The Age of Truth: An Alchemical Clockpunk RPG- SignUp

DVB

Philosopher Knight
"The year is 1650. The 30-Year-War has reached its end and new lands have emerged from it. This war was fought not just with soldiers, but with automata. For decades ago, the miracles of alchemy were discovered and from it, several new developments occurred. Greater and more exotic metals. Elixirs. The discovery of new elements. During this rise of science, technology also went to do so. With new metals, new devices of clockwork could be made. It was much easier to make large devices that can withstand the pressures. The Age of Enlightenment has begun and its a bold new world.

The strongest power would be the Catholic League. Led by the powerful and influential Habsburg family, they are the foremost champions of the Catholic Church. The royal family is centered in the Kingdom of Spain, where the Inquisition serves as a secondary peace-keeping force and to ensure the dominance of Catholicism and heathens are either hunted or forcibly converted via psychological torment. Filled to the brim with gold, silver and valuable gems, they view alchemy as a gift from God and thus only the most loyal are permitted to learn its secrets. However, Spain has few alchemical schools, preferring to leave their allies in charge of that side of education, especially Haemus. Their viceroyalities help ensure control over the lands and the ones who lead the war against their eternal enemy, the Ottomans.

The steadfast alley of the Habsburgs is the Holy Roman Empire. Having expanded and become enormously strong, they are the heartland of alchemy. In the Papal States, the Pope remains and commands the peaceful side of Catholicism, but still speaks against other branches and stands with the Holy Roman Emperor, The King of Spain and the other nobles. Furthermore, the Papal States serve as one of the most influential areas in the field of alchemy. The greatest alchemists are taught here in order to provide more insight for the quality of life, the secrets of God and the search for the Philsopher's Stone, or as the Church insists on calling it, the Angelicall Stone. Believed to be the pinnacle of miracles, it is the ultimate gift of God to the humble mortals and the Church hopes that its creation will allow them to crush their enemies. Beyond the Papal States, the Kingdom of Austria and the Kingdom of Germania are powerful states in the Empire as well. Germania serves to fend off their enemies to the north and Austria to their enemies to the east.

Standing against the potential dominance of Catholics in all of Europe is the alliance of the British and French. These long-time foes have decided to put aside theri differences and stand together against this new threat. Combining the land forces of France and the naval forces of England, they stand strong. Several protestant alchemists fleeing to France has also bolstered their ranks considerably. The forces of France's King stands strong thanks to these refugees. The British have also benefitted from alchemical gifts as they are applying them to their naval forces. Both countries retain a Protestant-domninant population. Their other main ally is the Dutch Republic. Done to prevent the lands from falling to control of the Spanish, they heped unify them into one single domain. Despite their size, they are a strong force and serve as the main communications between them and the Nordic Union.

The Nordic Union is a very powerful unity between Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland among other nations. They stand united although some nations, namely Finland, are somewhat more indepedent in doing their own matters. They are prosperous and doing well for themselves, a result of remaining out of the War. No one knows their reasons for doing so, but rumors have mentioned of Finnish ships headed westward with numerous supplies. They are less developed in alchemy than the other kingdoms, but they have formed connections with the Dutch to recieve some benefits as well as the occasional British or French alchemist.

Beyond them, the other neutral parties of influence are the Kingdom of Bohemia and the Polish Commonwealth. The Kingdom of Bohemia broke off despite the connection to the Habsburg and serves as a mercantile center of sorts. They are content with being business affiliates, but nothing more. They are close allies to the Poles for the sake of protection. The Polish Commonwealth is perhaps the only other nation who culd match the might of the Habsburgs. Being the most liberal and tolerant of the nations, they have benefited from having a diverse multitude of people from the Ottoman Empire, the Habsburg Viceroyalities, the Holy Roman Empire and from the alliance. This had led to a boon in the studying of alchemy and in clockwork creations. They get into conflicts woth some minor nobles of Rome due to some of their people taking it upon themselves to free slaves from the lands.

The Ottoman Empire is still ruled by the Sultans and the Caliphs and have taken to practicing their own form of alchemy. The eternal enemies of the Habsburgs, they will ally with nearly anyone to ensure their defeat, barring Persia and a few other nations. They are fairly neutral otherwise, but rely on their allies that lay under Spain to fight the Habsburg at home while they fight against the Holy Roman Empire, with Hellas being the focal point for the conflict.

Technology is strong as proto-factories are being built with clockwork. Automated carts have been useful and the many inventions of the famous Leonardo Da Vinci are being slowly being produced on grander scales as bolder and younger inventors take time to make the inventions more practical or look for new discoveries to make them useful. Automatons are more commonplace as either simple servants or entertainment purpose such as musicians and new sources of fuel are being searched. Windmills and watermills are seen to work with clockwork to better produce materials. Health and medicine has also advanced with new elements and growing ever closer to the panacea. Private bathing areas are being installed in himes and cleanliness has been championed by the Church to maintain the physical and spiritual health and purity of their followers. The first soaps have also been made and life expectancy has increased nicely. The newest subject has been artificial limb when the legendary "Iron Hand" of Gotz Von Berlichingen was discovered and studied by endless clockwork mechanics. Several notes were made from the ruin of the clockwork miracle and they have been managing to make better versions, but they are still available only to the nobles and the best warriors. Mechainisms and proto-computers like the Antikythera device are commonly seen on ships and some ships are even being powered by clockwork, but fuel remains a large issue, with some attempting to harvest wind or tide power.

Alchemy... the science of miracles. The lovechild of science and magic... it was a grand and noble pursuit, but now an occult precursor to chemistry and a footnote of history. But what if it wasn't? What if the miracles that were promised came true? And so with alchemy and with other advancements came the insights for a different future. This is an Earth, much like our own yet so very different. On the continent of Europa, it is wherenour story takes place. It is the Age of Enlightenment and alchemy has created advancements in everyday life. Only the finest of minds get to read the texts and learn about the transmutation of metals and the creation of elixirs or higher and purer metals.

Alchemy also changed and developed over time. With greater and purer glass and more complex telescopes created, three new worlds were discovered and named Uranus, Neptune and Pluton. Furthermore, new metals were discovered such as the light and strong aluminum from the salts, the mighty titanium or the durable wolfram (sometimes referred to as tungsten, based off the ore it came from). New noble elements were discovered, like hydrogen, believed to be a physical gaseuous form of aether. With new knowledge came udnerstanding and new technology. When a clockwork navigation device was recovered near the island Antikythera, kept in good condition due it being trapped in a box. it ushered a new age of clockmakers as the intricate designs and master craftsmanship inspired them to do more. Stronger and greater materials were available thanks to alchemy, which led to the creation of new clockwork devices.

Automata were being made and water and wind mills became more efficient. Furthermore, clockwork devices were being made all around. From small little devices to large gear-filled structures. Kingdoms were being built as more and more knowledge was being unlocked and wars were fought, with alchemy even being used to slowly create new weapons. Yet, the pursuit remains the same. The search for the Philosophers' Stone. Only a few have ever been made, and they are guarded by the Royal Alchemist of each empire. Hermits and secret-keepers, they keep the secrets to themselves. Some even claim they are not true philosopher stones, but simply replicas.

This relative peace is now threatened with the potential for a massive war when a falling star lands somewhere in Muscovy. Causing widespread destruction, there has been reports of irregular life activity and a sense of awe and power. Every faction has gotten interest, especially with sites indirectly affected by the crash have been reported to be filled with rich deposits of gold, silver and other precious metals while exotic plants have been reportedly seen growing. What is this miracle, no one knows, but everyone, even the secluded and isolated Swiss are deeply interested.

Whatever you think lies there is something mysterious when alchemical experiments began going haywire, icnreasing the rumors of something mysterious going on there. Rumors that forests of ice have grown and so on made matters even more curious.

What are you in this era? A warrior, an alchemist, a tinkerer, an engineer, a thief, a bowman, a knight, a doctor, a farmer, a merchant? Whatever you choose to be, what draws you over there in the distance to seek out the Truth of the Fallen Star?

Who will you ally against or with whom?

And can anyone truly prepare for what it may lie ahead?

Hey everyone, I got a new RP. Sign up is still in the works, but make a reserve if you're interested!

Behold, the map. I will make edits to make things better over time, but for now, enjoy!

the_age_of_truth_by_void_wolf-d8ovs8r.png

Now, the time place would be about the 1650s although maybe 19th century regarding technology. Alot of clockpunk here and some references to you history buffs. Now, you can be anything from an alchemst, to a tinkerer (those working with small clockwork devices) to an engineer (the large clockwork devices, all you wrench wenches sign up XDD ). There are also your more traidtional and mundane jobs like doctors, bakers, warriors, archers, gunman, hunters and so on.

Alchemy is a pretty subtle magic here. You won't see anything massive scale due to the scarcity of the Philosopher's Stone. Still, we have improved metals, glasses and materials as well as perfected elixirs and so on. You might be able to have a sword that can be set on fire, explosive arrows or possible things, but it requires some clever thinking and justifying. While the traditional alchemy exists, hints of others like Chinese and so on may appear later. Furthermore, the discoveries of new elements and so on have expanded on it so there is more that can be done. For now though, it's gonna focused on traveling, fighting and all that fun stuff.

Though once a Stone is made though... things get interesting...

We'll start out seperate or rather in mini-groups though we may all become one big group eventually, so keep that in mind.

So are the Hapsburgs the Holy Roman Emperors again? Normans? Did the Prussians take Normandy from France?

I'm having some difficulty picturing the state of continental Europe right now.

It's a WIP signup hence why i didn't tell you (that and work is sapping my time and energy)

Doesn't the Holy Roman Empire ... still exist then?

I mean yeah it's been wrecked thanks to the 30 Year's War, but when you said that the Hapsburgs helped reform it, I was expecting something post-Napoleon.

Alternate history happened due to the rise of advanced clockwork and alchemy. I'll have a map of the area probably by tomorrow (12 hour shift today at work)

To help kick things off, my own sign-up, a WIP.

Name: Diego de la Vega
Age: 21
Gender: Male

Land of Origin: Spain

Appearance: Diego stood at what would be considered five feet and nine inches and weighed about 150 pounds. He is also built with a rather stocky frame, a potential result of having warriors on both sides of the family. Despite that, he isn't that in shape and some would consider mildly plump. His skin color is nowhere near as dark as his brother and at first glance, he could be considered a mildly tanned Spainard, but exposure to sun does make him stick out more. He is nowhere near as tan as his younger brother or his father however. He possessed warm brown eyes that portrayed the kind soul within and had some dark brown almost black hair he would keep cut every now and then. It was rather fine compared to the thick curlier hair of his brother. Besides that, he has a somewhat round and boyish face, indicating a youthful presence.

Personality:Diego is a warm and emotional person with an occasion fiery temper and an adventurous spirit. He is very empathetic and has a great desire to help people out. Beneath this outgoing facade, Diego is a shy and quiet person. He is also a very artistic individual as he will often draw whenever he gets the chance to do so. He is very loyal, but can come on as clingy, especially around girls. He also likes to cook. When in serious situations, he knows it is time for him to use his intelligence and strengths at their full capacity. He is very creative and known to be devious for his ideas. He is regarded as being very smart in many aspects. Highly intelligent, he has gathered a wide variety of knowledge, from the practical to the esoteric, to the common to the obscure and the normal to the strange.

He has his faults, however. Some of these are being blunt, sarcastic, laziness and often day-dreaming during certain moments and saying a weird comment afterward. Beyond that, he also has moments of self-righteousness, showing frustrated toward some of the less-than-savory characters, but holds his tongue when he needs to. He is prone to snarky or blunt comments and is often unable to figure out what to do in situations with people so will often mess things up, though he means no harm. More so, he seems to have a dark side, appearing only in his nightmares. Despite this or because of it, he tries to overcome these traits to become a better person.

History Diego de la Vega was something of a minor noble. One of the last descendants of El Cid, he carried the blood from his mother's side. However, he was also looked down for being a child of a Mixteca mestizo from his father's side. While people from the New World were not uncommon, it was still pretty rare since Spain's exploration into the New World relatively small, the royalty perferring to utilize their alchemists to create gold and other materials than spend time on the other lands. Despite this, he grew up in a loving home and in relative comfort. While his mom was devoted to the church, she did not let it rule her eyes or let it color her vision toward her husband or her children. This allowed Diego to live in relative stability in the Kingdom of Spain. While his mother dedicated her life as a houswife, his father was a successful merchant. Despite being looked down for his background, he was very intelligent and a diligent taskmaster, being very efficient, like the pristine clock of a maste builder. He was openly affectionate with his sons and did his best to steer them on the right path. He didn't care much for the Catholics though he didn't care much for the religion of his homeland either so the residents simply concluded he was either not a spiritual man or was simply quiet about it. It certainly matched his somewhat stoic demeanor.

Ever since childhood, Diego was a bright young man, but he was considered eccentric at best and foolish at worst. Occasionally compared to Don Quixote from the titular book, he would do his best to ignore these students, but when any of them came for trouble, he tried to fight back. He wasn't much good at it, but his younger brother was. Diego's younger brother resembled more his father than his mom. Despite this, he wielded a poweful charisma and charm. Alot of the other kids disregarded their parents word about the darker skinned boy and spent time with him, to where he formed powerful connections. The two brothers would sometimes not see eye-to-eye, but they were brothers nonetheless. Eventually, Diego was selected to learn the art of alchemy from his professors.

Diego excelled at it, using is own unqiue insights in mysticism to learn about alchemy. However, he did not excel in any partciular branch, instead learnign several branches such as the usage in medicine, metallurgy, elementalism, transmutation and more. Rather than choose a designated school, he decided he learned enough from institutions and decided to head out on his own. While part of this was due to his decision in alchemy, the main part was due to his disdain toward some of the more fanatical aspects of the Habsberg Empire. He bid farwell to his parents, promising to see them once more and set out on his journey with his brother. His brother and him parted ways, his brother continuing to seek adventure and fortune while Diego looked for truth. He was only 15 at the time.

For the several years, he traveled across Europe and hid his background, traveling as nothing more but an alchemist for hire. Most of his works were in metallurgy. In fact, he ended up spending a year in France, where he ended up helping a clockwork engineer. In exchange for his help, Diego took up the hobby of learning how to engineer clockwork devices. However, his hands were unsteady and his focus could be scattered so he was not that good at it. Nonetheless, he perserved and learned enough to help make basic repairs and come up with some clever devices. He even built a relationship with a librarian there. However, he has unfinished business. He continued to wander with the promise of returning to her. He was in a town in the Dutch Republic assisting in the repairs of windmills when he saw the star fall.

Dreams of alchemical significance followed and he knew what must be done. He needed to explore the star and learned what it meant. Gathering his basic essentials, he set out on would be the grandest journey of his life.

Okay, I should have time for this, working on a character.

Is magic going to be a part of this rp? I am talking more artiact based, like a watch that can make the wearer temporarily invisible, for example.

No, not that sort of magic. Just alchemy and its a pretty subtle nature. Mainly old styled classes along with something like a gunner would be pretty good choices, but its not always about combat

Name: Hildur Anthonsen
Age: 26
Gender: Female
Land of Origin: Nordic Union

Appearance:
Hildur is a small woman, being under five foot, and somewhat thin. Her hair and skin are both fair, the former being a nearly white blonde, and the latter milky white. Her hair is slightly curly, and long, but she keeps it tied back in a purple ribbon. Her face is oval with a pointed chin, small nose, and large blue eyes.

Hildur wears a dress made of a slightly coarse fabric, dyed pink and cream, and embroidered with blues, greens, and purples. Over this she wears a dark brown leather vest with pockets for her tools, and spare parts. Additionally she wears light brown knit stockings, and leather boots that are very close in color to her vest.

Her clothes are little old and worn, but she does her best to take care of them, repairing any tears as soon as possible.

Personality:
Hildur's personality is a delicate balance of ladylike and rebellious. Proud at times too. When she knows what she wants, she goes after it. She has a bit of trouble deciding what she wants however, and usually relies more on knowing what she doesn't want.

She's adventurous and likes to explore, as well as learn new things.

She can wrap her head around details fairly well, and remember complex orders or instructions, which is kind of important when you're taking stuff apart and putting it back together. She's creative too, having made a few small toys of her own design to sell.

She is kind, and perhaps a little too trusting, always willing to believe that everyone is good, somewhere inside. However that doesn't stop her from parting ways with those that want things she doesn't, like when she ran away from home. She never thought her family was evil, she just didn't want to not be able to chose her own friends or to marry a stranger.

She does intend to marry someday, probably, maybe. But she wants a say in who she marries, and for the courtship to be terribly beautifully romantic.

History:
Hildur is the daughter of a mechanic, though he'd rarely let her watch him work, encouraging her to go learn from her mother, who was a seamstress, believing her better suited to housework and woman’s crafts. Hildur was rebellious however and wanted none of that, often wandering away for the whole day. Her parents would probably be angry, if either of them realized she wasn't with the other, but they rarely did.

During her wanderings, Hildur came to know a local tinkerer who'd occasionally take advantage of her small hands, by guiding her through delicate work. As time went on she learned a lot from him, and they became good friends. But eventually her parents caught on, and you can imagine the fuss and potential scandal over the fact that a young woman had been alone with this older man so often. Not only was she forbidden to go to his shop again, but she was introduced to the young man she was expected to marry.

Hildur ran, and never looked back. She took with her the small tools the tinkerer had lent her (they could be considered stole now, since she still hasn't returned them), and set off to make a life for herself elsewhere. She's found it difficult, scrapping to make a living by fixing and building small things wherever she found herself, but foreigners seem to more accepting of her life choices, dispute the restrictions they put on their own daughters. The world is funny like that.

She now finds herself fairly far from home, with rumors of a bright star falling in the east. Not having a lot of direction to start with, she's decided to head out after the adventurers going that direction. At the very least she'll get to see another place she hasn't been before.

WIP, sorry it is taking so long. School has been quite annoying. just finished quite a bit of the work, so I have begun working on this.

Name: Alistair Jonas Humphries (Al)
Age: 22
Gender: Male

Land of Origin: Catholic League

Appearance: Al is thin and lean. He is quick with his hands and is always fidgeting with something. His face is pale, and so is his skin because he spends most of his time in poorly lit labs. His eyes are a light green. He wears gold-rimmed glasses. Al has a scar below his left eye from a lab accident, involving broken glasses.

He wears a black lab coat and gloves most of the time. Outside of the lab, he usually is dressed in rough brown travelling pants, dark green shirts and a jacket. He spends quite a bit of time around royalty and holy men. They are the reason he is permitted to continue his craft and he dresses according to the event.

Personality: Alistair feels things. He likes to pay attention to what is going on around him, He focuses on details, often times ignoring large more obvious things. When he makes plans they often have major flaws, and things he ignored. He is an introvert, more self-centered, trying to figure out how every situation benefits him. He has few friends and often times can get on others nerves because he is not thinking about how they feel.
