The Authors’ Café Rules

The Authors’ Café Rules and Regulations

All General SPPf Rules apply. Please also read the Fan Fiction Rules.

The Authors’ Café is a place for writers to gather and sit back, relax and chat about everything to do with writing. This is for fan fiction and original works alike, for everyone who loves writing, reading or reviewing. Everyone is welcome, and someone is always willing to listen and provide their help, insight or an opinion to debate!

The rules are simple and can be divided into:

What kinds of topics are allowed here?
  • Discussions and debates about anything writing-related – from discussions on entire genres to questions about writing mechanics, from creating interesting worlds to handling different types of characters, anything goes
  • Discussions about reading – such as what people like and dislike, what people avoid
  • Discussions about writing and reviewing online – about posting fan fiction, responding to readers, critical reading tactics, reviewing tips and so on
  • Requests for help or advice – turning this into a discussion for others to partake in also helps
  • Previews for your upcoming stories – this must be a scene from your story, not just a summary or character description

What kinds of topics don’t belong here?
  • Your actual story – that belongs in the general Fan Fiction Forum if it’s Pokémon-related, or Non-Pokémon Stories otherwise
  • Discussion threads for your story/stories – all comments about your fic belong in your fic thread
  • Story ideas – post these in the Fic Ideas thread unless you’re posting a proper preview, as detailed above
  • Fic advertisements – the only place advertisements belong is in your signature
  • Asking why you don’t get reviews/begging for reviews – there are plenty of reasons for this, but you can use the Review Exchange or the Review Game threads or request a review privately
  • Requests for an editor/beta reader – use The Beta House to find a suitable editor (or apply to be one)
  • Requests for submissions or polls for things to include in your story – it’s your job to come up with characters and decide what happens, not ours
  • Requests to find a specific fic – ask about it here instead
  • Rants – these are a waste of time unless you can turn it into a constructive discussion everyone can engage in
  • Complaints – talk to a mod privately about these

Please do a forum search before posting a new thread to see if the topic you want to discuss has been covered recently! Your question may already have been answered. If the last post in the thread is from more than 60 days ago, you may feel free to start a new one. Posting in older threads is considered bumping and is against the SPPf Rules, though it is acceptable in some threads (see list below).

One rule of thumb for figuring out if a topic is appropriate is by asking yourself, “if everyone makes a thread like mine, will it clutter up the forum?” For example, if everyone made their own threads begging for reviews, the forum would just become a mess.

If you’re unsure if a certain topic is allowed, such as more mature, sensitive or sexual subjects, please feel free to ask one of the Fan Fiction moderators via VM or PM. We’re always happy to help!

The main guideline when posting here is that respect is crucial. Respect the creativity, ideas, opinions, advice and feelings of others, and they in turn will respect you back. If you disagree with someone, you are free to voice it, but you must do so in a polite and respectful manner. Personal attacks and flames are unacceptable. We encourage friendly debate and discussion – the more, the merrier!

This thread is mainly for discussion about the rules, however if you have a small question that doesn’t need its own thread, please feel free to ask here or privately contact a mod. Thanks, and have fun!

For your convenience, we've compiled a directory of useful threads, bumpable threads, and all past fic awards and contests.

Threads in the Useful Thread Archive and the Bumpable Thread Index may be bumped, as long as it is within reason. These threads tend to be helpful and well-used, which is why they have been included but are not all stickied. Should one become very old, members are welcome to create a new version.

Note: Bumpable threads are tools or writing exercises that members may want to come back to over and over again. Got a great idea for a bumpable thread? Got one already in progress? Ask a mod if your thread or thread-to-be (once posted) can be added to the list!

I just noticed that the word "here" isn't a hyperlink. Is it supposed to link to the Fic Recommendation Thread?

I think it actually literally means this thread. XD The last edit date for that post predates the Fic Rec thread, so! (Sorry about that. This thread kiiiiinda needs updating, but we'll get to that. Promise!)

May you post links to external websites?
Kind of depends on what you mean. In general, yes, it's fine. There are only two times there would be a problem with you posting a link to an external site:

1. If you're linking to a piece of writing rather than posting the text on Serebii in the main fanfiction forum. What sometimes happens is people show up and say something like, "Hey, guys, I posted a fanfic on FFN. Here's a link, check it out!" You can include external links in posts in the main fanfic forum, for example if you were inspired by a piece of art and want people to be able to go look at it, as long as the full text of your actual chapter is available in the forum thread.

2. You're linking to something inappropriate/against Serebii rules. Obviously porn links are right out, but any sort of article/image/whatever that either violates one of Serebii's content rules or that's being linked for the purpose of advertising is against the rules.

Other than that, though, it's fair game. So if you wanted to start a discussion in the Author's Cafe, you could post a link to an essay on fanfiction you read somewhere, for example, and ask people to read it and say if they agree/disagree/whatever. Your post should have more meat to it than, "Hey guys, here's a cool link! Thoughts?"--you should at least provide something more specific to discuss than just the article in general, like, for example "Do you agree that fanfic writers should be able to sell their work the same way fanartists often do? Would you ever consider monetizing your fanfic?" But in general, posting a link like that is fine. And of course you can do stuff like link to a dictionary definition or article about punctuation rules if you're backing up an argument. You can even link fanfiction posted on other sites, if it's relevant to what you're talking about and not advertising.

Since individual thread posts are not allowed, I am assuming that you are correct and that I should be posting this request here. I did a quick search for other request threads, but I am just tired of searching at this point :( I apologize if there is a more appropriate place to post this and would appreciate being directed if that is the case.

I have been looking for A E Ø N: End by Kiyohime (A.K.A Scrap). This is a 10 year old fan fiction that won the best fiction award in 2007. I've been at it for the last four hours or so trying to find the complete fiction. Unfortunately the forums here no longer contain the storey, and I have been unsuccessful in finding the story posted anywhere else. Has the author deleted her story? I am not sure... So far I am able to access the first page of the original thread using the way back machine, and am able to get up to chapter 8 (about a third of the fic) by using the wayback machine on the serebii forum archives. Accessing anything past the first page on either sources comes up with nothing; the original doesn't have the later pages saved on the wayback machine and the archives just shows me a blank page. Feverishly searching different key words here and on Google have brought me to a link on the very dead pokemonelite2000 forums that doesn't work on the wayback machine. As for other forums/sites it could have been posted I have yet to find it. I have so far come near the end of my search and am almost ready to quit, but I remember this being such a great story when I was younger that it's hard to think I may never be able to read it again. The author Kiyohime has been inactive on these forums since 2009 and I haven't found a way to contact them. I remember printing the story off so I could read it offline (as I did with my favourite stories at the time) and regret not saving the pages.

Neither of the below links are accessible except through the wayback machine: https://web.archive.org/

The original link to the story: http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=143961
The serebii archive link: http://www.serebiiforums.com/archive/index.php/t-143961.html

Reading the first chapter from the wayback machine brought me waves of nostalgia (and now that I've read a certain book, I can see what a huge reference/homage it was). It would be amazing if someone were to help me locate this fiction, or possibly send me a copy of it (if Kiyohime deleted it from public view for a reason, I am still unclear what the reason these pages are inaccessible). Thank you!

Has the author deleted her story?

Unfortunately, yes, and that's all I'm at liberty to say.

In response to that last part, though, these pages are likely not viewable to the public because the Wayback Machine doesn’t necessarily archive everything. But even then, I’m afraid I can’t honor a request to give folks a private copy of the fic for their own use. Authors might delete their works for any number of reasons, including ones that are highly personal, so in my view, it’d just be right to leave that story alone. That said, I fully encourage you to take a look at the fics on this forum that are still fully available to the public, including our full archive of completed works and currently-running stories. Thanks, and sorry again for the inconvenience!

It's such a disheartening thing to hear. I'm still in denial that it doesn't exist somewhere, as it was a very important piece of fiction to me to long ago. Knowing the author deleted it does give me an answer at least as to why I was unable to find it or any of their other works. I've done all I can do for now but I hope one day she reconsiders the decision to delete her posts so I may be reunited with her story.

There are a couple of other stories still here that I intend on reading again so I will move on to those for now. Thank you for answering me back so quickly!

The Bumpable Thread Index that JX Valentine put together has been combined with the Useful Threads post below the Café Rules up-thread! That should help keep them all together and make them easier to reference!

I think the Archives need to be updated with the 2016 Serebii Yuletide and the 2016 Fan Fiction Awards? Edition 6 of the Fan Fiction Quarterly is missing as well and so is the Fan Fiction Quarterly Challenge Winners Thread, though I'm not sure how important the Quarterly stuff is because it's been discontinued.
Thanks for pointing these out! I've added them as well as the Platonic fan fic contest and the Fifth Gate! Let me know if we're missing any others!

Hey!

Apologies if this isn't the right place to post this. But this is a shot in the dark but worth a shot nonetheless.

I’ve been looking for a collection of Pokemon fanfics that were crossovers with Monster Rancher that I wanna say were created between 2002-2005. I don’t remember which site it was on but it wasn’t on FF.net or AO3. If I had to go off memory, it was on a Pokémon fan made web page I may have found it through here on the Serebii website/forum during that time, where it had a fanfic page where I read them or if it was on a MR fan page. Not sure if the website is still around or not.

So Here’s what I remember about what I’m looking for:

Again, the fanfics were crossovers with Monster Rancher & Pokémon, where certain monsters from MR exist as Pokémon, I believe. From the little bit I remember, one of the stories had Tiger of the Wind (from Monster Rancher) as one of Ash Ketchum’s Pokémon. From the moment of being caught, Ash & Tiger’s partnership started off rocky, somewhat similar to how Charizard was at first before they start being on good terms with each other as the story progresses.

And that’s all I can really give, unfortunately.

Like I said before, asking for this is a shot in the dark since it was long ago and they weren’t on FF.net or AO3 at the time. But worth a shot nonetheless. So if anyone who’s been around on the internet as long as I have lol, any help with this would be appreciated. Or if you happen to remember the website also I can try using the Wayback Machine site.

If this isn't the right place to post, my apologies again and let me know the correct board or thread to post.

Thank you
