TCM's Miyazaki May week two: "Princess Mononoke" and "My Neighbor Totoro"

Wolf Goddess

~Lupo Di Autunno~
Okay, since apparently only Hellkorn and I watched Castle in the Sky and Porco Rosso last week, I decided to make this one early. These are airing this Friday. (Well, technically Saturday morning, but...yeah.)

Inflicted with a deadly curse, a young warrior named Ashitaka sets out for the forests of the west in search of the cure that will save his life. Once there, he becomes inextricably entangled in a bitter battle that matches Lady Eboshi and a proud clan of humans against the forest's animal gods, who are led by the brave Princess Mononoke, a young woman raised by wolves.

Air time: 2:00 a.m. EST/11:00 a.m. PST

Follow the adventures of Satsuki and her 4-year-old sister Mei when they move into a new home in the countryside. To their delight, they discover that their new neighbor is a mysterious forest spirit called Totoro -- who can be seen only through the eyes of a child. Totoro introduces them to extraordinary characters-including a cat that doubles as a bus!-and takes them on an incredible journey.

Air time: 4:15 a.m. EST/1:15 a.m. PST

COME ON, PEOPLE. IT'S CALLED A VCR.

Please don't tell me that it was just me and Wolf Goddess again. I'm not a Miyazaki mark like a some are, but I can at least appreciate his movies. Is there no respect left on this forum?

Ah well... my disappointment aside, I rather enjoyed watching Princess Monoke again after a while. Personally my favorite of Miyazaki's work, and one of his more mature (intelluctually speaking) pieces as well. It's also nice to not have the 'protect the environment' message that was somehow worked in the Disney dub. >_O

And I do have to give credit to My Neighbor Totoro... I'm fifteen years old, watch/read series like Berserk, Hellsing, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Gungrave, and Koroshiya Ichi and I can still be amused by this in a good way. Maybe the child in me ain't dead yet.

... Really, though, did anyone else watch these? Don't make me create a thread on how anime fans of today lack respect and are becoming complete snobs, people (and there is truth there).

Well, I had missed Castle in the Sky, but I did catch Porco Rosso (arguably my favorite of Miyazaki's), which was great to see once again (even better if it aired on Toonami, but beggars can't be choosers). Ah, but I digress...

Princess Mononoke isn't my favorite Miyazaki movie, but awesome nevertheless (not to mention vicious at times...even after watching the likes of Cowboy Bebop and Fullmetal Alchemist, it still made my stomach churn, lol). The action sequences remain as intense as ever. However, there are still hints of comedy relief in several characters to prevent the film from being TOO dark.

This was the first time I saw Totoro actually as I missed it when it aired on TCM months ago. Simply put: I enjoyed it. At first glance, I imagined it to be for the younger audience, but it worked for a much broader audience. I need movies like that to take a break from the deeply philosophical meanings and seriousness from other series.

Well, either the people have seen the Miyazaki movies enough via Toonami, TCM, and DVDs, they have already replied to previous Miyazaki threads, or maybe they truly are ignorant. Heh, I can't be the judge in this situation. As for me, I just wasn't online long enough to notice the thread, lol.

This is Turner Classic, which always shows movies unedited, so it wouldn't have an effect on these airings.

I can believe that I didn't post my thoughts on the movies...

Princess Mononoke is one of my favorites. It was great seeing the Japanese version, as I think the voices had more emotion. It has some intense action scenes and is well-paced, and it was certainly deep.

Ah, My Neighbor Totoro. While it's probably my least favorite Miyazaki film, it was still good. A fun adventure, and cute little magical creatures.
