• Hi all
Just a notice, we recently discovered that someone got into a moderator account and started hard deleting a load of key and legacy threads...around 150 threads have been lost dating back to 2007 and some weeks ago so we can't roll the forums back.
Luckily no personal data could be accessed by this moderator, and we've altered the permissions so hard deleting isn't possible in the future
Sorry for any inconvenience with this and sorry for any lost posts.

Welcome to the brand-new Fan Fiction club! (Now endorsed by Fishy Ink.) Whether you hide in dungeons composing grand tales based on a fandom, or even just read them, then this is the place for you! (Yes, you, in front of the computer screen).

Here, you can discuss anything to do with Fan Fiction, or writing in general - plot, characters used, writing styles, and which Pokemon you use in your fics - or take up a writing challenge, or impose a deadline on yourself in your writing projects, which the other members can then 'kindly' remind you about.

This is the fifth version of such a club - Buraddo Aipom, the owner of the previous one has granted permission for a remake. First off, a list of the previous four versions - let's make number 5 the best!

Fan Fiction Club Rules
For they're just that awesome.

  • All Forum rules and Club Forum rules apply.
  • To join, you have to have some sort of interest in Fan Fiction (Otherwise, what are you doing here?) Whether you write it, or just read it, etc, doesn't matter.
  • No advertising allowed of your fics. The exception to this is when you first post here to join, in which you can mention and link to your fanfics - but after that, no linking, please. You are also allowed to mention in posts that you have updated your fic, without links, but don't just post to say you updated - include it with something else as well, such as a response to a topic. (As that goes against the one-liner club rule).
  • No reviews or criticism (constructive or not) of fics here, please - that's what their fic thread is for. You can talk about fics, but reviews go there.
  • If there is a new, active topic (less than a day old minimum), than please refrain from making a new topic - no need to have several running around at the same time. Otherwise, go ahead and make one!
  • Respect others - don't knock down other people's beliefs, whatever it may be. Everyone is equal here.
  • If you wish for a 'deadline', simply post requesting one here (remember the no-one-liner Club rule, however). Same goes for reminding others about their deadlines - post it with something else (e.g. reply to a topic), or do it outside of this thread.

To become a member

If you want to become a member - just ask in the thread! As long as you have an interest in it, you're welcome. When joining, please mention what is your interest with fan fiction/writing, and feel free to mention any fics you have made as well. You can also mention your favourite authors, books, yourself, whatever you like (as long as it's relevant).

Random Writing Challenges!

Every so often there'll be a writing challenge for you to do, if you wish. A record for those who have succeeded will be kept. Post it here once completed - unless you write enough and wish to post in the Fanfiction Section, in which case, link to it here. Feel free to do any previous challenges as well.

Judging process currently ongoing of the FANFICTION POKEMON POV CONTEST!

Previous challenges:
Write a scene of a cookout/barbeque being prepared or attended by some Gym Leaders and their Pokemon.

People who did it:
The Dozen Red Roses Challenge - make as any reviews as you can on Valentines' Day!

People who did it:
  • bobandbill - 6 reviews
  • Giratina! - 12 reviews
Dream-Eating Drowzee - Pick a character, any one you own, with an at least somewhat unpleasant past. Now imagine they're locked in a room with a particularly malevolent Drowzee, who is in the process of using Dream Eater to dig up their worst nightmares. What do they see?
Deadlines

If you wish to request a deadline - a date for you to complete a review/beta/chapter/story by then, then simply ask for one here, and it'll be added to the first post! This is for those authors who want to keep to a schedule. But beware - if you take one, and fail to complete it... well, other members may shout at you about it. Kindly, of course. >:] Of course even just getting part of your aim done due to the deadline is better than nothing!

Please shout at remind people nearing their deadline/failing to complete within a post (i.e. don't just post that - include it with a reply to a topic, for instance), or VM them.

Current:

SerenadeSP - Finish writing Chapter 7 of Heroic Potential before the end of April

bobandbill - 23rd Janurary - write out a chapter of TRoPC.

Toastedbagel - Aim is to finish the second chapter of "On The Road" by March 7th

Blackjack Gabbiani - Aim is to finish Obsession 20 by the 30th of November.

Ysavvryl - Aim is to finish a Halloween story by the 20th of October - COMPLETED.

bobandbill - Aim is to complete the next chapter of 'The Retelling of Pokemon Colosseum' by September 20th - COMPLETED.

Mimori Kiryu - Aim is to complete a 'secret project' by September 1st - COMPLETED.

purple_drake - Aim is to finish 'The mighty fallen' by August 31st.

SlowCrow - Aim is to write the rough draft for the rewritten prologue for Bug III by August 22nd.

Breezy - Aim is to finish reviews for the HG/SS One-shot contest by August 9th - COMPLETED

And that's all!

I SHALL BE THE FIRST. \o/

I ... don't think I'll bother linking my fics, one because I'm lazy and two because they're already in my signature anyway. XD

EDIT x2: I also feel like an idiot, because for whatever reason I did not actually see the part that says what to post in your initial post. Blind, Pur is blind.

Mainly my interest is in the writing (mostly Pokemon, with a boatload of other fandoms; too many to get into), but I enjoy reviewing too, when I have the energy to do so. I don't read as many fics as I should (aside from for reviewing purposes) because my perception of the Pokemon fandom tends to be fairly specific, and not many people seem to write about the characters I'd like to read about.

My main literary inspiration's probably Tolkien, though I've recently read a number of Ursula Le Guin's essays on the nature of science fiction and fantasy, so I'd count her too, even though I've never actually read any of her fiction. Yet.

If procrastination strikes, what do you do to overcome it?

Well! It depends on what the procrastination is about, really. Recently I discovered that getting out of the house does wonders for my motivation to write; without my laptop in front of me I don't get distracted by games and whatnot, and without being at home it means I'm not comfortable enough with my surroundings to just ... fall asleep or something.

Mostly I go to cafes; Gloria Jeans, an Aussie coffeeshop, is my favourite 'cos they make good hot chocolate. Otherwise, there's an all-night petrol station/Subway/coffeeshop less than twenty minutes walk from my house, so I go there every day to write for an hour. Yay, the JKR method of writing. XD

I'm still having trouble on the editing part, though. Since I handwrite most of my stories now, I need to get up the motivation to type it all up (and my handwriting is terrible, so that doesn't help). Then I need to edit it properly; since, while I'm handwriting, I'm not concerned with the finer details as much as getting it all down on paper, with the expectation that the fine-tuning will happen as I type it up, it usually means there's tons of plot-holes and usually some extra research that needs to be done at that point. And so it is all the more daunting.

I should have someone give me deadlines. That seems to work.

EDIT: Actually, that may not be a bad idea; may as well use the Club for something other than discussion (not that that's bad or anything). So, could we do that? Say if someone needs motivation to write/edit/whatever stage they're at something, they could post a deadline in the Club of what they need done, keep a record in the first post, so when the deadline approaches the other members can jump on them about it.

GARRR!!!!

I'll join! Why not? I write fanfiction, I read fanfiction... might as well have a good place place to discuss the darn thing.

Procrastination, I believe, can be fixed by getting off your arse and starting writing!!!!! Sit yourself in front of that computer screen until you write words, any words will do! That and having a nice cup of tea by the side of your computer to get those synapses firing!

*raises hand* I'll join! And man, didn't notice BA did another fanfic club thread. *_*

Well, I write and review Pokemon fanfics. The list you can find in my Author's Profile. :p I recently finished my most ambitious chaptered project, Nothing, Everything, basically a Pokemonized version of Da Vinci Code. I'm taking a bit of a break from writing now because NE wore me down. XD; I'm still reviewing full force though, especially with me judging for the Heart and Soul contest.

I do read fics from other fandoms too, mostly Naruto and Ouran High School Host Club. The only fic I wrote that's not Pokemon however is this very short Naruto one shot called Clay Puppet, which is basically something inspired from one part of the Dark Knight movie. XD Would love to do another Naruto one shot, but no ideas at the moment. I have an idea for a short Naruto chapter fic actually, but I don't think I'll be able to have time to write it and also some plot holes I need to go over and try to fix :x

If procrastination strikes, what do you do to overcome it?

Most of the time either read another story or read what I have written on my story so far to get me inspired to write again, basically.

And purple drake, that's not such a bad idea, actually. Might need that deadline so that I can get writing this one shot for the Heart and Soul entrants to be occupied with while I get the reviews done. XD

Ooh! Shiny fanfiction community! Hello, there! I do a bit of both (reviewing and writing, that is), but at the moment, I'm focusing on my reviewing, in part to get back into it. A list of my writing is currently located here, but some of it will eventually leak onto SPPf once I get a bit more into the community. It's mostly Pokémon work (because that's my comfort fandom), but I'm trying to branch out into other fandoms. Just need to get a better feel for them, you know?

Also, in terms of favorite authors and whatnot, Neil Gaiman is my god.

If procrastination strikes, what do you do to overcome it?

Pfft. This is assuming I actually get over it.

Seriously, I'm pretty much in the same boat as purple_drake right there. With my computer, I don't write much because I get distracted by shiny objects. Without, I've seriously written an entire, thirteen-page chapter in a single sitting. So, the first thing I do is take a long walk with a pen and notebook. The walk's good too. It helps me clear my mind of all the other random thoughts and focus on the story/whatever I've yet to finish. Then, eventually, I reach some form of destination (parks, the library, the on-campus cafe... whatever), sit down, and just write.

It also helps to keep reminding myself that I need to get something done. For example, I've written about half of a chapter of a fanfic I'm currently working on just by saying to myself last night, "Well, uh, I've only posted one chapter of this fic this month, so."

I second this idea. Oh, what I could do if I could just stare at the deadline and go, "Yeah, this is going to bite if I put it off any longer."

Whoa, whoa, whoa! A new FF club?! Why wasn't I informed? I wanna rejoin again, mebbe... Sure, yes.

And uh, let's see... This is an example of my work, and Stephen King being my fave author.

If procrastination strikes, what do you do to overcome it?

Ah yes, the sweet delight of being lazy... Usually, I only get my writing mojo back whenever I see a good movie (The first Gurren Lagann movie is a big one that snapped me back after my break) or even after reading a nice book or comic.

Really, I just need to get inspired to get back to writing, though often, it's more or less I need a good laugh to back in.

Ysavvryl

I would like to rejoin too. I write, read, and review fanfiction. Most of the time, I try to keep links in my sig, so that's where you'll find whatever I'm actively updating. Favorite author... I've got lots, but Terry Pratchett stands out at the moment.

As for procrastinating, well, I make myself write a certain amount every day. It's become such a habit that if I don't write something, I get nervous and start typing on a non-existant keyboard. Heh...

I do have a problem with getting distracted by a new story idea when I'm supposed to be editing/working on another piece. I try to set myself limits, by saying I can only write this much on the new story before I have to work on the next chapter of the older one. Sometimes it works, sometimes it don't.

That deadline idea sounds like a good one. Ever hear of Write Or Die? I haven't been able to use it myself (dumb computer), but that's apparently helpful. It should be on the internet somewhere...

As for the topic:

If procrastination strikes, what do you do to overcome it?

I don;t Usually, eventually, I will deliberatly switch off my internet, close other distracting programs, and just sit down and write. Either that, or think out the whole chapter in my head/on paper first, slowly but surely, and then go for a mass typing spree. Afterwards I tend to have a fiar bit of cleaning up to do though... music also seems to help at times, I find.

My main problem though is finding time for it though, which I haven't had too much of - probably having my longest delay to date now. *shakes fist at school, enemy number 1*
I should have someone give me deadlines. That seems to work.

I do declare this to be a smashing idea! Others agree as well... so consider it implememented. If you want a deadline, merely post away, and it'll be updated to the first post. Close to the deadline (say, within a few days), you may go and spam remind the person about it (either here as part of a post - Club no-one-liner-rule, yo, or via VMs). And if they fail it, spam some more, I suppose. >:]

Any think there should be changes to this?

I'd like to rejoin, even though I'm not really writing anything at the moment. I have four ongoing fics, technically, a general one-shot/writing-exercise thread which rots away in the bowels of that Non-Pokemon fics nether-region, but all of them are pretty much stagnant, though only one of them is incurably Author's-blocked. The others...one's undergoing a stagnant redux, the other a proposed restructure and the third probably doesn't have a lot of potential to mature to anything. A sixth one came in the form of a disqualified HGSS one-shot entry, which at least got me back into writing.

Ah well, I have a fifth one in planning :B

So yeah; joinage please :]

If procrastination strikes, what do you do to overcome it?

I live with it, I guess, or I just give up. Last year's NaNoWriMo was good in that it set daily deadlines, even though it was a bit of an overkill (1600+ words a day o___o;; ) so it wasn't that successful for me in that respect. As of yet, procrastination is a hard habit to wear off, and one that doesn't come off easily.

I was reading My NaNoWriMo entry the other day.

All seven pages of it! Yeah, I kinda got derailed and stopped about four days in. It was fun though, very Russian, and very apocalyptic!

Don't think I'll be up to it this november, unless I unofficially make the journey fic that I'm writing as the subject and use all november to speed up the progress.

If procrastination strikes, what do you do to overcome it?
Uhh... come to think of it, I guess I don't XD That would probably be why I've been planning for over a year and not gotten much written. Will be paying attention to other answers to this question...

I HAD NOT BUT NOW I HAVE and I have bookmarked it. XD Scary, but useful--but that's probably the point.

Indeed you are. Feel proud!

I've read some of her essays as well, actually. Her fictions are quite good as well.

I am, I am! 8D

*nodnod* They're really interesting, especially because they completely justify and vindicate fantasy and fiction. I've been using them as a resource for my thesis, which touches on that subject--the nature of fantasy writing/its uses, etc.

'The left hand of darkness' was used in one of my uni classes--as an excerpt, at any rate--and between that and having read one of her self-critiquing essays on it it's made me really interested in that one especially. He-shes FTW. XD

Yay! In that case I submit that I'll finish editing 'The mighty fallen' by August 31.

Though I do ask: can deadlines be submitted on their own, or do they have to be in a post as well?

Last year's NaNoWriMo was good in that it set daily deadlines, even though it was a bit of an overkill (1600+ words a day o___o;; )

I dunno ... my average is about 1100-1300 words in an hour, and that's a regular thing. Another 400 words or so a day doesn't seem like much. Maybe you just need to figure out what your motivation is? As in, when you do write steadily, what is it that enables you to do so? Setting, atmosphere, music? And then see if you can emulate it?

Don't think I'll be up to it this november, unless I unofficially make the journey fic that I'm writing as the subject and use all november to speed up the progress.

I was planning to do that with the creative part of my thesis. XD Even though that part is only meant to be, y'know, 10,000 words and not 50,000 ... but hey, it's a story, so I figure I'll be able to use the extra word count for when I continue writing it.

Ooh, Fanfiction Club. May I join?

I'm interested in writing, and I've posted a one-shot (don't like it...), submitted one to the Johto Contest, and I've planned a myriad of fics. The only one I'm going through with is being advertised in my signature right now.

I also read a lot of Fanfiction. I don't tend to review however, because I'm not too good at it. Like, if you look at my reviews in BA's thread, they... suck. But when Vycksta asked for concrit on one of her fics, and I did pretty well at it. It's something I need to improve on.

My favorite authors... J.K. Rowling, Lemony Snicket, Cinda Williams Chima, Alexander Dumas, and tons more. I read a lot. Not as much as I used to, unfortunately, but i read more than the average person.

If procrastination strikes, what do you do to overcome it?

... I'm insanely bad at overcoming procrastination. I'm still working on a way to overcome it. In fact, in a non-fic related way, I'm procrastinating right now... Usually a deadline helps me work harder.

So I'm joining because bnb forced me to. =P

I'm DM, and currently I have Stars and Perish as my projects. That's about all you need to know. x_x

If procrastination strikes, what do you do to overcome it?

I sometimes set aside an hour of what's left of my free time to just write. Even though I don't get it done, it's still something. x_x

Yay! In that case I submit that I'll finish editing 'The mighty fallen' by August 31.

Though I do ask: can deadlines be submitted on their own, or do they have to be in a post as well?
Updated to the first post. As for the question... not quite following - if you mean the deadlines themselves, they can be submitted either here or outside of this thread, I suppose, and if you mean confirmation of passing it - just a note/message one way or another as well would do, really. But clarification for slow people is nice. =P

IDK if I will do a NaNoWriMo, although this time around I would have some sort of time for it - well, mostly. My final high school exam is the 4th of November so I could always go for a late start and celebrate free time. =D Maybe though I'd just use it as an excuse to make decent progress on my main fic.

Oh, and let's have a new topic, because we can.

What is the setting for your fic/s place-wise, and time-wise - past, 'present' or future?

Yeah, I'm lazy atm, so I'll again answer this later. =P

What is the setting for your fic/s place-wise, and time-wise - past, 'present' or future?
NE takes place in Sinnoh, place wise. Time wise, the story's in the present, but happens not long after the incidents in the 10th and 11th Pokemon movies, considering the story uses both anime and game canon. I didn't say 12th Pokemon movie because NE is also a bit on the AU side and also didn't know the plates will be a huge factor in the movie. Long story short, consider the events of NE taking place after what happened in movies 10 and 11, but slightly before 12. :p
