwelt in the White Lotus Palace, within the gates of Ashihara’s capital city, Sekai-hana, the Flower of the World. The great city was located to the northeast of Harumura, in the plains of eternal spring, where it saw the beauty of always-blooming trees, and the warmth of the sun.
Then, even the great Flower of the World, found itself to be strangled by weeds. The king’s right-hand man, a devil by the name of Yashasuke, murdered the king, and sought to usurp the throne. However, there was still one obstacle he needed to dispose of...
...the king’s daughter...Yurihime Shiroirenge...the crown-princess of Ashihara.
====================
At the same time, an evil monk, well-versed in the demonic arts of reanimation, was seeking out the shards of Amaterasu’s mirror. His goal was to awaken the spirit of Enma, the King of Yomi, and inherit the demon king’s immortality and hellish powers. He sent out his possessed, animated warriors of stone to seek the shards. When they found one, they were to kill anyone standing in their way, and bring the shard back to the evil monk’s monastery.
With all of these goings-on, it seemed impossible, to the eyes of a mere mortal, how the Kami were going to intervene. But the way the Kami acted was not always by-the-book. On this occasion, they decided the best way to go about protecting Ashihara was to utilize a more unorthodox method. This time, they would use the people and monsters of Ashihara to save the Earthly Realm.
Well, maybe they would throw in a couple of Kami...just to be consistent.
====================
And this, strange traveler, is where you come in. You might be a human, a Kappa, a Tengu, or even a Kijimuna...it matters little to me. Perhaps you know what is going on, perhaps not. Maybe you have your own goals, but then again, maybe you don’t. Perhaps you will join in the fight to protect the princess, or perhaps you will put a stop to the evil monk’s quest for the mirror shards. It’s up to you.
But know this: your choices could very well determine the future of Ashihara...and all of Japan...whether that be its protection, or its demise.
Rules:
1. Follow all SPPF and RPG forum rules.
2. Keep in mind that this is a PG-13 rated RPG, for violence and the use of alcohol. Nothing more.
3. There will be flaming, spamming, or trolling. Trolls are not one of the races in this RPG. The closest thing would be acting like an Oni. And there will be none of that either.
4. Use proper grammar, punctuation, and capitalization.
5. Please, please, please...only sign up if you are going to post. And try to stick with the RPG if you are accepted.
6. There will be no reservations for this one.
7. You may sign up with up to two characters. If there are still spots left open, then I may allow a third character.
8. Lastly, HAVE FUN!
Races – What will you be? Keep in mind that the relations between humans and most Yokai (monsters; basically anything that is not human) are not very good. Most Yokai aren’t very welcome in human villages, and especially not in human cities, and vice-versa. There are a few exceptions to this rule, as in the case of Inugami, which are commonly seen. Other Yokai take on the forms of humans so that they may live in peace within the human villages.
Human (2 SPOTS OPEN)
Description: Humans are the dominant race in Ashihara. They are the most Kami-like in appearance and personality, and, as such, are often considered (by their own kind, mostly) to be the most important of the races. Humans have formed cities and villages, and are ruled by their respective kings and chieftains. They have a passion for creating, much like the Kami. Unlike the other races, average humans have no magical abilities of their own power. Rather, magic powers are drawn from other sources, such as Kami-worship or special items (swords, jewelry, etc.). They are the most balanced of the races, being moderately strong, fast, and intelligent, though they have very limited magical power. There are a few exceptions to this rule of magic, however. There are those who are well-taught in the ways of the heavenly or demonic arts.
Kappa (2 SPOTS OPEN)
Description: Kappa are fun-loving water monsters who resemble monstrous turtles. Their heads are open at the top, and filled with water. This is where they obtain their strength. If the water spills, they are sapped of their energy, and crumple on the ground until they die of dehydration or their heads are filled again. They have a very odd love of cucumbers, and will do almost anything to obtain one. Kappa are a more strength-oriented race, and very fast in the water. Out of water, however, they’re (pardon the pun) all washed up. Intelligence and magic is something most of them lack.
Kitsune (1 SPOT OPEN)
Description: Kitsune are magical foxes. Because of their ability to change shape, they are often considered to be tricksters. While this may be true for some, not all Kitsune are like this. Some are actually quite fond of humans and wish to live among them, although their mischievous natures do tend to show up every now and then. Kitsune are judged in power and wisdom by the number of tails they possess. A one-tailed Kitsune can merely take on the form of a little girl, but a three-tailed one can become old men, young women, and little girls. Upon reaching the fifth tail, Kitsune obtain all of their natural abilities, and can transform into nearly anything. The most tails a Kitsune can have is nine, and there is only one nine-tailed Kitsune in known-existence. Most Kitsune are found near Akimura and Harumura, but rarely live within the villages themselves. They are fast and intelligent, but lack physical strength. Their magical power is very great.
Bakeneko/Nekomata (a Bakeneko has one tail, while a Nekomata has two; CLOSED)
Description: Bakeneko are cat spirits. Because of their ability to change shape, they are usually considered to be mischief-makers, and for good reason. They enjoy playing tricks on humans, and even other monsters. When a Bakeneko reaches full-power and maturity, its tail splits in two, and it becomes a Nekomata. Bakeneko and Nekomata can transform into old men, young women, little girls, small weapons, and even other animals. Most Bakeneko and Nekomata are found near Akimura and Natsumura, but rarely live within the villages themselves. Like the Kitsune, they are fast, intelligent, and magical, but without much physical strength.
Tengu/Daitengu (a Daitengu is a more powerful Tengu; 2 SPOTS OPEN)
Description: Tengu are a type of monster that resemble humans with avian characteristics. While human-like in appearance, they usually sport large bird wings and long noses, because their transformation magic is imperfect. Every Tengu carries a bird mask to use when it wishes to become its more monstrous, bird-of-prey form. Tengu are the self-proclaimed guardians of forests and mountain passes, and can be found in those locations in abundance. They are fast and strong, but not very intelligent. Daitengu, however, are very smart, and have powerful magical abilities.
Inugami (1 SPOT OPEN)
Description: Inugami are dog spirits, and are extremely powerful. Despite being perfectly capable of existing independently, most usually prefer to live with their masters as watchful and bold companions. Inugami can be found almost anywhere, and are often summoned to fight for their masters. They are the most commonly seen of the monsters. People have grown accustomed to seeing them here and there. Inugami lack physical strength, but they are fast and highly intelligent. They have an immense amount of magical prowess.
Kamaitachi (CLOSED)
Description: Kamaitachi are sickle-wielding weasels. Their motto is “strike before stricken”, and they follow it excellently. They are masters of speed and quick attacks, and are capable of flooring even enemies four times their size. They are quick-witted, and extremely skilled at surprising opponents with their speed. They exist in areas with tall grass, especially near Akimura. Kamaitachi rely primarily on their speed and intelligence, and let their momentum do the rest. They can use wind magic, but little else of the magic-kind.
Kameosa (1 SPOT OPEN)
Description: Kameosa are ghoulish creatures that have the form of large sake jars with goblin-like limbs extending from them. Their faces are made from cracks in the jars, which can expand and close again, just like normal eyes and mouths. They have been known to get drunk in their own sake, and will share with others...on occasion. They aren’t very powerful creatures, and primarily give others intelligence on certain events and places. Kameosa have a little bit of magical prowess, but almost no speed and very little strength.
Kijimuna (1 SPOT OPEN)
Description: Kijimuna are friendly, but impish, forest spirits who resemble small, tanned children and have fiery red hair. They are adept fishermen, but have an irrational fear of the octopus...even very small ones. Most of the time, these small creatures go about wearing nothing but grass skirts, but will on occasion garb themselves in other forms of clothing. They tend to have bad memory. Kijimuna are quick and very magical, but lack much physical strength and intelligence. They spend most of their time in forests fishing in rivers.
Shojo (1 SPOT OPEN)
Description: Shojo are beast-men with long, red hair who have dark tan skin and wear traditional Japanese clothing. More often than not, they can be found on beaches drinking sake. These guys are usually considered to be humanoid orangutan, but at this, they are appalled. They are nothing like their ape-brethren, so they claim. Shojo are typically very slow creatures, often because they are drunk, but they boast great physical prowess and are fairly intelligent. They have very little magical power.
Lesser Kami (CLOSED)
Description: Lesser Kami are the lower forms of the spirit-deities, such as Amaterasu or Tsukuyomi. They lack the immense power of their higher-ups, but still boast more magical power than any of the other races. They are spirit-like in form usually, but can change shape at will, taking on the form of humans or animals, or even objects. When a lesser Kami does something to offend a greater Kami, it may become subject to the greater Kami’s wrath, and be turned into a human or animal as punishment, though they still retain some of their magical and physical prowess. The lesser Kami are the most diverse, because there are some who are purely magical, while there are others who are completely physical in abilities. They usually have great intelligence, but this is also not set in stone, for there are some who lack any sort of intelligence. Lesser Kami are capable of entering a Kami Mode, which gives them a higher magical power, and may also alter their appearance slightly.
(You may notice that both Tanuki and Oni are not on this list. This is because there will be only one Tanuki in this RPG, and he is an important NPC. The Oni will be one of our main enemies, so they are also not included as a possible race.)
The Tales of Kami Guide to Magic – Heavenly and Demonic Arts
The Earthly Realm is home to many different forms of magic, which have been passed down from generation to generation. These forms of magic include, but are not limited to:
- Transformation Magic (one of the most common forms of magic; altering the appearance of oneself; used most by Kitsune, Bakeneko/Nekomata, Tengu, and lesser Kami)
- Summoning Magic (a form of magic that involves calling upon the help of a spirit or monster to aid you; typically used to summon Inugami, but can also be used for Kitsune and lesser Kami)
- Elemental Magic (the magic of fire, wind, water, lightning, earth, ice, and darkness; mostly used for offensive purposes, such as attacking an enemy)
- Spiritual Magic (a form of magic focused solely on the transferring of souls to the plain of spirits; transforming oneself into a spirit for a period of time, allowing the caster to go just about anywhere, and possibly possess the bodies of others)
- Healing Magic (a form of magic that involves the healing of another using supernatural means; typically used by Kitsune, Bakeneko/Nekomata, Inugami, and lesser Kami)
- Reanimation Magic (the most malicious form of magic; can be utilized by only the most skilled of magic-users; involves the reviving of a dead body or object by inserting a devilish spirit into it; the possessed corpse or object follows its master’s orders without question)

Sign up form –
Name: (simple, right? Eh...no. Names must be Japanese, and shouldn’t be something utterly random. Nicknames, however, may be in another language, so long as it’s believable)
Age: (make it realistic. Yokai typically live longer than humans do)
Race: (use one of the races listed above, unless you can come up with a good reason why you want to use an unmentioned race. I will still not accept a Tanuki, however, so bear that in mind)
Appearance: (at least twelve good sentences; two paragraphs. Detailed is great, but try not to bore me with really long descriptions about one simple thing)
Personality: (at least twelve good sentences; two paragraphs. Try to make the character fairly believable, and give him/her/it a decent goal in life)
History: (at least sixteen good sentences; three paragraphs. Give the character an interesting background. Again, detail is good, but too much might drive me up the wall)
Fighting Style and Weapons: (how does your character fight? With quick moves and punching? Hacking and slashing? Elaborate. Any weapons? Tell about them. Describe all of that here)
Magic Style: (any magical powers? List and describe them here)
Other: (anything else I should know? Put it in this little section)
My sign-ups...
Name: Kouji Kaminari (called the “Child of Thunder” by some)
Age: Unknown (appears to be about 15)
Gender: Male
Race: Lesser Kami (banished)
Appearance: Kouji, though only fifteen in appearance, boasts a physique many young men desire. He is thin, but muscular. Kouji’s face retains much of its childlike appearance, having matured just a little. His eyes are a shining green color, but change to golden-yellow when he enters his Kami Mode. Black lines run down from the corners of his eyes to the middle of his cheeks. Kouji’s hair is black and spiky, and is pushed back by a crimson-colored headband that is decorated in the center by a yellow sun symbol. In Kami Mode, his spiky hair changes in color from black to white. His ears are large and pointed, giving him an almost impish appearance.
Kouji wears clothes that suit his hotheaded, rough personality very well. His black tunic is often kept undone, revealing the muscular figure beneath, and the sleeves are rolled up past his elbows, so as not to get in the way. The tunic reaches his thighs, and hangs loosely. A black sash is tied around his waist, keeping his faded, yellow breeches in check. These pants widen and gather around the middle of his shins, and end there. What appears to be half of a black skirt covers the upper portion of his left leg, and is attached to his sash. A pair of sandals dons his feet. The sacred jewel of Amaterasu, Yasakani no Magatama, is attached to a necklace that he wears around his neck.
Personality: Kouji is an unpredictable, reckless individual who has the makings of a strong warrior. What he lacks in brains he makes up for in determination. Although many dismiss him as a mere ‘prankster’ and ‘annoyance’, some actually admire his bravery and strong will. He hates being underestimated and will nearly always throw a fit if compared to a child. Despite his immaturity, Kouji will sometimes reveal a strategic side that no one ever suspects. Because he is a ‘prankster’ and prone to mischief, he is very good at coming up with over-the-top, humorous plans for getting past an enemy or some such.
He is a self-absorbed individual at first, and only does things that will benefit himself. His “master plan” is to do good works in Ashihara until he is admitted back into Takamagahara, the Heavenly Plain. For now, his plan of action is to obtain all of the mirror shards so that he can fix Amaterasu’s mirror and give it back to her. He thinks that by returning Amaterasu's legendary mirror his "pedestal of divinity" will be returned to him.
Kouji is hotheaded and easily-angered. When angry, Kouji can unleash a level of power that would catch even the most powerful of warriors by surprise. This is something his opponents often find out the hard way. His intelligence and common-sense are greatly lacking, but nevertheless, Kouji always manages to outsmart his enemies with his mischievous battle-tactics and quick moves. In battle he is capricious, and one never knows exactly what he will do next. He is full of surprises.
History: Everything had been as it should be just a year ago. Kouji Kaminari was known then as simply 'Kaminari' in Takamagahara. A lesser Kami of Amaterasu's line, he stood proudly on the podium of a shining deity. Nearly limitless, his power was. That is, until that fateful day. He had done nothing wrong, really he hadn't. He'd just taken a little break from the duties of a Kami, and opened the gate to the Earthly Realm. Intrigued by the goings on of the humans and the Yokai, Kaminari took on the form of a boy and waltzed into Sekai-hana, ready to cause some mischief. He'd known other Kami who had done similar things, so he wasn't worried.
Well, actually, he was. For a little added mischief, he had taken Amaterasu's sacred jewel; partly because he wanted to have a little extra power for his pranks, and partly because he wanted to see whether or not Lady Amaterasu's legendary temper was as terrifying as he had heard. Unfortunately, it was twice that. Amaterasu, being the near-almighty deity that she is, found out of Kaminari's actions, and sent a host of lesser Kami to track him down. Even with the added power of Amaterasu's sacred jewel, Kaminari couldn't defeat Amaterasu's minions, and he was captured and brought before the queenly deity. Her eyes piercing through him like shining daggers, Amaterasu sentenced Kaminari to a life in the form of a human, for he was now a fallen Kami, banished to the Earthly Realm, and incapable of returning to the Heavenly Plain.
And so, Kaminari (now called 'Kouji Kaminari') began his new life on earth. He retained some of his Kami powers, but far less than what he had before. After some wanderings, he heard tell of Amaterasu's legendary mirror, its many pieces hidden across the land. An idea struck him almost immediately. That was how he was going to get his honor and position back. He was going to bring Amaterasu back her Mirror.
Fighting Style and Weapons: At the moment, Kouji carries no weapons with him, for he considers his fists to be the greatest weapons. He uses a style of martial art very similar to Northern Shaolin Kung Fu. He uses his feet and legs in whirling circular blocks, and his hands and arms in his quick, aggressive attacks. A wide stance and constant movement is the secret to his intense fighting style.
Magic: Spiritual and Transformation Magic. Kouji can only use his Spiritual Magic when he is in Kami Mode. This magic-style allows him to transfer himself to the plain of the spirits for a short time, and then appear someplace else just moments later.
His Transformation Magic is greatly limited, and so far he has only been able to turn into the elderly (old men and old women), which is generally not very helpful to him.
Other: Kouji knows the location of only one of the Mirror Shards.
Name: Yurihime “Lily” Shiroirenge
Age: 15 (almost 16)
Gender: Female
Race: Human
Appearance: Lily’s got the whole ‘pretty-girl-look’ down-pat. Now if she can just work up to the next level. She has shoulder-length, light brown hair, all of which, save for her bangs, is pulled back in a bun. Her bangs are swept to the side by a barrette (sometimes switched with a lotus flower, depending on her mood). Her eyes are a beautiful blue color, and her skin is milky white. Lily’s nose is small and cute-looking. Her rosy lips are found attractive by most and highly coveted by many of the other young women in Sekai-hana.
Lily has a slender frame, but it is slowly beginning to mature and grow more hourglass-like. She wears a long-sleeved, tight-fitting, light green kimono-style top that complements her slowly-curving figure and fair-sized bust rather well. Her silk-white skirt hugs her hips about an inch below her bellybutton, and flows down her milky legs, ending just above her knees. It has a split down the left side for more efficient mobility. She ties a pink-colored sash around her waist. A pair of sandals embraces her petite feet.
Personality: Lily is a compassionate girl who packs a punch. She cares deeply for her people, and will do anything to put a stop to Yashasuke's diabolical plans. She has a feisty temper, "pretty much exactly like Lady Amaterasu," says Kouji. Her stubbornness and intelligence make her a formidable opponent for nearly anyone. Her judgment in battle is very good, much better than Kouji's, but at times can be clouded by her unrelenting attitude. Once stuck on an idea, she won't let go of it until she has an idea that is even better. She believes that the only way to resolve this conflict is to go back to Sekai-hana and face Yashasuke, using violence if necessary. But to do this, she first needs a group of followers that are willing to risk their lives for her cause.
She can be both cunning and manipulative when seeking allies. Sometimes using threats may strike her as the only way to get someone to join her. Other times, she considers it best to utilize her feminine charms to persuade people to join her side. Lily has also been known to use means of exchange or payment to recruit allies. She is much like her deceased father was on that note.
History: Yurihime Shiroirenge, the crown-princess of Ashihara, was most definitely 'daddy's little girl'. Her father taught her everything about being a ruler, and bossy little Yurihime had a very quick mind. She learned fast, and studied hard under her many tutors. Eventually, however, as she grew older, she decided enough was enough, and went out into the city for some fun. Lily didn't realize this then, but it was by the grace of the Kami that she was out of the palace on that day, for that was when Yashasuke, the king's right-hand man, turned on the king and killed him.
As it turned out, nearly all of the king's guards were in on the overtaking of the thrown, and slayed anyone that stood against them. It wasn't long after that Lily learned of her father's death, from Yashasuke himself. The devil-of-a-man sent his loyal soldiers out to find her, and that's when Lily's story began. They took her to Yashasuke, where the whole story was laid out for her. When he finished, he pulled out a long and terrible blade, said to be forged in the Underworld itself, and prepared to run her through. At the last second, the only surviving guard loyal to the king leaped in the way, shielding the princess from the fatal blow.
Enraged, Yashasuke tore the soldier to shreds in a matter of swipes, and turned back to Lily, but she was gone. The princess dove out of the palace window and landed on one of the palace's lower roofs. Hopping from roof to roof, she made her escape, not daring to look back, for fear that one look could mean her death.
For a year, she remained in hiding, but constantly on the move, fearing that Yashasuke would find her before she was ready for him. Her travels brought her to Akimura, the Village of Eternal Fall, where she sought the help of some wayward warriors. Whatever it takes, she is determined reclaim her throne.
Fighting Style and Weapons: Lily is a swordswoman, and excellent at utilizing almost any kind of blade. Her favor lies with the katana, namely ones with long blades. She uses quick dashes to end her foes within seconds with the razor-sharpness of her blade. At the moment, she carries a simple katana.
Later on, Lily will obtain two katana, but will only use one of them at a time, for they are too different to be used together. The swords were made by two famed sword-smiths (Muramasa and Masamune).
The first sword was made by Masamune and is called Yawarakai-Te (Tender Hands). Its blade is silver, and it is more adept in reflecting magical energy than actually cutting. It is a more peace-oriented sword.
The second sword was made by Muramasa and is called Juuchi Yosamu (10,000 Cold Nights). Its blade is black, and it is sharp beyond compare. It radiates with demonic energies.
Special skills/techniques/magic: Lily has no magic powers other than those infused into the blades of her swords.
Other: When wielding her demon blade for too long, Lily's eyes begin to turn red, and she starts losing control, eventually becoming slave to the sword's bloodlust.
