This was a short 'teaser' fanfic I wrote in the heady days between when Gold and Silver were released in Japan and their release elsewhere. It was an exciting time and in anticipation, I wrote this short teaser. It doesn't really count as a proper fanfic, being very short, so I thought I'd post it here. All ye other authors out there, tell me what you think and feel free to use any ideas presented here in your own fics (just make sure you ask permission)

The First Sighting

Working at the Pokemon Centre was normally boring. When I started out here I thought I’d get to see and help all sorts of interesting creatures belonging to travelling trainers. But alas, no one seems to come through this out of the way location; no one but the local hobbyist trainers that is. The work was rewarding but dull and routine. Every day, I’d be dealing with the same groups of species: Weedle, Caterpie, Spearow and Geodude.

One or two trainers that came in regularly did manage to catch the elusive Clefairy and Jigglypuff, but their visits were few and far between. I had long settled into my routine by the time it happened; I’d started my day like so many others, dealing with the usual suspects when two trainers came in asking to use the trading facilities.

One of them, a local boy, had caught a Clefairy and had found a travelling hiker offering to trade an Onix for it. Now, an Onix for a Clefairy doesn’t seem like a fair trade to someone with my training, but an Onix around these parts is a pretty rare sight, and what’s more, the local gym leader Brock trains one. For a young boy from Pewter desperately wanting to emulate his hero, the opportunity to get an Onix was too good to pass up. Even for something as hard to come by as a Clefairy.

I had a quiet word with the hiker trying to cheat this boy out of his rare and valuable Clefairy. He was annoyed that someone might try to wreck his scam, but agreed to throw in a valuable item known as a metal coat if I’d stay quiet. Now, a metal coat is highly sought after, since it offers a boost in the power of some kinds of attack. The league rules had just recently changed, so the use of one item was now allowed in trainer battles. Since useful items like this one were often as hard to come by as Clefairy, I relented to the hiker and I allowed the trade once he’d given the item to his Onix to hold.

I started the machine and the transfer took place. As normal, once each pokemon was registered under their new trainer’s names, the mandatory inspection took place. For those of you unfamiliar with trades, League rules dictate that once a transfer has taken place, each trainer is required to inspect the pokemon they had just received. This rule was made almost a century ago to ensure that no impropriety took place in a trade. Nowadays though, what with computers controlling the whole process, this is just a quaint formality.

The hiker brought out his new Clefairy, followed by the boy with his new Onix. After the Onix came out, it began to happen. The boy’s new Onix began to glow white. I couldn’t believe it; I was seeing an Onix evolve! As I watched it grow longer and develop large spikes, I remember thinking that no one had ever observed an Onix evolve before. No one had ever thought it was possible; former League champions had trained them for crying out loud!

It grew and grew, nearly filling the room by the time it stopped glowing. The glow then turned into a silver sheen. All three of us, the boy, the hiker and myself stood there dumbstruck. It looked around the room for what seemed like an eternity before lifting its enourmous head to the ceiling. The pokemon that had been Onix let out a roar…

At least you have description. Better than what I just saw... You gave the location, a telling of the character's feelings, and physical description (a bit) of Steelix.

It sure was a teaser, because we didn't know much about Steelix back then.
