The Devolution of the internet.

The thing is it's not that I don't think they should be used, I just think that it would be easier to have a proper conversation with someone if they didn't keep blurting out random memes and slang, there's a time and a place.

I'm fully aware that it won't change. In fact, it's only being promoted further lately.

But, I felt the need to speak my mind about this "cancer" of sorts. Recently It's been out of control lately on my end, that's all.

Just because it is there doesn't mean you need to read it. If you don't like seeing internet terms uses don't read them or stay off the internet.

It isn't going to change just because people don't like seeing them.

I don't like repeating myself, so I'm just going to quote this post for many others with similar replies.

Thanks for the responses, everyone. Many of what was mentioned is what I fully agree with. It's fine and dandy if the person makes use of them from time to time, but revolving around such lingo and using them is what I could only assume as a sad attempt to fit in, or seem "witty". However, I don't particularly mind chat speak either as another poster mentioned - as long as it's not some indecipherable gibberish, I'm fine with it. It's mostly the overuse of nonsense memes that can ruin what may have been a decent conversation.

I'm going to agree with you because I'm cool, original and want to look like I have a giant E-peen.

Once upon a time, the Internet was invented. This allowed us to have wonderful discussions with people all over the world from all sorts of backgrounds, from the comfort of our own home.

Then many of us we realized we didn't like being intellectual that much after all, and went back to being small-minded twats like all humans really are at their core.

The end.

I remember when there wasn't much in terms of meme's, ect. Times sure do change! I guess it depends on the forums you frequent too. Some I go to have pretty normal discussions without all the memes'. Oh well, you can't fix other people. Might as well just enjoy yourself. :)

What ruined the internet?

1. abundance of forum mods/chat ops
2. memes
3. "online social life"

It continues to amaze me how hard being authentic on the internet apparently is. I was almost going to make a topic myself, but then I found this. =)

But yes, what communities you join means a lot. There are completely constructive and troll-free forums out there.

I don't think anything different is going on with language because of the internet, except that its evolution is happening at the speed of light. I'll give you an example to show that nothing is different: Nobody can understand Shakespeare's plays if they didn't come with annotations. His plays were crammed with pop culture language. Sorry to bump a month-old thread but I have to put in my two cents about this.

You didn't bump it, you were two days too soon to do that.

There has always been an Internet culture, it's not something 4chan invented. Also if you ventured out to the rest of the Internet, e.g. what's not made up nerdy websites, you would probably find radically different individuals.

I agree, anymore, people think that the internet was made strictly to troll people and spam memes to the point where you just want to shoot the awesome smiley every time you see it.

Before that, people thought the internet was made solely for porn, and before that, the internet was actually a very pleasant place with no memes or trolls whatsoever. And then came the hackers and obsessive freaks, who brought forth chaos to the internet.

Really, the internet has become nothing but a bunch of people who think that they are better than the rest of the world and have the need to think that people complaining about things they do not like is supposibly "funny" and "hillarious", seriously, what has the internet become, nothing but a bunch of cyberbullying, it's no longer about making friends, instead, it has become about making enemies and bullying other people and hacking websites simply for people to get their way, it's horrible anymore, you can't go anywhere without getting glamed on simply because you have a medical condition, or are gay, or do not like that anime everyone else likes, it's a nightmare.

On the subject of memes, they start out good, but then they just simply get old, wait about three years or so, and people will get tired and stop spamming a meme to no end, and then someone makes another meme, people get obsessed with that and spam it to no end, and another three years pass, and they get tired of that meme, and the cycle repeats.

Well as someone who has been on the internet from almost the beginning (clarification: Since AOL made its debut). People have been acting/ talking stupid since this went public! I think the view that things have devolved is a bit backwards. The Internet & chats have actually developed it's own vocab, and according to the sight's you frequent that language has a linguistic dialect all it's own. Take LOLcats/dogs.That is a very specific age mannerism... childish. It however fits that region of the web. However, Adult forums have their own way of speaking, as does gamer forums. So to say the web is devolving I think misses that, as a culture, the web has actually evolved into regional dialects. Of course that's my spin.

The internet is far from ruined. Instead, it's evolving into a far less social place, thanks to memes and commercialization.

Soon, it will merely be a buisiness tool, thanks to the eventual critical mass of annoying memes driving everyone off, and a possible worldwide crackdown on internet porn. Soon, the 'tards will get off the net, and the trolls will go away.

P.S: Does this post seem quite unclear? Good, that's my intention if it was.
"I intended to make my post unclear." Because...?

Anyway you should consider going to better forums, there are a lot of places where what you describe doesn't happen. If you meet people from a place where it does happen then generally speaking it's going to mean they bring up things that you dislike for some arbitrary reason in conversation.

Ever considered that maybe you're overreacting a little bit to something that really has no impact on your life in the long run?
