If you have an E-Reader and the right card, you can fight people there.

The E-Reader cards where only made in Japan.

WRONG!
If you bought Ruby or Saphire when it was released it came with an e-battle card.
Ruby got gentleman Niles and saphire got some lady.
These cards work for american versions when you use the e-reader.
There is however no point to these cards because you gain no experience from them and If i remember correctly you don't even get money from the battle. It's just a 3 vs 3 battle with some rather weak pokemon.

Really? Because Ru/Sa was released in March 03, and I got my Ruby in Februrary 04, but it still came with an E-Card. I was wondering what that was......at least now I know.

Some of the later ones do still include them. that's all that card is for.
And of course no e-cards were made for fire red/leaf green, e-reader functionality was completely removed from all but the japanese versions of those.
