The cities - for what are you hoping?

So, the question stands: what kinds of cities do you want to see?

We've had a pretty motley assortment of cities so far, but I have yet to see a city that satisfies what a true cosmopolitan city ought to incorporate: influences from all over the place in a single area. Should Nintendo design for D/P the Brussels of the Pokemon world, I would be more than elated to observe it and peruse its streets. For this city, I'm thinking that it should be a large port city with a library that allows a variety of materials to be read and taken out. This library also has a secret section unveiled after defeating the E4 which would serve to chronicle the history of the Pokemon franchise. In addition to this library, also noteworthy within the city are delegations from each of the three regions, which provide information about the regions and, when you defeat the E4, would allow you to access those regions provided you have a cartridge that contains the data for that region (a bonus pack could serve to incorporate Johto).

In addition to this influenced city, I would also like to see a mountain town situated at a high altitude. It is perenially covered in snow, which is reflected on the roofs and throughout the streets of the city. A skilift within the town would allow you to access the start of the skiing path at the top of the mountain while an alternative walking route would allow you to hike up there or use a mountain bike, all the while being privy to encountering wild Pokemon. However, the town itself presents a unique delight with its very own theater enclosed within a dome of ice. Here, you can view a variety of movies which would either be on the cartridge or otherwise downloadable from some network.

For one, I'm sure hoping that this all-new region will encompass some newfangled cities such as the ones I just described.

I'd definitely like to see a more extensive city. What I mean is more buildings, people, etc. It could have alley ways where you can run into a wild pokemon or a trainer. So far the towns and cities in the pokemon RBY-RSE haven't been very realistic in terms of size and cosmopolitan status. Perhaps DP will make an improvement on that.
A place like Oldale Town isn't a realistic town with only a PokeMart, PokeCenter, and Two houses.

Also, I think that they should stop having buildings with no doors. I mean, it is not very logical to have such things. They could at least put doors on and say its locked or something. I think that the library idea is great. I mean, they could have certain things for reference, kind of like early pokemon acadamy in pokomon stadium 2, but with more stuff.

I think that they should have some sort of hidden villiage in this game, or an ancient site. I mean, kind of like the ruins of alph, but better. And the cities need to be bigger. Kind of like 3 times as big as Rustburo(sp?). And the smaller cities nood to me something a bit bigger than dewford. I mean, I know that the dities arew not going to be huge, but it would be good if they were.

I also think that they should have a plain or something in this game, that takes you to other regions. I think that the expansion packs are a good idea. I mean, it would expand on the game. Also, I think it would be good if all of the pokemon centres in different cities were different. I mean, you are in a city with really old buildings, yet the pokemon centre ooks identical to the one in the last city you visited. I think this would be a nice change.

I like all of that, and the high alt town is straight out of my mindset.

Larger cities is what I want, obs not too big, but it shoudl take a while to fidn all of what the city has to offer.

I think it would be good if the cities were much more realistic, but if they were too big with so many buildings and things, I would find it really confusing and hard to remember where everything is.
I think that, if they were to make really big cities, they would need to do something about giving you a map of whatever place you're in so you're not wandering around lost for hours trying to find a PokéCenter or something.

Hmm... So we have:

- Cosmopolitan, massive city, complete with extensive research library
- A high altitude town with snow and skiing slopes, and an indoor theatre
- An ancient ruins settlement

I think they're all good ideas but I think you should be careful about having a too big city or it would be too easy to get lost.

I think a more advanced Pacifidlog Town would be nice so basically a floating island.
And a city in the cliff. But that's quite hard for Pokemon to achieve.

well a good city would have a giant store(different from before) & have 6 houses + new place like a company or something + contests + grass areas

Supreme Overlord
I certainly missed a Saffaron-like city is R/S/E so that would be nice but also another Fortree like place would be nice, Much Much Snow, maybe even a town in a cave... OoOoO

The Flat World

Free Trade For All
It would be nice to see another big city... bigger than Goldenrod.

In fact, they could create a metropolis.

i'm hoping more big and creative cities, and come on, not everybody wan'ts to walk/fly every where, so there has to be cars and roads in this

For those who are complaining about the cities being too big: It's not like the game can't provide maps for the individual metropolises.

Anyway, I have another idea!....I would like to see a settlement that is entirely underground, like in a quarry or something. It would have a variety of festivities involving its proximity to the mining areas, and there would be an event there that would allow you to salvage such things as Nuggets, Star Dust and Star Pieces, Hard Stones, Soft Sand, Everstones, and some new items possibly relating to salt. This place would be somewhat comparable to Goron City in Ocarina of Time, but of course it would be adapted to fit the Pokemon world.

Eszett, your ideas are brilliant, and the city you mentioned on the mountain covered in snow, I have thought of something quite similar to that many times. Also, to pair with the underground city, which I would completely love, I would like to see an underwater city, in which you have one of those intermediate chambers where the water is drained, and then you gain access inside. This city would have a transparent dome covering it, in which you could see the water outside exactly like when you're diving.

Edit: I forgot, this is what I posted in the Gameplay Ideas forum:

What I'd like to see is underwater cities, something like the Sea Basin that you have to dive to get into, but it's still in a cave and underwater, unlike Sootopolis. Or even better, cities that are actually exposed to water, so that you have to go through one of those chambers that empties the water out before you enter a building. And I would also like to see a pure diving route, you know, that the only way to get through it would be by diving, unlike the ones that have that huge sea trench that you don't have to go into. One last thing I would love is hidden island cities, sort of like Pacifidlog, except that you don't know it's there. It would be outside the borders of the map.

It's basically the same thing, save the last part.

That's a cool idea, but how can you fly to an underground city, or a city in a cave? The Quarry is a good solution I suppose. I would also like a strange underground settlement of people, like in the middle of a cave.

You don't fly to the underwater city, you dive first and then swim there, or, I suppose, for those people who do like to fly to save time, then there would be a patch of land that you could fly to, right above the dome I mentioned, and an opening on it so you could climb down into the city. I guess there would have to be some sort of rope ladder. The same would go for an underground city, another opening for that, but instead of a rope ladder, a staircase.

You would fly right outside of it, I suppose. :p

Hmm...I'm thinking about a megacity reminiscent of New York that would offer a huge variety of things to do within it, but at the same time I don't want it to take up too much memory with the cities. :< Hmm, perhaps it would allow you to find the occasional wild Pokemon within a city itself, like a certain region of this city filled with a Pokemon based on the rock dove. In addition, it would sport a park whereby you could spot other trainers and have friendly battles with them. Oh the possibilities. :D

Your last idea sounds like National Park right above Goldenrod, which I would very much like to see brought back. Also, imagine having the Subway in Pokémon! Though, I would very much like to see a system of underground tunnels you could walk through, that would really appeal to me, as I love discovery.

Your idea kind of reminds of the subterranean city in the old school PS1 video game called Legend of Legaia.
IIRC the people were living there to protect themselves from something; some kind of ominous disaster :-/
But yeah that'd be a neat new idea.
To Blue Star: Yeah subways are posible, I mean we already had the magnet train in GSC. Perhpas the DP region will have an underground system.
An underground city
A subway
A sewer system

I like to see cities like Olivine, Slateport, Violet and such that have interesting buildings in it, like museums, towers, light houses etc.

It's not very original, but perhaps a semi-abandoned city with a lot of factories in it. Sort of like the city Ash caught Muk in, but with an actual population present, and the power plants there would send energy to other cities.

It'd probably be off the beaten path, and the only reason you'd go there would likely be because of a power failure, and someone implores you to go to the city because none of the other trainers around have enough experience to get through the forest/cave/whatever between the city out of power and the city generating the power.

Again, that's really unoriginal. I think having a city with an airport or train station would be pretty cool, though you yourself might not necessarily be able to ride upon the train or planes. I think some really good activities have already been proposed, like parks, libraries, etc.

Hm. There was already a farm in GSC, but if they have a well-developed farm with several stables and a huge silo, it'd be a pretty cool place, I think.

I've always thought the first glimpse of a decent, thought-out city was either Fortree or Lilycove. Although I believe R/S/E had too many ports, it was nice to see something different other than your basic city.

In Diamond and Pearl, I'm hoping for elaborate towns. Someone mentioned not having anymore building with no doors? I completely agree. Make it somewhat realistic, and have people interested in reaching the next town. I also think they should make it more of a challenge getting to these places. Having to achieve a snowmobile to get to a summit town, where you ahieve skis, or a snowboard and go to the next city or town on the other side of the mountain. Or having to ferry yourself over water, using a boat. Something out of the ordinary will most likely please me.
