The Deck Squad
(A Digimon Fanfic) (Rated G - PG-13 for Varying Themes)
Episode One
Coronamon's Clash!
The school bell rang. From a distance, one could hear the screaming and rumbling of footsteps.
"YEAH!" teenagers yelled in all directions. "SUMMER VACATION!"
Teruki Matsuoka was especially happy. He held his light basketball in his arms. Daisuke Takashi was one of the people in the front of the crowd. He didn't want to be late for his team's swim meet after school.
Keigo Saito was still at his locker getting his skateboard and other gear out from it.
Zane Yoshida read a science-fiction book as he walked out of the school.
Meiko Nakamura walked alone staring at Teruki from a distance. As she daydreamed of him, she heard someone call out to her.
"Meiko!" Keigo yelled. Meiko saw Keigo, her cousin, waving to her. "Hey, I could bring you to your house. My mom's picking me up to go to the skate park and your house is on that road." Meiko looked at Teruki, then walked quickly to her cousin.
Teruki caught up with his friends. "Hey, guys, wanna go shoot some hoops?" Teruki asked.
"Nah," his friend Shinji said. "Gotta meet up with some other friends." Teruki turned to his other friend, Ryo.
"I'll come," he said. "What about you guys?"
The other friends cheered. "Cool," Teruki said.
Then, Shinji's phone rang. "Yello," he greeted the caller. "Oh, I'll be there right away. Gotta go, guys." He ran off.
"Let's go," Teruki yelled, running to the basketball court.
Daisuke was practicing at the team's outdoor pool. He finished doing a 200 Individual Medley and took off his goggles. Then he looked up at the sky. He wiped his eyes to make sure that what he was staring at was real. It seemed to be a small meteor coming straight at him. Then someone yelled to him.
"Hey, Daisuke, here's your kick board!" he yelled. The guy tossed the kick board to Daisuke. He was ready to catch it when he felt something hot against his face. He turned to see only orange filling his vision. Then, everything went black. The kick board passed him by, and his teammates crowded around him.
Keigo balanced on his skateboard and sped down the half-pipe. He landed safely on the other side and whooped. After three fellow skaters rolled down and up the half-pipe, Keigo balanced and went again. Then he heard someone shout to him, "Watch out, Keigo!" He looked around and fell off his skateboard. He rubbed his head, then looked up. He realized what the person was warning him about. A small meteor rocketed to him. He stared up at it for a while, and then it crashed upon him. Others crowded around him. “What was he looking at?” and “What happened to him?” were mumbled throughout the crowd.
Zane typed on his computer. He was chatting with his friends through the web. A crowd of tough guys walked past him.
"What a nerd," he heard them whisper as they passed him by. He looked at the youngest one of them. It was a Spanish guy named Pedro, who just moved to Shinjuku. Zane looked back at his computer.
"Hey," he said to himself. "Timmy's on." Timmy was one of his friends who was in fifth grade. Hey, guys! Timmy typed.
Zane typed back, Hey, Timmy. There was no reply. Zane tried to type to him again, but there was still no reply.
"Pedro, speak to me, dude!" Zane heard on of the tough guys shout.
Zane sees that Pedro is suddenly unconscious. Right next to him is a small, technical device that is flashing slowly on the screen. He looks back to his computer to find that it's blacked out. He looks up at the sky and prays that it would turn back on, but sees a small meteor come at him. He rubs his eyes to see if he's mistaken, but once he opens them again, the meteor is right in front of him. He blacked out.
Meiko chatted with her friend, Midori, on her cellphone. "Okay, bye," she finished, but Midori didn't reply. Meiko sighed. Well, she's always been the spoiled and snobby type. She walks out on to the deck on her apartment, and calls another friend.
"Hey, Serena," she greets. "I'm doing good." Then, she hears her dad call her name. "Meiko, ya home?" She turns around and locks the glass door behind her.
"So, you going to the mall today?" she asks. Her dad saw her and tried to open the door. "Nah, can't come, my dad just got home." Meiko's dad tried to yell, but the glass was soundproof. She looked down at the skate park only a block away. She saw Keigo do a fancy trick where he turns his board while it's still going.
"Hello?" Serena asked.
"Oh, sorry," Meiko replied. She stared into space and spotted something. An football-sized meteor going towards Keigo.
"Wait a second, Serena," Meiko said. "WATCH OUT, KEIGO!" Then, he fell off his skateboard and was hit by the meteor.
"Serena, I have a problem," Meiko confessed. "Serena? Serena! SERENA! Ugh!!" Meiko turned her cell phone off. She looked behind her and just watched her dad bang against the glass. She mouthed the words, 'I'm not getting you another beer.' Her dad walked away. She looked up at the dimming sky and saw something small and bright. It was another small meteor. She backed against the closet and unlocked the door. She quickly went in and ran to her room. Then she realized something; she left her cell phone on the banister. She ran to get it. The meteor was only a foot in front of her. There was no escape.
Teruki ran and dribbled to the hoop. He jumped up, and slam dunk! As he looked up to catch the basketball, he noticed a bright light heading toward him.
"Hey, guys," Teruki said. "What do you think that is?" He pointed to the light. "Where?" the rest of the guys asked.
"It's right there," Teruki pointed out. He kept on pointing to the light. He looked closer and realized it was a meteor the size of a football.
"Dude, you're delusional," Ryo said.
"It's weird," Teruki said, eerily. The meteor was nearly upon him. "It's coming straight at me!" Teruki realized. He blacked out.
Five o’clock rang on the alarm in the hospital room. Teruki groaned. He woke up and got out of his bed, and turned off the alarm. He saw other people from his school. “Wow, everyone looks beat here,” he joked to himself.
Then, the lights turned on, and he ran to his bed. Teruki closed his eyes. A nurse with a cart stacked with packages entered the room. The nurse put the packages on the big table in the center. The nurse left, turning the lights to dim. Teruki got up.
Then the lights brightened.
Everyone groaned and woke up. Some of them rubbed their heads.
"Whoa, where am I?" Keigo asked.
"Well, duh," Zane replied haughtily. "were probably at the hospital."
"Wait, Zane, aren't you that geek who made the whole school read for a whole day?" Midori asked.
"Yeah, why ask?" Zane replied.
"Your life must be so boring."
"Hey it wasn't that bad," Serena spoke up.
"Midori, Serena, were you hit by a meteor?" Meiko suddenly spoke up.
"Oh, yeah," Midori remembered. Serena nodded.
"Raise your hand if you got hit by a meteor," Teruki announced. Everybody looked at each other, then raised their hands.
"So that's why Timmy and Pedro were not answering," Zane said to himself.
Teruki interrupted the conversation as he walked to the big circular table in the middle of the room. He opened the package with his name on it. Inside was a small technical device that had a screen, 8 buttons, an mini antenna, small speakers, red grips, and a strange insignia on the back. The other teens came over and checked it out.
Then Timmy exclaimed, "Hey, I've got one, too!"
Teruki and the others turned to see Timmy holding the same device, but with light blue grips.
The others looked in their packages. They all had the same kind of device.
Teruki noticed the power button and pressed it.
Suddenly, everyone's device powered on. The antennas gave off a glowing light, which began to gather over the round table.
Suddenly, a voice was heard from that light. "I don't know who will get this message, but I know I can trust you," the clear, deep voice said. "I have been annihilated by unknown beings. I am able to send you my last will. My will is to send out 9 Digimon to you. A Digimon is a digital being, but these ones in particular have a great purpose in their life. You, new caretakers of my last will, must become Tamers. Use them to revive my home land." After the voice finished explaining, it spoke an ancient language and the light disappeared. The group's devices were beeping rapidly after a moment of silence and confusion. A digital screen appeared out of the screen on the device. A beam of light came out of the digital screen and landed on the bed. An egg lay on the bed.
As the group walked toward their own bed to check it out, a nurse knocked on the door. They all got into bed. The nurse walked in. Some of the group rubbed their eyes to fool the nurse.
"Kids, your parents will be picking you up at 8:00," she said. "Get dressed and get ready." She walked out of the room.
Daisuke got his clothes.
"Hey, Teruki can you stay here and watch our belongings?" Daisuke said. "We're going to go change." The other teens nodded with agreement.
"Okay, don't worry," Teruki said. The others walked out of the room with their day clothes.
Teruki sighed and rubbed the egg.
Gee, I wonder what's in the egg. He placed his device next to the egg and looked in his backpack for his day clothes. As he rummaged through his bag, he heard a fainted humming sound. He looked back to the egg and stared with awe as it glowed. He edged toward it very carefully. All of a sudden, the egg rose up. Its eggshell disintegrated, showing a bright light held by a slimy film, but the light didn't fall out. The light exploded into shining swirls. Teruki turned around as the light formed a creature behind him. It was a small lion cub that stood on its hind legs. It had bright scarlet fur and weird metal symbols on it. "Whoa, where am I?" it said. The creature looked at Teruki. "Okay, then," he said. "Hi, my name is Coronamon," it said.
Coronamon, rookie level Digimon. His Coro Punch attack is a blazing tackle!
"Coronamon, huh," Teruki said, quizzically.
"Yep, that's my name!" Coronamon said. "So, what's your name?"
Teruki looked at him. "Uh, oh, it's Teruki, Teruki Matsuoka," he said.
"Wait," Coronamon said. "It should be Terukimon."
"Why do you say that?" Teruki asked. "Don't you have a last name, too?"
Coronamon shook his head. "What's a last name?" he said. "Anyway, are we gonna stand here saying each other's name for the whole day?"
"Oh, sorry," Teruki apologized. “Wow, whoever was speaking through that light sure has a lot of nerve to give it's pets to us.”
Footsteps were heard from down the hall. Teruki perked up. "Quick, under the bed!" he ordered. He pushed Coronamon under the bed. The others came in, dressed and ready to leave. They picked up their eggs. Everything was fine until Timmy noticed that Teruki did't have his egg.
"Hey, Teruki what happened to your egg?" he asked.
Teruki opened his mouth, but didn't know what to say.
"Whoa!" Serena said. Her egg was glowing. The egg cracked to reveal a puppy-like creature.
"How'd that happen?" Zane asked, curiously.
"I just picked up my egg in one hand and my device in the other and it started to glow," Serena explained.
"That's what I did," Teruki chimed in. The group looked at him.
"Then, what did you get?" Zane asked.
Daisuke gasped when his egg lit up. A penguin creature appeared in front of him.
"More?" Teruki groaned.
Soon, the rest of the group had their own creature.
Midori got a plant-like creature. Keigo had a bird creature. Pedro got a little dragon creature. Timmy had a polar bear cub creature. Meiko got a badger-like creature. And Zane owned a insect-like creature.
Coronamon popped out from under the bed. "Hey, you guys," he said.
"Guys, meet Coronamon," Teruki said. "Hey, Terukimon, I can name all these Digimon by heart," Coronamon bragged. "That's Shinemon, Splashmon, Sproutmon, Petrelmon, Dramon, Frimon, Badgermon, and Sparkmon." The group stared at all of the creatures.
"So, what are you guys anyway?" Keigo asked.
"We're..." Coronamon said, as the creatures gathered in the center of the room. "Digimon, Digital Monsters!"
"Cute," Teruki commented sarcastically.
That afternoon, the teens had to sneak their Digimon over to their own houses, but eventually made it to a private part of the park. Zane called everyone to come to talk about something most of the group didn't understand. He was examining his device.
"These devices are very interesting," Zane remarked.
"Hey, nerd, stop fiddling with your DS and tell us what you called us here for," Daisuke said, sarcastically.
"Anyway, I wanted to tell you something about these Digimon," Zane explained.
"What do you mean by 'these Digimon'?" Coronamon said, defensively.
"Digimon have appeared before in the past," Zane stated. "In 2002, Shinjuku experienced an attack from several Digital Monsters." Everyone was listening attentively.
"But there were citizens of Shinjuku who had their own Digimon and fought the pursuing Digimon!
"These people were able to make their Digimon bigger somehow. And, get this, Digimon franchise were sold everywhere. There were toys, shows, playing cards, and everything Digimon related!" The others were wide eyed.
"So that's why there's a thin slot on our devices," Midori said.
Zane examined his device once again. "Whoa, I can't believe I just noticed that!" Zane remarked.
"So if we use a card, something will happen to the devices," Keigo said.
"Aw, I wanted that to be a credit card slot!" complained Midori.
"This is stupid," commented Daisuke.
"Hey, Timmy, come and listen!" Teruki yelled.
Timmy sat on a bench, looking worried.
"Yo, what's wrong?" Teruki asked him. Timmy looked away.
"I-I think I have some of those Digimon cards at home already," he said.
"WHAT!?" the others yelled. They ran to him.
Timmy turned towards the group. "I can go get them if you want," he offered.
Zane nodded. "That would be great," he said.
Timmy ran off to his apartment.
As he ran off the Digimon came out of the bushes.
"Hey, guys," Frimon said. "While Timmy's off getting the cards, let's play hide-and-seek!"
"Shinemon, don't you dare join 'em!" Serena ordered.
The Digimon disappeared in the bushes. The teens looked at each other... and sighed. The Tamers walked off in all directions
Teruki found Splashmon and Petrelmon under some shrubs.
Midori "accidentally" sat on Sproutmon when she "dropped" her purse.
Keigo ran after Dramon and Coronamon as they leaped from tree to tree.
Serena found Shinemon hidden among a pack of puppies as they sat by the park's fountain.
Sparkmon tried to scare off Zane by knocking down a beehive, but was attacked instead. When the puppies left the fountain, Frimon froze the water on the top section of it, and started to skate on the ice. People crowded around to see his moves on the ice. Then, Daisuke came to see what all the fuss was about. He had to get through the crowd and onto the ice to reach Frimon.
"Sorry, guys," Daisuke said. "It's just my crazy little brother, nothing to see here!" After, slipping, tripping and falling, Daisuke got Frimon.
"Badgermon!" Meiko called out. she ran over to Midori and Serena.
"Guys," she said, panicky. "I can't find Badgermon!"
Daisuke appeared carrying Frimon. "Don't worry," he said. "She's probably just fooling around, or hiding, like in a normal hide-and-seek game."
"MEIKO!" Badgermon called out to the group. They looked at each other.
"That's no ordinary cry," Teruki said.
The group and the Digimon ran towards the scream. They appeared at a deserted part of the park and looked around. BOOM!
Smoke filled the area. Several shadows lurked behind the smoke. It seemed that a gang was waiting for the Tamers. One of them held Badgermon. "So, you're the new tamers of Shinjuku," a guy said. Teruki nodded. "Then, you guys better move out of the area or give up your pledge as a tamer. Or, we could do that part for you."
"How do you know us?" Midori asked.
The teen chuckled. "We've been watching you for a long time now," he said. "Actually, only since you left the hospital." His gang laughed.
"Give back Meiko's Digimon," Teruki demanded.
The guy chuckled. "You want to get her Digimon back, huh," he said, gesturing behind himself. "I'll let Tina test a newbie like you." A blond girl stepped out from behind him. She took out a small device.
"Renamon, summon!" Tina said with a tone in her voice that sounded as if she was calling upon a great being. A yellow fox with purple gloves stood on its hind legs in front of Teruki.
Renamon, rookie Digimon. Her speed and agiltiy make it hard to predict when she strikes with her Diamond Storm attack.
"Hmph, you can't even call on your Digimon in battle." she scoffed.
Teruki forgot that he was in combat now. "Go, Coronamon," he ordered. Coronamon leapt in to the air. "Now what?" Coronamon asked.
Tina sighed. She turned on her device. A screen came up in front of her. She seemed to be writing something on the screen. "Doesn't know Digimon moves, doesn't call for Digimon in combat immediately," she murmured. "Renamon, Diamond Storm."
"DIAMOND STORM!" Hundreds of white diamonds shards flew at Coronamon.
"PETIT PROMINENCE!" Coronamon surrounded himself in fire, which absorbed all the attacks.
Tina looked stunned. "Digimon is stubborn and does not take orders from Tamer," she said aloud as she wrote it on her screen. "Power Paw, Renamon."
"POWER PAW!" "CORO PUNCH!"
The two Digimon lunged at each other with fists surrounded in energy. Renamon lunged again, but Coronamon slid under her and punched from behind. Renamon fell to the ground.
"Renamon, shame on you!" Tina said. She took a card from her pocket and and swiped it through the card slot in her device. "Digimodify!" Energy resonated out of the small device. "Digivolution, Activate!" A blinding light surrounded Renamon. "Renamon, digivolve to..." she said. The light faded.
"Kyubimon!" A nine-tailed fox with a rope around her neck and golden tails looked down on the two.
Kyubimon, champion Digimon. If you thought dodging diamonds was hard, wait 'til you try to have to dodge Kyubimon's Fox Tail Inferno.
"Blue fire, huh," Teruki scoffed. "Coronamon, show these show-offs the power of red fire!" "Corona Blaze!" A blast of fire shot from Coronamon’s head, rocketing at Kyubimon. She just stepped to the left to avoid the blast.
“Fox Tail Inferno!” The nine golden tails flourished and blasted ghostly blue fire. “Ahh!” Coronamon shouted. He fell to the ground. “Coronamon, are you alright?” Teruki asked. “I’m fine,” Coronamon replied. “What happened to Renamon?” Teruki asked. “She digivolved,” Coronamon replied. She used a card to do that! Teruki realized. Where’s Timmy?
“Petit Prominence!” Coronamon surrounded himself in fire and ran at Kyubimon. “Fox Tail Inferno!” Nine blue flames converged on Coronamon. “Ha,” Coronamon said satisfactorily. He gathered the flames on his fists. “Coro Punch!” He practically sent a blow with the force of a detonated bomb.
“Teruki!” Timmy called out. Teruki looked around. There was Timmy, with a pack of cards. He ran over to Teruki. “You’ll need these,” he said.
“Thanks,” Teruki replied. He searched the deck.
“Let’s see what this does,” he said. “Digimodify!” He swiped the card. “Adrenaline, activate?” he said dubiously.
“CORO PUNCH, CORO PUNCH!” Coronamon shouted. He kept punching Kyubimon, who became embedded into the ground. Coronamon lay on the ground, exhausted.
“Revitalize, activate,” Tina said. The bruises from Kyubimon’s body disappeared. “Dragon Wheel!” Kyubimon surrounded herself with blue flames. The shape of the flames looked like a dragon. Kyubimon lunged at Coronamon. He jumped out of the way, but left Teruki standing.
“HELP!” he shouted. His device was beeping rapidly.
Time was still. “Teruki, you have to know something about us Digimon,” Coronamon said. “We’re digital animals that fight; it’s in our data. You can’t change that. We all have to face this conflict one way or another. You can do this, right?” Teruki nodded. “Then, I pledge to you my service as a tamed Digimon,” Coronamon said. He knelt down. “Well?” he said. “Oh,” Teruki said. “I pledge my, uh, mastery to you, Coronamon,” he said, confused. Time started again.
“Coronamon, digivolve to…” he yelled. Light surrounded him. “FIRAMON!”
Firamon, champion Digimon. His Flame Dive is divine torture.
Firamon was a red lion, with golden hair, wings, and fire emitters on most parts of his body. “FLAME DIVE!” He flew up into the air. His fire emitters constantly did what they do. Firamon folded his wings and dove at Kyubimon. He was like a spiraling comet headed for the earth.
“AAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!” Kyubimon screamed. The battlefield exploded.
Kyubimon turned back into Renamon. Tina was stunned. “I’ll make an exception,” she groaned. “This isn’t the last of the Shinjuku Shadow Tamers.” She pulled out a smoke bomb and threw it at the ground. When it cleared, the gang was gone. Badgermon ran to Meiko.
“Oh, Badgermon, I was so worried,” she said. “Thanks, Teruki.”
He nodded, and then turned to the group. “Looks like we’re not the only Tamers in town,” he told the group. “Keep your eyes peeled.” Coronamon jumped on his back.
“Don’t worry guys,” he said. “Once you’ve made the pledge with your Digimon, like we did, your power and bond with your Tamer or Digimon will be unmatchable!”
“Yea!” the Digimon cheered. “
I think we’ve had enough excitement for one day,” Teruki said. “Let’s go home.”
Seth walked up the dark stairwell, bracing himself for his punishment.
He opened the door at the end of the stairs. Inside, an ominous-looking swivel chair was positioned at the end of the room. Its back was turned to Seth.
"I am very disappointed in you," the man growled. His Digimon served him a drink with its arm-like ears.
"I'm sorry, father," Seth apologized. "It won't happen again."
"Just wait 'till your mother hears this," said the man. "'Your son and his team lost against a fresh Tamer'." He sipped from his glass.
"She'll be…" he paused. "quite amazed."
"Our provocative move is underway!" Seth interrupted. "We're thinking about including one of these fresh Tamers."
"Only that one boy, Teruki," said the man. "is a Tamer. The others have uet to perform the pledge."
A screen popped up in front of the man.
Incoming Digital Fluctuation! Pledge Has Been Performed!
"No!" the man roared, pounding the sidearm. "Seth Oriouda Wong, stop them from performing the pledge immediately!"
