Really, it's just that so many of the fans have called them by that name that people have gotten accustomed to that, and think it's official.

Show me an official screenshot where they are called that. It's just a name the majority of fans are extremely attached to, and defensive of.

I always have and always will think of them as the legendary beasts. I believe they are just a trio of carnivores, and they can be portrayed as whatever you imagine. I can't say cats, because suicune doesn't look like a cat to me, but I can't call them canines, because raikou's pretty obviously a tiger.

Oh come on peeps.The japanese Gold/Silver guide called them cats so im sticking with the true guide.The england/american version says their dogs cuz they cant tell what's dog and whats not.Jaguars can swim and so can Tigers if your thinking "Suicune cant be a cat cuz she's a water type"

Raikou: Im sticking to the Raijuu idea for obvious reasons.A legendary japanese creature said to take the forme of a lightning Tiger.Otherwise Raikou is a Sabre tooth cat
Entei: Im pretty much sure that Entei's a male Lion.I cant see him resembling anything else apart from a bear/lion hybrid.
Suicune: She can swim=Jaguar or Tiger,she can use moves like Blizzard and ice beam maybe making her more of a Snow Leopard but apart from the long Wolf like face she does not resemble any dog.
Thats all.

Suicune is a UNICORN & a CHEETAH...& if u ask why it's a unicorn,well...becuz it has the head similar to a horse's head & it can purify water & the fact that it has the crystal thing makes it a pure creature...well...u know what I mean...my English is limited

Raikou is a SABRE TOOTH TIGRE

Beasts, half dogs half cats? to call them cats does´t fit and to call them dogs seems strange when you look at them especially Entei. so i just call them Beasts.

Most people call them dogs because they say the games call them like that.
But they look more like lions or giant cats, however beast would fit in best for them.
not that I doubt Nintendo's decision to call them dogs or something..., but they don't even look like dogs.

They are most often referred to as either legendary beasts or legendary dogs.

But, they look like cats to me. As stated, Suicune has the speed and appearance of a cheetah or some other kind of agile feline, Entei resembles a lion, and Raikou looks like either a sabertooth or a tiger.

While I agree that "dog" isn't the best description of them, it's what I'm most likely to call them. In my mind it's not so much about the species as it is about the impression I get. And the impression I get from "dog" is a bigger, more fearsome creature than a cat. Entei is the closest example, but the other two still count in that category.

To me, a cat is a cat, a lion is a lion, a tiger is a tiger and a cheetah is a cheetah. They may all be of the same genus (feline) but they're different species. I'm not inclined to call them cats, because that doesn't conjure up the same image in my mind - it conjures up my pet cat, which although it can be quite vicious when I'm trying to shoo it out of my room, doesn't have quite the same impact.

I suppose the best term is "beast", although this could easily refer to anything. I'd rather have a better term than that, one that would refer to just those three pokémon, but I simply can't think of one.

To be honest, legendary beasts sounds like the most fitting name. While Raikou and Entei are certainly cats (tiger and lion), Suicune has the semblance of a wolf or another canine animal.

I think that they are more of dogs. That is because they're aggressive, walk on 4 legs, and have a long stamina. Cats aren't really aggressive though.

Yeah cats is dumb (OMG I got mauled by a cat!) but officially they're the legendary beasts, neither cats nor dogs.
