The Devolution of the internet.

I'm not sure if this is in the right section of Miscellaneous. Feel free to move this thread if it isn't. The title of this thread might also be somewhat misleading, I suppose.

I'm the kind of person who does more communication over the internet compared to real life. This is mostly due to living in a barren country that's in desperate need of a blood transfusion (The Bahamas). So, I figured perhaps a more effective way of meeting people would be browsing around various forums and websites of my interests. There's a problem, though...

...I can't help but feel somewhat irritated at the sheer lack of originality in the users of it. By originality, I mean diversity in their method of speech, that is.

What I'm trying to say is, or ask at least - does it bore or possibly even irritate you when you're having a conversation with somebody and they just slap a bunch of random "memes" or lingo in most of their sentences? God forbid if it's emoticon spam too. I may be guilty of emotes or some of said "memes" from time to time, but definitely not in such excess with some of the friends I've known in cyberspace. On the rare occasions I do such things, it tends to fit the situation.

I'm one of those persons who don't exactly have the best tolerance for conformists. I don't expect everyone to lead, or be a radical departure from everyone else, but the "followers" are being seen everywhere and I wholeheartedly feel that the internet is heading backwards with the English-speaking user base (possibly multicultural as well) whom actively partake in this...method of "speech". It's fine in some cases, but talking to people who revolve around it couldn't get any more annoying. No, I don't have a stick up my rear end, It's just makes for a very bland person to communicate with from my past experiences.

I'm aware that people on the internet are usually different from their real life persona. This may be overgeneralizing as well, but is it really this fun to use phrases which are rarely even humorous? Was it really a cool story, bro - despite it not being a story? Were you really "disappoint" with me, father? No, I don't like Mudkips, thanks. The list goes on and on...

So yes, inevitable trolls; "I mad". I don't need that spammed multiple times in chat even after describing the situation, though. I feel that the internet may need a blood transfusion as well in the quality of it's users.

P.S: Does this post seem quite unclear? Good, that's my intention if it was. If it's too long; don't read it, I guess.

Actually I do understand you, things around the internet are completely different from the world.

Meeting people such as here is probably easier then in real life, shyness could be a factor in that.

Oh goodness I have seen that many times. It does become an eye sore, but some people do like posting that kind of stuff.

wow you're sad......

are you perhaps overweight or depressed?

how autistic are you

Seriously guys? He was speaking his mind.

Honestly, you're looking into this too much. The Internet is indeed prone to "devolution," but:

a. It's operated by humans.
b. Humans are prone to taking the easy way out.

I actually legitimately have fun "enduring" memetic mutation and inside jokes. I think that, in this case, you need to loosen up a little and give up this fight. This won't just change just because you don't like it.

Or, to put it in simpler terms:

Are we not men?
WE ARE DEVO!
Are we not men?
D-E-V-O!

Speaking one's mind isn't always a good thing. Go outside and get some exercise

This could apply just as well to you.

I'm fully aware that it won't change. In fact, it's only being promoted further lately.

But, I felt the need to speak my mind about this "cancer" of sorts. Recently It's been out of control lately on my end, that's all.

I regularly visit the local gym and take good pride in my physical health, actually.

Thanks for the suggestion and advice.

Well done. I didn't say he couldn't n00b, I said it's not always a good thing.

Why not? You seem to have opened your mouth at an inappropriate time.

Obvious troll is obvious.
And you call me sad? You're the troll here.

You're not a troll, but you continue to chastise and attempt to annoy me?
Thats funny, that like, exactly what trolls do.

I pity the trolls, so I feed them nice, warm, juicy banter. Plumps them up for the winter.

Oh no, what will we do without our serebii! *shock horror*
This has such a huge impact on my life, I think I might go jump a bridge now.

I'm actually loling so hard, you're a comedy genius. Bravo.

I also love your inefficient way of avoiding the swear filter, very inventive.

I agree ever so much. I don't understand how someone saying 'Cool story, bro' can send anyone laughing. Its not funny. Neither is the person who said it.

how autistic are you
When you said this, I laughed. Just because some jokes aren't funny, doesn't mean someone is autistic.

I agree if it's constant somewhat but then again, jokes and memes are usually harmless so I don't really mind. Mainly as I do it too, I play too many video games and can't help it! I love to laugh!

Of course people are different on the internet than in reality, because on the internet you're anonymous. So if someone wants to post as a troll or smart arse, let them and leave them be. Pack up your things and take your business elsewhere, haha!

cool story bro thats some nice copypasta i laughed over 9000 times 8/10

Memes are nothing more than an in-joke on the internet. They come and they go, but I'd not say that they were a product of unoriginality, rather just a desire to fit in.

In the end the reason comes down to laziness, from a lot of people, but with the amount of people on the internet, perhaps it's simply to do with your chosen location for socialising? There are forums out there for intelligent people who won't partake in those habits which you hate.

Shouldn't the don't read warning be at the start of the post?

I like memes, but spamming them guarantees getting laid. It's true.

Anyway, the 'u mad bro' or the 'kewl story bro' is annoying; it displays a lack of thought in conjuring up insults and I've come to associate these phrases with arrogance, sheep-mindedness and childish one-up mentality.

I fear for the English language too. i r u y n are letters, not words.

Personally, I think its because people can go to the internet and feel that they won't be judged, and if they are, it doesn't matter because your probably never going to meet them.
So, as someone said, it's basically a place for some downtime and "relaxation" for most. then again, minority spoil for majority.

Of course, you also get people who insist on using said internet lingo in real life conversations and in writing, which is more annoying?

In my experiences, the use of memes varies from each forum. There's probably an alternative forum suited to your interests that doesn't include a bunch of trolls/random people spamming memes all of the time.

Like others said, it's probably just a desire to fit in, and some people actually do think memes are funny. Even so, I don't think the internet is in need of a "blood transfusion". The opinions and preferences of those using the internet aren't likely to be changed very easily, and harmless things like memes, trolls, and conformists can just be ignored. Although trolls aren't always harmless.

I agree with the OP a little, but let people have their fun, its not like a meme is hurting anyone. I don't really laugh at memes though, although if I saw a use of Sho Minaminoto's "zetta slow" meme (not that well known), I might chuckle a bit, just because that character is awesome.

You said it yourself

don't read it, I guess.

Just because it is there doesn't mean you need to read it. If you don't like seeing internet terms uses don't read them or stay off the internet.

It isn't going to change just because people don't like seeing them.
