Tariza: Land of Forgotten Dreams (PG-13)

Yup. I finally worked up enough courage to show a fic I’ve been writing. This is technically my first, so I expect some helpful crits. I’ve had this idea in my mind for a long time, it just took me a while to write it. This is an ORIGINAL idea, so it’s not really a fan fic.
PG-13 for some blood, violence, and some scary stuff.
And all characters and places belong to ME. In fact, the only thing I don’t own is the place two of the characters live in, which is Tokyo.

Tariza: Land of Forgotten Dreams
Chapter 1: A Dream Come True

It was a cold, winter night. The moon and stars were hidden behind a cloak of clouds. As small snow flakes fell to the earth, a shaft of moonlight broke through it’s cover and shone on a large house. It looked inviting, with a warm light glowing from inside. But, something hung in the air…something odd.

From the inside of the house, a young girl was staring outside through a window, curled up on a couch. She was brushing her long, brown hair, but seemed to be interested in the snow than her appearance. The white nightgown she was wearing made her look like a ghost, since she was slightly pale, and her chocolate eyes had a lost look in them. She sighed and closed the blinds.

“Hot chocolate, Sakiko?” The girl, Sakiko, turned to look at the speaker. It was another girl, about two years older than her. She had long, black hair tied in a braid, and her midnight blue pajamas seemed to go along with her deep, sapphire eyes. She held a warm mug filled with hot chocolate. “I even put marshmallows in it.”

Sakiko smiled weakly. “Thank you, Sayuri. You know exactly what I like.”

“Well, of course. I am your older sister.” Sayuri handed her sister the mug and sat down next to her. “But I can’t give you everything…” She added, glancing at a picture on the wall. It was a picture of three people. Two were adults, one being a kind-looking woman, the other a stern but loving man. And the third was a young red head girl, with a look of confidence in her eyes.

“Yeah…” Sakiko stared at the marshmallows floating in her mug. “It’s been five years, hasn’t it? I was only eight when…it happened.” She sniffed and wiped a tear from her eye. “I still remember what happened, and it still hurts.”

Sayuri hugged her younger sister. “But our aunt was happy to take us in, and you have that special place, right?” The ‘special place’ she was referring to was a small library behind a bookcase in Sakiko’s bedroom. Only she and Sakiko could go in there. “You always go in there when you have a bad day and you want to burst into tears.”

Sakiko nodded and stood up. “I think I’ll go in there now. Thanks for the hot chocolate.” She handed Sayuri the mug and walked to her room. There wasn’t much to see, but she had a king sized bed, a desk, a TV, several video gaming stations, and the bookcase. She pushed the bookcase to the side, revealing a hidden door. “It’s a good thing that only my sis and I know about this.” She muttered, taking out a key and unlocking the door.

The door creaked eerily, sending shivers up Sakiko’s spine. But she stepped inside the library and turned on a lamp. It was a cozy room, with the walls filled with old and new books. There was a small, circular couch in the middle of the room that she fell on. She breathed in the musty, peppermint smell and turned onto her back.

“I wonder what will happen in Tariza tonight…” She mused. Tariza was a special world she had created with her sisters. It was two planets considered as one: One was filled with life and hope, the other was dark and infested with demons. But the beings of the light side learned to co-exist with the demons. And it is protected by several goddesses, one being the ‘true’ creator of Tariza: Sari. But, although the world was created by her, Sakiko knows little about the history of it. But she does know of one special person living in Tariza: A cat girl who goes by the name of Sarisa. Sarisa was her guardian angel.

Suddenly, the silence was broken when an object fell to the floor. Sakiko, being a believer of ghosts, quickly got up to investigate. She picked up an old sketchbook, its pages yellowed with age.

“What’s this? I didn’t see this on the shelves before…” She said, sitting down and carefully opening the relic. “It’s so old….I’m surprised it didn’t crumble under my touch! Hey, what’s this?” She was flipping through the book when she stopped on a strange picture. It looked like a shrine, but it was made of crystal. It even had a strange pool of liquid inside.

Near the picture was a small paragraph of strange words. To the normal human eye, it would appear as strange lettering, and no one would understand it. But, somehow, Sakiko could read every word of it. It didn’t make any sense to her, though.

“From the portal of imagination, the demon of nightmares shall awaken, when the creator’s dream comes true.” She read. Her eyelids drooped as she read it again. “From the portal of imagination, the demon of nightmares shall awaken, when the creator’s dream comes true.” The sketchbook fell from her hands as she drifted off into slumber land.

When Sakiko opened her eyes, she gasped in surprise. She was floating above a small village that was near a large body of water, probably an ocean. She couldn’t see much, but the roofs of the houses were giant, colorful seashells. Some were pointed with swirls, some had seaweed clinging onto the roofs. Sakiko could see people fishing, doing work in their yards, or playing.

She stared at the town. “Can it be? Am I?…” She glanced up at the sky. But instead of the sapphire skies back home, she saw another land. It looked cold and grim, with several dead trees scattered here and there on its surface. She even thought she saw a werewolf wandering around.

Sakiko stared at the sky, then pinched herself. “…It’s true.” She muttered, then she grinned form ear to ear. “It’s really true! I’m in Tariza! My dream has come true!”

Comments? Crits? Or Cookies and Cream Ice Cream?

Yay! First post! >=3
It was good, Sarisa. I don't really know why this is your first fan-fic on SPPF; you seem like an author who's been writing for a while. ^^
It was really detailed and easy to understand and it had no major mistakes that messed up the flow of the story. (In fact, I don't really think there were any mistakes at all.) Looking forward to the next chapter of this! ;D

Loved it. The plot is really straightforward and is easy to get into. I won't go into much detail here, but I know how you got this idea. ^_~

Thank all of you kindly for your response. Although I'm not sure what you mean, Celebi, when you said you know how I got my idea.

Anywho, it's time for the next chapter! AWAY! *fwoosh*

Tariza: Land of Forgotten Dreams
Chapter Two: The Name’s Sarisa!

Sakiko was speechless as she floated down into the town beneath her. The seashell houses were very colorful, and very large compared to some of the houses back in Tokyo. People were fishing, working, and selling their wares to others. And there were strange beings there: warriors with blazing wings, sly looking thieves with fox tails, people wearing big fur coats with wolf ears. The entire town was filled with life as kids played on cobblestone streets and a small band of musicians played a tune.

“This place is amazing…” Sakiko said as she wandered around. She spotted a young man chopping some fire wood in his front yard near a well. His brown hair was short and straight, like some the heroes in the shows Sakiko watches all of the time. His red shirt was moist with sweat, and his tan skin had small beads of water trickling down. After a while, he set down his ax, sighed, and wiped his hands on his blue pants.

The girl ran up to him, hoping to figure out why she was here. “Um, excuse me…” She said, but the man didn’t hear her. “I said, excuse me.” She stated, sounding a bit annoyed. “Why won’t you answer me?” She tried to place her hand on his shoulder, but it passed straight through him.

Sakiko gasped and fell down. “I’m…not really here. It IS a dream?” She whispered, feeling very disappointed. She wanted to be in Tariza for a very long time.

“Hey Lalibo!” Sakiko turned as she heard a voice. The speaker was a young girl, around her age. She had long, flowing blond hair and friendly, green eyes. She must have been a mage of some kind, since she was wearing a long robe that fit her angelic appearance. “It seems you have been working hard.”

“You could say that, Minoko.” Lalibo said, scratching the back of his head. His face glowed a rosy pink as he spoke with the girl. Sakiko guessed that he liked her.

Minoko giggled, then looked around. “Have you seen Miss Trouble-Maker lately? I’ve haven’t seen her all day.” After seeing Lalibo’s blank look on his face, she added, “You know, Sari-”

“OUTTA MY WAY!” A voice yelled from down the street. A dust cloud could be seen several yards away. Running in front of it was a teen, around 15 years old. As she got closer, Sakiko blinked in surprise. The girl had long, red-orange hair tied in a ponytail and bright, ruby red eyes. Her black vest trimmed with gold and her white, long sleeved shirt was covered with dust and dirt, as were her tan pants. A huge, two handed broadsword was buckled onto her back, but what stood out the most was her light blue cat ears and long tail, with a small gold earring on one ear, and two rings and white fluff at the end of her tail.

The cat girl jumped on top of a large pile of logs, only to slip and cause the logs to tumble down. “Whoop, whoop, whoop, woo-hoo!” She squealed, trying to regain her footing on top of the rolling logs. Instead, she came tumbling down with them.

“Sarisa! Are you okay?” Minoko immediately ran to the girl’s side. “What’s going on?”

Sarisa looked around dizzily, then quickly regained her composure. “Well…” She said, wiping dirt of her face, revealing a red triangle on each cheek. “Some guys tried to get me to go with them.” She glanced down the road. “And here they come now.”

Three thugs came running up to the small group. All three of them looked the same, with the same pirate garb and headgear. One carried a club and had a big scar on his face.

“Tryin’ to run away, Toots?” He said, grinning a wicked grin, complete with rotted teeth. “Sorry, but no one escapes from the Spike Heads! Your abilities will be ours!” He looked at Lalibo and Minoko. “N’ while we’re at it, you two will come along! You never know when we’ll need some more goons to do my dirty work.”

Minoko was offended at this remark and shot at the leader, “Lalibo and I will never work for creeps like you! So, leave this peaceful town of Kinkai!”

The leader and his gang snickered at this. “Oh, you’re a tough one! How’s about you n’ me going out sometime?” The leader said, only to be struck in the jaw by Lalibo. “Blimey!” He spat out a tooth, growled, and started to swing his club around like a wild man. “I’ll teach you to mess with me!”

Lalibo took up a defensive stance. “I don’t care what you do to me, just keep away from Minoko!” He stated. He was really nervous on the inside, but he wasn’t going to let anyone notice.

Sakiko was dumbstruck as she watched the entire scene in front of her. A flicker of movement caught her eye, and she saw one of the thugs sneaking up behind Lalibo, holding a small knife. “Look out!” She yelled, even though she knew she couldn’t be heard.

Right when the thug raised his knife, a large blade came crashing down on his head, knocking him out. Sarisa lifted her sword easily with one hand and glared at the leader, a look of anger in her eyes. “ I suggest you back off, now.” She said calmly. “And another thing, my name isn’t ‘Toots’, it’s Sarisa!” She swung the sword out on front of her and pointed the blade towards the leader.

“Oh yea? We’ll see about that.” The leader sneered as he and his other crony circled the cat girl. “It looks like we’ll have to force you to join us!” They both charged towards her, weapons drawn.

“Oh please…” She scoffed, “Give me a break!” She ducked and slid out of the way as the two crashed into each other. “You’re just some regular bandits. I can handle you easily.” She picked up the crony by the collar and threw him on top of his fallen comrade.

“GRRRRAAAH!” The leader yelled as he charged like a bull seeing red. Sarisa once again ducked, but tripped the frenzied bandit when he came near. She then picked him up roughly and twisted his arm back until he started to scream, “Uncle! Uncle! Okay, you win!”

Sarisa dropped the defeated bandit and kicked at him. “You and your goons have until the count of three to get out of here and never come here again. If you’re still here, or if I see your ugly mugs in the place again, my blade will have to be cleaned.” She closed her eyes. “One! Two!” She opened one eye. The gang was already gone.

“You showed them who was boss, Sarisa!” Minoko squealed, hugging her childhood friend tightly. “Who knew you could be so tough?” Sarisa pretended to choke for air, hinting that her friend was hugging her too tightly.

“You did a good job, but I want to know…” Lalibo muttered. “Did you use your powers again?”

“Yeah, well…” the cat girl said, planting her sword into the ground. “They were stealing from a shop. I couldn’t just stand by and let that happen. So I had some ice fall down their backs and dump some water on their heads. I didn’t expect them to notice me doing that.” She sighed. “Aw well…At least we won’t see their ugly faces again!”

Sakiko watched happily as the group burst out laughing. She was glad that Sarisa was still a carefree soul. She didn’t want Sarisa to become a weapon for war. After all, she was Sarisa’s creator, and she made sure no one will use her for her gift: the powers over water and ice. “Oh, Sarisa…” she said. “You can always lift a person’s spirit. If only you were real…”

That’s when it happened.

A portal appeared right below Sarisa, and two bony hands rose up from it and grabbed her ankles.

“Eh? What the?” Sarisa tried to break free, but the hands had firm grip and started to drag her into the portal. Sakiko only stood and watched in horror as the cat girl struggled to free herself.

“Sarisa!” Lalibo grabbed Sarisa’s hand. “What in all of Tariza is going on?!” He suddenly lost his grip, and Sarisa was plunged into the strange portal. “Oh no!”

Sarisa struggled and called out, but no one could help. Before she lost consciousness, she heard a hoarse voice call out, “You have been summoned!”

I think I failed the bandit speak. Anyway, review away!

Very nice. Who knew that you could be such a talented writer? You could easily put my fanfic to shame, that is, if I can ever get it on here. Good job!

Yay! Once again, a very good read, Sarisa. ^^
Great detail, nice length, plus it was really fun to read and easy to get into. I'm still wondering what will happen to Sarisa now that she's gone through that portal... well, looking forward to the next chapter! It was a very good read indeed. =3

I've read the first two chapters. I kinda like it, but let's not get into that now. Helpful critisism can improve one's writing.

The storyline, for what it is so far, is bad. Don't get me wrong, I do like the whole concept of Tariza, etc. But there's a problem with it: you can't just make magic come out of nowhere without a source (that being my personal opinion). Not even C.S. Lewis did that with Narnia! But, hey. It might be a dream or something. This can be explained in the third chapter (preferrably).

So far, the characters are good except for the cat person. She seems invincible. At least make it to where she had a little trouble fighting the bandits, like one of them pegged her in the back and then she fell for a moment or something!

And you're going a little overboard on the description. Don't get me wrong, it's good, but you can spread it throughout the paragraphs a little. Once again, my personal opinion.

Finally, the names. I know the names have to sound a little Japanese, but still. What I do to think up names is take a name that sounds cool (like Aslan from Narnia) and divide it into a format of vowels and consenants (Aslan=Vccvc) then fill in the blanks (Aslan=Vccvc=Obrig or something else). But, hey. That's just me that doesn't like the names.\

Otherwise, good.

EDIT: It's a little fast paced. Usually, the first chapter in a story is just a long explanation about the characters, or a really long chapter (which this wasn't) where, at the very end, the plot is started.
