The GSC Monotype Challenge

Right, Poke suggested this in the chatroom, and seeing as it's already up in both RBY and in RS, its now coming here too. I expect alot of you will have seen the other topics if not taken part in them, but the rules will be repeated for the sake of those who haven't.

  • You play through either Gold, Silver or Crystal using Pokémon of only one Type (including Duel Types who must share the chosen type)
  • If your chosen starter is not of the type you picked, you are forbidden to use it until you catch a pokemon of your chosen type.
  • No matter how stuck you get you must not use any other types.
  • You are allowed to use only ONE set of TMs. This includes trading between other versions of GSC and also RBY.
  • You cannot trade between versions. As with TMs, you cannot trade a pokemon from RBY over. Trading for evolution is allowed (to get Machamp, Alakazam, Kingdra, Porygon2, etc.)
  • You may trade between GSC games, so long as you do so only when you reach the place said pokemon would naturally appear (ie you can't get a Skarmory until you reach Blackthorn, etc.)
  • After you pass certain events or feel the need to update, you may reply to the topic with details on how your progress is going, the status of your team, how hard it is, etc.
  • Ghost and Dragon teams should not be used due to lack of Pokémon
  • In the case of a Flying team, you are allowed ONE Legendary Bird OR Dragonite.
  • Celebi is forbidden from Psychic teams and Grass teams.
  • Aside from these rules, Lugia and Ho-oh are allowed in Psychic or Fire teams respectivly.
  • The challenge is considered complete upon reaching, and defeatong, of Red.

I wonder what Porygon will do

I'm thinking about doing a Water team.

Can I trade Eevee to Blue to evolve it to Vaporeon, so I don't miss all its good moves?

Considering I just restarted my a Gold Cart a few days ago and was working on a Fire team, I guess I'll do this.

So obviously, I chose Cyndaquil. I raised it against wild Pokemon until it learned Ember, at which point I burned through Bug Catchers, Sprout Tower, and Falkner. Before Union Cave, Cyndaquil evolved into Quilava, and this and the level advantage made taking down the Rock Pokemon a little easier.

By the time I got to Azalea Town, Team Rocket and Bugsy were no match for Quilava, who was leveled in it's late teens. I raised it to level 24 after my Rival's Croconaw gave it some trouble, but it won in the rematch.

I caught an Oddish as a Cut slave to get through the Ilex Forest, snuck past the next route's trainers so any new Pokemon I caught would have some chances for experience, and ditched the Oddish in the PC in case I needed it to Cut later. I skipped ahead to Route 35 and caught a male Growlithe, but I'm still looking for a female for breeding purposes.

By the way, are you allowed to use the breeding center for Level 5 babies in this challenge?

Trainer: JAZZ
Pokemon:
Hoppit the Quilava, Level 25
Growlithe, Level 13

Well, since I found a pokémon silver cart that I didn't even realise I still owned, with naff all data wise on it, I suppose this will be a good way to kill the weekend I'm stuck on holiday in a caravan (<sarcasm>yippe</sarcasm>)

Since I can't find a way to have a Bayleef and a Ledian in the same monotype team, I guess I'll use grass...yes the Elite 4 is going to slaughter me, but hey, it should be fun...

Like I mentioned quickly earlier, I'm going away on holiday on Thursday-Sunday, so I probably wont update until I get back, but anyway, may as well mention the progress I made today.

Simply picked Chikorita as a starter, and did the usual errand running sequence, raising it to level 11. Stats raising steadily and I am training up in the patches of grass near the dark cave, readying myself for Sprout tower. Hopefully, providing Chikorita has evolved by the time I get to the gym, I shouldn't have a problem.(It has been a good year or so since I've played, so I can't remember many names of the top of my head...after a weekend of playing, it will have all come flooding back, :p)

Taking the challenge up, I will try using Darkness as my type being fully aware that means it'll be me and Umbreon vs. the entire Elite Four.

This should be intersting.

Started off quickly snagging a Cyndaquil which should be able to get me through the game until I can make my way to Ecruteak and finally be able to get an Eevee. I also have a plan to grab a Ditto so I can make it Lv. 5 when I start, which may help slightly.

Beat Falkner with some difficulty, as I'm doing my best not to train Cyndaquil (he was Lv. 12 when I beat him). And am now heading South toward Bugsy.

I'll be starting a Grass Challenge in Crystal.

------------------------------------

Named my character Erika. i'm not a girl in real life, this is just so that getting a female starter is easy. I chose Chikorita, and named her Chik. I went to Mr. Pokemon's house, and Chik was at Level 8. I beat my rival with ease, and continued to Viloet City, where I caught a Bellsprout. I trained a lot, and Chik evolved. I am preparing for my battle against Falkner. Now I have:

Chik, Bayleef, Female, Level 16
Razor Leaf
Tackle
Reflect
Poison Powder

Venus, Bellsprout, Female, Level 14
Sleep Powder
Wrap
Growth
Vine Whip

Well, its been a few days and I'd like to say that my training hasn't not existed, no its flourished, friends. ^___^

I'll begin my post with the remainder of Day 1 (it was a very busy day).

I had embedded into my skull the absolute desire to get the Eevee so I could finally train it to become and Umbreon. So, I quickly plowed through all the Gyms taking great care not to defeat too many trainers so that my Eevee would have lots of easy experience when I finally get it. Finally make it to Goldenrod and headed straight for the gym. Whitney seemed especially difficult for my Quilava, but after a few good Smokescreens (and an X Special or two) I finally overtook her cow. Whitney's badge in hand, I practically ran to get the water can so I could get the Sudowoodo out of the way.

But before I did that, I decided that going the long way around (through Violet) was a better course of action (because there is Good experience that way too). So, going the long way, I reached and ran from the Sudowoodo, beat the Pokemaniac with his Drowzee and got to the Pokemon Center to finally meet up with Bill. He left and I once again go the long way to Goldenrod (when I get obsessed with something, I go all out ^_^;; ))

So, I got the Eevee, but me, being a bit on the perfectionistic side, decides I'd rather hatch a Lv. 5 Eevee from an egg. So, I go on a quick adventure, snag a Ditto, and leave the Eevee and Ditto what has got to be the longest wait ever. Seriously, I decided to go all the way to New Bark Town to show Prof. Elm the Togepi that hatched (going the long way again) returned and I still didn't get an Eevee egg. Then, at last, I got my Eevee and in that next instant taught him Headbutt.

With my new baby Eevee I went on a quest to seek out all the trainers I passed up and began leveling him up (which was surprisingly easy). By the end of the day I had defeated almost all the trainers that were accessable and evolved Eevee into Umbreon at Lv. 30.

Afterwards, I went to Morty's and whipped his sorry ***.

Done much since last update.

I beat Falkner, it actually was quite easy. I used Chik against Pidgey, who she beat with ease. I started out with Venus, but to my dismay, was knocked out. I used Chik to finish the stupid lout off. I got Togepi's egg, whcih I immediately deposited in my PC. I continued on to Azalea Town, and by then I had trained so much, that Venus was at Level 20, and Chik Level 21. I tried to beat Bugsy, but was unsucsessful the first time. I tried again, and beat him, by the chance of a lucky critical hit tackle on Scyther. I also beat my rival, who was pretty hard with a Quilava, but I made it through. Venus evolved after this battle.

Chik Level 25
- Reflect
- Synthesis
- Razor Leaf
- Tackle

Venus Level 23
- Acid
- Vine Whip
- Sleep Powder
- Growth

I found this thread last wednesday and thought it was a cool idea, something new you know? So I picked dark as my poison cause I'm in love with tyranitar and umbreon. I picked cydaquil as my starter to get through Whitney, which he did without too much of a problem (damn rollout). He was 25 at the time I got Eevee from Bill and I proceeded to breed it with a ditto to get a level 5. After I got him, it took a little bit for Eevee to evolve (tried to at 27, but I made it hold off until 30 for bite and confuse ray). After that I pretty much raped all the gyms in Johto. I went into the Elite Four at level 62 and pretty much dominated them (Kage's health only dropped into the yellow twice, when Machamp managed to get through confuse and cross chop him). After beating the Elite Four, I decided to try to beat Ash with only Kage and not the other four dark pokemon. Currently Kage's level 75 with only three gyms left to beat/own in Kanto before heading over to Mt. Silver. I'll post again after I've tried and/or defeaten Ash. Wish me luck.

Ok, so after I posted yesterday I finished up the with the remaining gyms in Kanto, rode my bike down to see Prof. Oak, then went over to Mt. Silver. Kage was level 80 at this point, having defeated every trainer in Kanto. I made my way down to the room with Ash with Kage and a level 5 togepi as a flash *****. I saved and proceeded to fight Ash. Here's the breakdown:
Pikachu - Confused it and used return until it fainted, never hit me
Snorlax - Confused it and used a mix of faint attack and return, hit me with a body slam doing around 50 or so damage
Venusaur - Again, confused it and started using psychic, it managed to get off a sunny day and solarbeam before I fainted it
Charizard - Broke through confusion and got a critical hit flamethrower out while sunny day was still active, left Kage with 41 hp out of 294. Yikes! A full restore or two and a couple returns later it was gone.
Blastoise - Apparently Ash's pokemon are resistant to confuse or something, cause blastoise got a rain dance and surf out before it fainted.
Espeon - Rape
So now I have a level 81 umbreon and no one really left to fightthat I haven't fought already. I'm thinking I may just keep fighting the Elite Four and Ash over and over to get him up to 100, seeing as how I've never had a pokemon get to level 100 before. Good luck to anyone still working on their monotypes.

This might be interesting, I'll start a Flying challenge.
_________________________________________________
I chose Cydaquil as my starter and headed to Mr.Pokemon's house. After getting the Mystery Egg and Pokedex, I headed back to Prof Elm. I was challenged by my rival, and gave the egg to Elm. After recieving some Pokeballs, I decided to catch a flying type. After walking around a bit, I encountered a Pidgey level 5. I captured her and named her Wing. After placing Cyndaquil into the box I trained her to level 7, saved and waited for night to come. After darkness fell, I searched for Hoothoot, which I found and caught rather quickly. My new Hoothoot who I named Talon, Wing, and I headed to Sprout Tower to train.I easily defeated the two gym leaders and I am now training to battle my rival.

Team:

-Egg (Togepi)

-Wing Lvl 18 (f)
Gust
Sand Attack
Tackle
Quick Attack

-Talon lvl 18 (m)
Peck
Tackle
Foresight
Hypnosis

Are HM slaves allowed? If so I'll be using a Bug team on my Japanese version of Silver.

If its like the others then yeah, HM slaves are allowed.

Well, here's an update...
______________________________
I placed Togepi into the PC and went searching for the flying type that can defeat rock/ground types. I know I don't need it at this point but I decided to catch one anyway. After a bit of searching, I found a Hoppip and captured her. After naming her Leaf, I trained my team up a level, and my Hoppip up to level 17.With my team of Hoppip, Hoot-Hoot, and Pidgeotto, I headed to Goldenrod for some more training.

Team:
Hoppip:Leaf Level:17 (F)
Tackle
Stun Spore
Synthesis
Sleep Powder

Pidgeotto: Wing Lvl 19 (f)
Gust
Sand Attack
Tackle
Quick Attack

Hoothoot: Talon lvl 19 (m)
Peck
Tackle
Foresight
Hypnosis

Update:
Well, since I don't want to take a risk of double posting, I'lmy update here. I went to the bug catching contest to try to find Scyther. After searching a bit, I found one. Skiploom's sleep powder, and 11 park balls finally caught it. I trained Scyther against the trainers of Goldenrod gym, and when facing Whitney used Fury Cutter and easily defeated her. I placed Skiploom and Pidgeotto within the box, deciding to train them later. Now, I withdraw Togepi and have decided to evolve it.

I just recently joined the forums like 2 days ago and that's when I noticed the thread. And seeing that I found my Silver cart again last week and restarted it then, I figured why not and restarted once more to do this challenge. I began Friday morning and after going through the process of choosing Totodile and getting it up to level 8 from going to get the egg and beating my rival, I decided to go with the Poison type (I really hadn't decided on what mono-type till this moment). So seeing that I'm going with Poison, I figured I'll wait until dark to catch Zubat, totally forgetting that Zubat aren't around routes 29, 30, or 31 at night in Silver. Basically wasted a whole day that I could've used to catch and train a Weedle. Whatever. Night falls and I sneak past 2 of the 3 trainers on route 30. Venture into Dark Cave and caught like 4 Zubat. Keeping the best two (one male, one female) for myself. Decided to train the male cause he had the better stats, even if every stat was exactly the same as the female save attack which was 1 point more.

Trained Zubat with the help of Totodile on wild 'mon from level 2 till level 6. Didn't deposit Totodile into box till Zubat got to level 8. Beat remaining trainers on Routes 30 and 31. Rested up before going into Sprout Tower to catch some Gastly, seeing how it was night already. Caught three level 3 Gastly, kept 2 (one male, one female). Decided to train the female because her special defense was higher by 1 point even though this was evened out by her 1 point lower defense. Trained Gastly till she was level 8 and then ran through the Tower with level 10 Zubat, level 8 Gastly. Relatively simple with Gastly beating down all the monks' Bellsprout with hypnosis and lick. Elder gave me trouble. At least his Hoothoot did. Had to use 5 potions on Zubat because Supersonic either didn't work or if it did, Hoothoot never hurt itself in the confusion. Stuck it out though and eventually won. Resting till morning so I can get Weedle. That way challenge Falkner with Zubat and Beedrill. Right now I'm just randomly training because I have no idea on EVs and what Pokemon give what EV values. Or which stats I should focus on the most for my team.

Current team:
L11 ;041; - Leech Life, Supersonic
L10 ;092; - Hypnosis, Lick, Spite

I'm bored and I have nothing better to do. So I'm writing my entries in the style of Pokemon Adventures summaries from Pokespecial, and at the end of each entry including info in the style of Coronis' character bios (except including my Pokemon's attacks also).

Round 1: Versus Chikorita

Characters involved: Almond, Mom, Professor Elm, Pistachio
Pokemon involved: Totodile, Chikorita, Weedle (Biiko), Kakuna, Ledyba (Retiko)

Almond, your average 10-year-old boy from New Bark Town, is sent on a mission by Professor Elm: To go to Mr. Pokemon and see what he emailed Elm about. Almond is given a Totodile to aid him in this quest. Outside of Elm laboratories, he sees a boy with long red hair peeking in a window, but when he tries to approach the boy, the boy pushes him away and yells, "Don't go poking into other people's business!"

Almond arrives at Mr. Pokemon's house north of Cherrywood City and receives a strange egg, as well as a Pokedex from Professor Oak, who's too much of a lazy bum to catalogue Pokemon himself. Almond sees this as a great opportunity to fulfill his dream of becoming the world's greatest Bug-type Pokemon Trainer (a dream, actually, which he just randomly made up on the spot) and returns toward New Bark with the egg after a phone call from a distressed Elm. On the way, though, he runs into the boy from before. Introducing himself as Pistachio, the boy challenges Almond to a Pokemon battle! After Almond's Totodile defeats his Chikorita, the boy leaves, saying he's going to become the world's greatest Pokemon Trainer.

Arriving back in New Bark, Almond finds out that that boy stole the Chikorita from Elm! After talking briefly with the police, he gives the egg to Elm, gets some Poke Balls from Elm's assistant, and sets off on his journey. He catches a Weedle and names it Biiko, and decides to release Totodile, as it isn't a Bug type. He trains and evolves Biiko into a Kakuna, and catches a Ledyba named Retiko also. No matter how hard he searches, though, he can't find a Spinarak anywhere. (Only later does he realise you can't get them in Silver.) After much battling of wild Pokemon, Almond comes to Violet City, location of the first Gym!

Pokedex completion level:
11 Pokemon seen
4 Pokemon owned

Pokemon in Almond's party:

Biiko (Kakuna) / Male / Level 9
Evolved from Weedle in Round 1: Versus Chikorita
Knows: Poison Sting / String Shot / Harden

Retiko (Ledyba) / Male / Level 10
Caught in Round 1: Versus Chikorita
Knows: Tackle / Supersonic

Pokemon Almond has had:

Biiko (Weedle)
Caught in Round 1: Versus Chikorita
Evolved into Kakuna in Round 1: Versus Chikorita

Totodile (Male)
Received from Professor Elm in Round 1: Versus Chikorita
Released in Round 1: Versus Chikorita

Update -
Caught a Weedle in the morning and then trained up my team till Weedle evolved into Beedrill at level 10, till Zubat learned Bite at level 12, and til Gastly reached level 11. Challenged Falkner and basically cleared through the gym using only Zubat with Bite. Headed through route 32, adding Ekans to my team along the way. Made it through Union Cave easily, almost as easily as I cleared out Team Rocket from Slowpoke Well. Afterwards, did some training in the Well getting my team stronger, Togepi hatching and being deposited in the box, till finally heading over to Azalea with my team at L13 Ekans, L14 Gastly, L14 Beedrill, and L16 Zubat.

Bugsy's Metapod and Kakuna were no challenge for my Ekans and Beedrill respectively. Scyther however Fury Cutter'ed through Beedrill then Gastly. Zubat was able to emerge victorious when Fury Cutter missed and I managed to confuse Scyther. Then I just bit my way to victory. Ran into rival leaving Azalea and beat him, even though his Zubat took out my Gastly. But it evened out when my L14 Ekans beat his L17 Bayleef with just Poison Sting. Got Cut and Charcoal and caught a Paras as a HM slave for Cut.

Waited till night so I could add Oddish to my team. Trained her up to L15 in the Slowpoke Well against Magikarp till she got strong enough to take on the Goldeen (because of Peck). Next, passed through Ilex Forest, grabbed Headbutt, and cleared through the trainers on route 34. Once in Goldenrod City, I picked up my free bike and the radio card before making my way to the name rater to give nicknames to my team. When I got that taken care of, went through the Underground Path and cleared it out. Also recored Bill's phone number. Next step is onto Whitney and the Normal-type gym.

Current team:
Buzz L16 (M) ;015;
-Poison Sting, Fury Attack, Focus Energy, Harden

Odelia L16 (F) ;043; @ Miracle Seed
-Absorb, Sweet Scent, Poison Powder, Stun Spore

Vipra L16 (F) ;023;
-Poison Sting, Bite, Leer, Wrap

Spectra L16 (F) ;092;
-Hypnosis, Lick, Curse, Mean Look

Echo L17 (M) ;041;
