As someone who picked them on his over 1000 hours Y playthrough, I agree.

Just a fun thought that I wanted to share.

My head canon likes to believe that Alain is a version of Calem who unmaliciously went rogue. Both are associated with Professor Sycamore, have black hair, a similar hair style, and close enough eye colors and facial structures.

Calem also owns a Chesnaught and Charizard X in the Adventures manga, which I tend to pass off as part of his canon team.

Chespin may have actually been Alain's original starter pokémon give to him by Sycamore as it was suggested that he already had trainer experience prior to owning a Charmander, and maybe also why he took such a fondness to Mairin and her Chespin as they reminded him of himself.

Not a bad theory.

Alain, despite his edgy lordness, has good taste for starters.

Anyway after watching with subs, I’d say all the stuff with Alan and the battle is still trash but the first half I quite liked seeing the interactions and stuff, Iris was a delight and the selfie was adorable. It’s almost like this should’ve been two separate episodes or something, 5/10

Really sad this is what y’all wanna focus on when the episode lovingly focused on her growth, just shows how Amour is the only thing that matters to a lot of her fans

I couldn't care less about amour or shipping in a show that I'm in for the multiple monsters interacting with humans and throwing it down, I just want to see a character that the show has made me legitimately like with this episode interact with the protagonist after the show tried slamming into my face through the course of an entire series that they have a nice bond, that's all, and it's no different from me wanting to see characters like the Masters 8 interacting with Ash instead of filling a rushed battle in what should be an episode about introducing these characters properly.

Considering that the battles were meant to be one-shot sketches, I presume the original episode was meant to be champions interacting before we see a glimpse of the battle.

But since it became animate the battles, I think the series has extended the episode count just to incorporate that.

hehe after re-watching the battle with proper subtitles i feel slightly better about the episode. i liked the battle between Rillaboom and Chesnaught. Rillaboom taking advantage of its increased speed from Max Air Stream was a good touch and it makes since that a 110 base power hit that is 4 times effective against Chesnaught would one-shot it. Malamar going down to a single move didn't seem too crazy either since Charizard made a sick catch and hit him point blank. Now on to Charizard vs Charizard... i would have felt MUCH better about this battle if Leon's Charizard was seen receiving an Ancient Power stat boost. Seeing him take on Alain's Mega Charizard X with boosted stats would have made for a more believable knock out. I do appreciate how Leon changes Charizard's moveset often, it reminds me of Drake's Dragonite. I hear many online saying Leon has not deserved his number 1 rating due to him likely being only number 1 due to him being the Galar Champion and it's gen 8, but i disagree, i have enjoyed all the battles he has participated in. I loved seeing his Charizard handle Alain's Charizard's attacks, i was just disappointed in how badly Alain's Charizard took that Dragon Pulse after taking multiple blows from Ash's Pikachu and Greninja in his previous battle.

Well, if anything, I guess this episode treated Chesnaught with more respect than the entirety of XY. So congradulations writers, you actually gave my favorite Kalos starter decent treatment. Now if only you can do the same to Samurott (aka make his trainer awesome), and you'll need to work extra extra hard on that considering that Hisuian Samurott is still on my mind, and I still haven't forgiven Gamefreak for making an alternate form of my favorite Unova starter a lazy recolor where, besides the color, the things that are different put me off of it.

i was also glad to see a Chesnaught get some decent representation even if it isn't my favorite. i love when fully evolved starter pokemon are shown to be effective. Still waiting for a decent Typhlosion to show up in the main series and you are right about Samurott and a "decent" trainer lol.

That, and it only does super-effective damage against non-Charizard foes.
