The D/P Attacks & Pokemon - Opinions

Ryano Ra

Verdant Vitality
Yes yes. *walks around hippie-style*

I'm not exactly sure if there's any thread about this, but I've searched in this particular forum, and couldn't find a single thread. So, why don't I get this party started with a club-hopping question that'll have everybody up on their feet, thinking about what dance move to perform to which lyrics. XDD

But yes, with Diamond and Pearl set for a 2007 release, what are your opinions about authors using them NOW in fanfictions? And since little is known about the new attacks thus far, what are your opinions about authors using their imagination to carve details and such of the new attacks? Would it be wrong or would it appropriate at this time?

The main reason I asked this is because in my chaptered fanfiction that's coming out sometime in Spring of next year, I have used new Pokemon and have used new attacks. For example, in the fourth chapter, the main character battles against a Gardevoir with his Elekible (though, now I can go back and edit as to how his Electabuzz evolved, being as it has been revealed). And in the sixth chapter (after examining what the old Pokemon can learn in Diamond/Pearl), in a huge battle, a character's Sceptile uses Energy Ball (but used in a particular way; for example, in order for Sceptile to use it, Solarbeam and Sunny Day must have been used at the start of the battle for a very particular reason that I dare not to reveal). And, I'm thinking about having a character have a Rentoraa.

But yes ; what are your feelings on this complex situation?

Hi Serpent Syra (or should I now say Malyntrix).

In the ficcie I'm working on, I'm having the girl obtain a Rentoraa through evolving her Korinku.

I also think it will be difficult for the description of the new attacks to fit in good enough with the stories.

Well, I suppose people wish to use the new ones as soon as possible, like before the barrage of D/P writers storm in..

Well, everything Shinou really is up for grabs. Like a ball of clay, you know whats there, and what its made of, but only you can sculpt the perfect image of it. I really don't see whats too wrong about that, seeing as some moves like Luster Purge had me confused when R/S/E came out, but I imagined a miraculous eam of estial energy braking through a streamless wall of mythical light. Pokemon move, cn rally be interpreted by name alone in some cases though. Like energy ball, in the game it may have a big ball bounce down across the feild towards the enemy, when a fan-fic writer would describe it as the same sized ball at same speed being shot from there mouth. Really, moves don't concern me that much..

But the new Shinou pokemon are a little..iffy. Munchlax, Mime.Jr, and Weavile I see as fine in a fan-fic cause we've known it for a while. Seen them anime, serebii news updates, and all the latest sprites. There like the framilliar, yet new pokemon we've come to know and love over the last year. But then..The New wave arrives.. Pochoma, Elikable, Rozieundo, BAM!! all comin out a nowhere. Suddenly, people are takin by storm at the vast library of new pokemon on the scene. We've just known them for, what, 4 months and the anime in Japan already's tempting us with tanaalizing pictures and Sympnosis. A pokedex has come out. All these things are like a huge foundation of facts to build there perfect fan-fiction about Shinou pokemon ever created. But really, we don't know THEM.

There just pokemon pictures and text. We don't know how they fight, how much fun it is to train them, wjhat it's like to own them.. Just picking favorites by images alone. That really makes me slightly repelling to a fic containing fresh pokemon, seeing as we know so little, yet the bhai\vior and statistics of the pokemon will be explained in this fic to the readers interpretation, as does all the others, all different. Like this, in fic 1, Pikachu is a small, electric mouse pokemon with rich yellow fur and a tendancy to walk on its fours at all times. Pikachu are always shy and like to stay away from humans and themselves, leading to the rare appearence of Pikachu these days. Then fic 2 deacribes Pikachu as a strong, defiant warrior. Likes to feel the open air and be around people and socialize, specially the ladies. They are often in massive aboundance and are found in practuically every known area in the universe. Two completely different viewpoints. Which ones REALLY Pikachu? The true nature of the pokemon? We don't know, and what will happen with the newer ones is th masive scramble of opinions umong pokemon.

In my up-coming fan-fic, I plan on using atleast one Shinou pokemon, Bonsly, and perahps Togekiss aswell. I wrote an older version of this a while ago, and I really didn't know what Bonsly was.. Just a nice pokemon that rode beside my character and fought tough battles. But with the recent appearences in the Anime, pokedex entries, ect.. I've learned that Bonsly really are sweet pokemon but cannot eat solid food at a young age. Must be commonly protected by a mother/father. I know what Bonsly are like at heart,so when i re-write my fic I can truly deem Bonsly a fighting soul. And Togekiss, I know plenty because it derives from the Togepi family, a loving, playfull bunch. I can just imagine and enchanc how wonderful Togekiss can be, though it's personality will be much different. Other oriogonal Shinou pokes are stilll so new, and open to so much.

So I really don't like to use alot of Shinou guys in my fics, seieng as thre just so new..

Really and truly
Ryano Ra, Serpent Syra, Malyntrix...it's all just Greek to me. Cuz it's tooooooo low...for zero...
Shame I can't go to the Elton John concert. ;;

Anyways, let's get on to the topic at hand. The Fourth Generation...how I loathe it. ;D But with its American release date drawing ever closer, avoiding it is inevitable.
What a shame.

Personally, I don't want to start using any of the new Pokémon until their English names are revealed and we know more about them. I mean, it would be weird to call them one thing for most of your fic, but then be forced to switch because nobody knows the Japanese names anymore, and they then bug you because you're calling some characters by their Japanese names and others by their English names.

If I end up using any Fourth Generation Pokémon at all, I'll probably wait to find out their English names first, just so I don’t get screwed over later on.

But attacks on the other hand is a bit different. Of course there will still be a little bit of trouble because right now the attack names are roughly translated and might not actually be their final, English names, which may cause further confusion.

However, I say that if you want to use them, go for it.

I mean, everyone interprets already existing attacks differently. I've seen Dragon Rage, an attack from the First Generation, portrayed in many different ways. There is no totally set way to describe any attack, and we're not forced to go by those in the cannon- after all, the show shows an attack looking some way while XD or Colosseum will show it differently.
You can pretty much do whatever you want with attacks, whether you want non-Fire Types to have blue-flamed Flamethrowers or have Thunder be a bolt of lightning coming down from the sky is all up to the author, and nobody can really say it's wrong.
Unless Absorb like, sucks an enemy's knowledge out of its brain or something. Then it's just...wrong. o_O

Personally, I don't plan to even touch the new pokemon or their attacks until the games are stateside and I've had a chance to play with them and become familiar with the way all the new things work. That's just me, though--personally, I don't see a problem with having a bit of fun and trying to come up with your own ways for the attacks to work. It's not really as though anybody has a better idea than anyone else at this point, anyway, so it's more or less anything goes.

In your case, however, I'd be more cautious to do so. You won't be releasing your 'fic until next spring which is (according to popular rumor, anyway) going to be some considerable time after the games come out, everything is in English, and people are going to be getting acclimated to it all. If you released a D/P 'fic now, people would accept your version of the attacks with probably little question. Once they've gotten a notion of how the attack is "supposed" to work, however, your own personal interpretation will probably do more to confuse them than anything else. Take, for example, "rock cart"; somehow, I think that the English name will be far different, and if you base your description on the translated name and what little information we have about it you're going to end up with something that's not even recognizable as equivalent to the actual attack.

Edit: Oh wait, January is somehow springtime now? In that case I assume you'd be some considerable way into posting your 'fic by the time the games and English stuff in general came out, so you'd probably be all right.

There's quite a few pokémon I'd like to use as potential characters... but I'll have to wait until it comes to North Amercia and get English names.

And I've sworn I made a thread like this ages ago...

Xtra

You will be missed:(
I use pokemon that fit, no matter what generation they appear in.

Wow, so much wonderful advice. o_o;;

I thought over it and being as I've heard that it'll be released sometime in the Spring/Summer of next year, then I will be able to avoid the problems and such of the names (and, the only ones I were going to use was Rentoraa and Beequeen). But then again, I thought about the fact that the English names of some of the attacks might be changed drastically, such as Attack Command, Defense Command, and quite a sum of others. I just wanted to figure out, being as I didn't want to use a new Pokemon and have everybody jumping onto my back about it; as for the attacks, that's a more different story. I usually craft my own styles about how the attacks are used, being as I personally think as though different Pokemon perform the same attack in different ways. But, hopefully, if English names and such will start to be revealed, I will be able to edit the names and hopefully avoid any problems.

Oh, and Negrek, I'm not exactly sure if January would be counted as a month of spring -- where I live, it still snows like crazy throughout January. XD

I was referring to the fact that it says in your signature that the fanfiction will be released in January, while you said in your post that it would be released in the spring.

Different stories then, I suppose?

I pinch.
(I think I discussed this in the other D/P pokémon thread, so some of this might be repeated.)

I would, personally, wait until I'd played the games and gotten a feel for how the new attacks/new pokémon/etc. work. As well, I always find it a bit jarring to be using japanese names alongside the english ones, and I wouldn't be able to resist going back and changing things to make them square with the english versions.

Personally, I also need some time to get a taste for some of the new pokémon--this is the first generation where there's only a few I've really loved on sight. x)

I have been tempted by the concept of non-english-speaking trainers appearing in my 'fics and using the japanese/french/german names for pokémon, so I might be able to sneak a DP pokémon in that way, but considering my rate of updating the games will probably be out before I can do that. x)

I will use them once we have all of their English names, and not a minute sooner. If I'm going to put one of them in, I want to be able to put all of them in, and I won't do it without English names. Attacks are a different story. I won't use those until I've had time to actual play Diamond and Pearl through a few times, so I'm actually familiar with all of them. Until I do, I won't think of them when plotting out my battles anyway, so there's no use in officially declaring that I will use them.

i have to agree with Xtra use the pokemon that fit for the story and just use your imagination with the attacks they can only be so hard to come up with

x_x;; Oh. ^^;; Yes, Skies of Sin (the one advertised in my fanfiction) is a mere eight-chaptered story that links the chaptered saga, C H A M P I O N. Skies of Sin is more of an introductory to Champion, and hopefully, will clear up some things and such.

But yes, after hearing other people's opinions, I decided on this; to not delay the progress of my fanfiction, I will use the Japanese names UNTIL the English names are revealed, and go back and edit them during the editting process. Same will go for the new attacks, though, most of them seem accurate enough to me. :3 *tetters around angrily*;444;

My whole take on using the Diamond/Pearl Pokemon or attack is this: Pokedexes in story could have very little information in them about these Pokemon. Also, if you look at the advent of Pokedex entries in other languages in the games, it means that these could all be recently discovered by Japanese trainers, and they only have Japanese names until English professors have a chance to classify them.

Since the only fic I'm close to starting is GSC era, though it might use a couple new attacks, none of the new Pokemon will show up, except possibly in humorous cameos, as it is a comedy fic.
But for others, especially Desperado, the names are essential first.

Jwla, I think thats a neat idea about the Japanese and English professors.

I don't know. Personally, I think you should go with your gut with this one. If you really want to use a D/P Pokemon, go for it. It doesn't have to have its a 'stock' personality. Go with what works.
