The Alternative/Indie Rock Thread

Zazie

So 1991
Since there are threads for other musical genres why not one for Alternative/Indie Rock. This thread is for any discussion related this subgenre of rock including artists, albums, news etc. See the other genre threads for examples.

Just like how in the Metal thread discussion of Nu-Metal isn't allowed, discussing of Post-Grunge over here is discouraged.

Radiohead is the best.

Also, I really love listening to alot of Weezer, Shins, Strokes, Beck, Smashing Pumpkins, Brand New. Others I rarely listen to but are good are Minus the Bear and dredg. Amazing stuff. Death Cab for Cutie sometimes.

As for new stuff that I seem to like (aka Indie): The XX, Vampire Weekend, Cursive, Two Door Cinema Club, Passion Pit, Miniature Tigers, Dignan (if anyone comes across this, congrats)

...So pretty much this, exactly.

Plus Circa Survive, Modest Mouse, Interpol, Bloc Party, Silversun Pickups, Manchester Orchestra, Tegan and Sara, TV on the Radio, Of Montreal, We Are Scientists, and a **** ton more.

This is my preferred/favorite genre of music, so I could go on listing bands forever...

I am pretty out of date when it comes to bands I like mostly 80's and 90's stuff like Superchunk, Dinosaur Jr, Built To Spill, Pixies, Seude, etc.

I recently got Superchunk "No Pocky for Kitty", Pixies "Dolittle" and Dinosaur Jr. "You're Living All Over Me"

No Pocky for Kitty is pretty good so far but I think I will need some more listens before I get a good opnion on the record. Doolittle is great the 15 songs are rather short and sound very different from each other, it's kind of jarring but in a good way. I do fel as if the record kind of loses steam on the last 5 songes though as there are a few tracks that exceed the 3 minutes mark.

My favorite so far has been You're Living All Over Me. It is really low fi and loud at the same time so I am not sure whether I would reccomend it to someone just getting into Dinosaur Jr. and some sections of songs go into ear-rape territory but it's got some excellent tracks particularly their cover of the Cure's Just Like Heaven.

Been thinking about getting into Beck. Smashing Pumpkins are definitely awesome I if anyone reading this hasn't done so yet download the album (it's only available as a free download). There is some rather poor recording quality but I personally thin the band sounds better when you strip out all the fancy production. (And I am not really A lo-fi nut).

What's there to discuss anyway?

Thank you, SPPf! :)
New album from Stars came out today, which I've been listening to on repeat.

Yeah, a good 3/4 of my library probably consists of alternative/indie artists. In addition to most of the stuff Rave and The Renowned Obscurity listed, I'm also big on Broken Social Scene, Phoenix, Editors, Grizzly Bear, Arcade Fire, The New Pornographers, Wilco, Metric, and others.

Speaking of Metric, I saw them in concert a couple months ago and had weed being blown in my face all night and was offered various drugs from people that matched hipster stereotypes from head-to-toe.

I liked Weezer up until recently, but I feel their more recent albums are embarrassingly bad. Ah well, that can't soil their great material of the 90's.

Well, I kinda agree with you about the recent albums being worse. When I first listened to Raditude I thought that it was a troll album of sorts. It sounded absolutely awful the first time. Now I don't hate it as much, I find that when listening to it if I don't expect anything amazing like the old stuff from it, it's actually kinda enjoyable. Catchy, if nothing else.

I think something like 60% of what I listen to is indie/alternative, the rest being post-rock, experimental and progressive rock, mostly. Therefore, I listen to many of the bands listened in here like Radiohead, The Smashing Pumpkins, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Phoenix, etc. etc.

Been listening to a lot of Pixies lately. ****'s amazing.

Currently trying to convince a friend to see The New Pornographers next month. To be more specific, I'm trying to convince my Mormon friend that they're a completely tasteful band in spite of their awful name.

Not trying to turn this into a pity party, but I feel like nobody IRL accepts my music tastes. My friends and family - who are mostly Lady Gaga addicts - say that my interests are too obscure (even though I'll gladly listen to a couple more mainstream alternative acts like Coldplay and The Killers).

I actually haven't listened to Raditude (aside from the fairly average lead single), since Make Believe and The Red Album pretty much soured the band for me aside from a couple standout tracks. If it's any consolation, though, Weezer still pumps out entertaining music videos.

Hmm...I actually never thought of The Fray as being an alternative band (I try not to think about them at all), but I see no reason why they shouldn't fit the criteria. Alternative pop rock, I guess. I don't despise The Fray or anything, but I have trouble telling one song from the next.

Weezer recently became an indie band again, since they're no longer under a contract under a major label. So chances are... they might return to becoming better by going back to their roots, or continue making dumb shit like they have been since Make Believe.

We need another Pinkerton or something that at least shows that they at least "grow up" instead of singing the same damn crap over and over.

The fray rules!

They suck, so does country music.

tegan & sara

I can never get into them. They kinda annoy me really.

In terms of more artists that I've been trying lately.

Fleet Foxes are amazing, Beach House, Broken Bells is a must if you love The Shins like I do. I'll also still say that people should at least try to give Dignan a chance, since I think they are sadly underrated. Some electronica like Crystal Castles and Fuck Buttons are amazing. As for some older stuff, I've tried My Bloody Valentine, and am really enjoying what I've actually listened to.

Some groups are not for everybody, like Animal Collective, which, admittedly, is pretty damn tough to get into, but I think it depends on which songs work for you, because they make some pretty weird stuff from time to time.

Of course, Beck is somewhat weird too, but is actually much more enjoyable to listen to.

Speaking of solo artists, has anyone tried Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas' solo record yet? It's an incredibly catchy listen.

Just read that Interpol will be releasing a new album in early September. Good times.

Well, seeing as how you are posting in "The Alternative/Indie Rock Thread", I would think so. (especially since they're sure as hell not indie)

If it's their voices that annoy you, then I guess I can understand. "The Con" is probably their best album, so if you don't like that, chances are they aren't for you.

Ah, I'm loving Broken Bells, and I'm not even a gigantic fan of The Shins. Can't wait to hear future work from them.

I've only heard "11th Dimension", and I can't deny that it's catchy. I'll put the album on my "to-check-out" list. ;)

I tried getting into Animal Collective a while ago. Asked where to start with from someone that listened to them, they suggested me Feels. Overall I like it, but it's not something I would want to listen to a lot. I will eventually try their other material some time, but there's no hurry.

Same thing happened for Grizzly bear, only that I found every song except Two Weeks and Cheerleader out of their Veckatimest album to be very boring.

As of solo artists John Frusciante is my favorite. He's my favorite musician as well! I should try Beck one of these days, people keep telling me that I would like it but I always forget.

Oh and you mentioned Crystal Castles. Man, one of my friends made me download their last album and it's so addicting.

I only have one of his albums, and only got thru the first 4 tracks. I'm gonna try to digest it again later on this weekend.

If you think they are, you probably may enjoy Passion Pit and some of Two Door Cinema Club.

Other stuff that is amazing to try is Flying Lotus' work.
