ANP #076: Peace and Good Quil
(Cue OP-On Our Way-as the song plays, we see various shots of the Pokemon cast in the backstage area, getting ready for a show: Misty walks past one member of the lighting crew, making her trip and drop her paints, which color some of the notes on Brock's sheet music. He tries to clean the music, only to get walloped by a basketball in the face (thrown by May) Pikachu runs past all of this, down a hallway, and through a door with a star on it marked "Ash". He cries "Pika!" and points at a clock, which is ticking dangerously close to "Show Time!" Ash notices the time on the clock and ducks behind a screen to get ready, when he finishes, he's now decked out in a red top hat (with the same design as his cap) and tails. Ash then runs head on at the camera and makes a flying entrance onto a stage as the song concludes)
Female announcer: And now, it's time for the Ash and Pikachu Show!
(Pikachu climbs onto Ash's shoulder and smiles as the title card flies in from the right, a short clip of "On Our Way" in the background)
(Suddenly, Brock appears in the scene wearing his normal clothes and sunglasses)
Brock: We're on fire tonight! (smiles over one last hit of music as the scene fades out)
(Applause as Ash runs onstage to greet the crowd)
Ash: Thank you, and welcome to the first show of Season 4! (wild applause) We've got the usual fare of cartoons, comics, and songs--plus a few new surprises! But before we get started, let's see how Brock is doing with singing the dictionary...
(We cut to another theater, in which Brock is in front of the dictionary singing the B's)
Brock: ...Blast and bathyscaph, blender and bed... (As Brock continues to rattle off words, we see May in the other auditorium with a commentator's headset on)
May: Ash, Brock is going at a nice pace through the B's but he still has a ways to go before he completes the letter...we can only hope that he keeps up this enthusiasm through the remaining 24 letters...back to you.
(We return to Ash in the main theater)
Ash: All right, thank you, May...tonight we're gonna focus on the firebrand of the Johto starters, Cyndaquil! (applause as the spotlight appears on a Cyndaquil. Dawn enters, piqued by the fire mouse Pokemon next to Ash)
Dawn: Who's this? (reaches down to pet the Cyndaquil, but he extends his quills, burning her) YEOW!!!
Ash: I don't think you should pet him that way...(flips open Dexette and lets Kari listen)
Dexette: Cyndaquil, the fire mouse Pokemon. He flares flames from his back to protect himself, which burn vigorously if he is angry...
Dawn: NOW you tell me... (laughter)
Dexette: When tired, he sputters with incomplete combustion. (Sure enough, we see Cyndaquil breathing hard, sputtering all the while)
Dawn: Maybe he'd like to watch something? (wheels out the projector)
Ash: Good idea! (threads a reel in the projector and starts it.)
(CARTOON-"Good 'Quil Hunting", part 1)
(We see a pair of claymation Ash hands trying to start a campfire. After a few unsuccessful attempts, a Cyndaquil appears and uses its quills to get the fire going. The female announcer says "'The Ash and Pikachu Show' will be right back after these messages." as Ash picks up a guitar and starts to play "On Our Way" for the Cyndaquil. One of the marshmallows by the Cyndaquil is Pikachu's face.)
(We see the claymation Ash hands again, this time struggling to make a smore. First the crackers fall, then the chocolate slips out, the Ash loses his marshmallow in the grass. The female announcer says "We now return to 'The Ash and Pikachu Show'!" as the Cyndaquil offers Ash its smore. As we watch Ash take a bite, we notice that the dotted lines on the top cracker make Pikachu's face.)
(We rejoin Ash and Dawn back in the theater as the screen shows Ash and Pikachu running from a rock, then flashes white, indicating that the film ran out)
Cyndaquil: Cynda?
Ash: You want to know what happens next?
Dawn: I asked the people out there what THEY think happens next!
(On Our Way interlude plays as a group of voices say "What Happens Next?" in sync with the words appearing. Dawn's face appears in the dot on the question mark)
(We join Dawn before the projector at a video screen)
Dawn: Now, if you were watching the cartoon earlier, you know that this was the last scene shown before the film ran out...
(we see the scene of Ash and Pikachu running from the rock again)
Dawn: Now, I suppose you're wondering...
Random voices: What Happens Next? (the title card reappears, minus Dawn's face in the question mark)
Dawn: To find out, I asked 50 people on the street what they think happens next based on that scene alone...and here's some of what they said: (turns toward the screen, which shows a blonde haired boy)
Random boy: They're gonna get squished by the rock...
Random woman: Ash and Pikachu are gonna narrowly miss being squashed...
Random man: Ash'll find something to pull him and Pikachu somewhere safe...
Random girls: Pikachu will shatter the rock into a zillion pieces! (the audience laughs)
Random boy: They'll just barely miss getting flattened...
Random man: They'll just barely make it...
Random boy: They'll make it by the skins of their teeth! (at this point, the film ends.)
Dawn: The general consensus is that they'll just barely make it, but stay tuned for the next part of the cartoon, when we find out...
Random voices: What Happens Next? (the title reappears again)
(We rejoin Ash in the theater, where he has the reel for the next cartoon.)
Ash: Thanks, Dawn...let's see what happens next right now! (threads the reel in the projector and starts it)
(CARTOON-"Good Quil Hunting", part 2)
(We rejoin Dawn and Ash in the theater. Dawn has her own acoustic guitar with her, which she tunes as she waits on the band to finish tuning)
Ash: So, you're gonna sing, huh?
Dawn: Well, our resident singer's busy, so I'll fill in for the time being! (applause) This song's called "On the Wind of the Aurora"
(music begins)
Dawn: What a beautiful day! Sun is shining bright! (is shining bright!)
I'm so happy, I almost have to cry!
Was I here before? Is this deja vu? (Is this deja vu?)
No matter now, we will shine on beneath this crystal clear blue sky!
Though I have a dream, it is brand new,
(Let's stay together forever!)
We will find our place, within the world!
On the wind of the aurora, my wish will come flying right to you!
I'm sure it will make it there, but I still want to see you before then!
Underneath a star spangled sky, our two lives long to be together,
