Well, the flier I'm using in my team is Togekiss because of the moves it learns (Aura Sphere & Extremespeed) but if I wasn't using him, I'd go for Noctowl or Xatu.

I'll probably be doing what I did in my Japanese Soul Silver. That is, use a few catchable Pokemon in-game to take down the Johto side of things, then construct a team using Safari Zone 'mons for Kanto. Of course, I've never been the best at sticking to plans, so who knows?

Magneto the Magneton (as in, Magneto from X-men)
Erbaliser the Meganium (random Jamaican slang)
Mole the Dunsparce (as in the machine, a.k.a. The Mole from Thunderbirds)
YanUber the Yanmega (obvious, though actually with this logic Meganium should be Ubernium...but it isn't)
Prizna the Magmar (obscure reference to an old skool Jungle song 'Fire' by Prizna and Demolition Man)
Irwin the Mantine (Steve Irwin, doii)
Three of the first four are from the list of my personal favourites. Meganium is Grass and is therefore awesome and is the most underappreciated of all the starters, Magmar looks crazy cool and I have never really used it bar 1st gen, and Mantine is a motherfunkin stingray which needs more usage.
