WHERE IS PIDGEOT?!
i know this has probably been posted a few times already, but what do we ewant the gyms to be? i think there should be five islands - four have four gyms each, and the other will have something special on it, like the final challenge (elite4?). these are the gyms in my mind:

Island1 - downfall island
normal(get it out of the way)
flying
ice
water

Isalnd2 - greendrop island
Poison
Bug
Ground
Grass

Isalnd 3 - Charredoil Island
Rock
Steel
Electric
Fire

Island 4 - Mysteria Island
Ghost
Psychic/Dark (2v2)
Fighting
Dragon;149;

Four gyms are dumb its like the orange islands in the anime. I think they should stick with eight gyms cause the game would be more diffuclt and they would put more of a challenge. It's also like saying you want the elite 4 to be weak.

On the other hand, regions shouldn't be watered down the way they were in GSC.

Read carefully people

It says 5 islands - 4 of those islands contain 4 gyms on them, therefor giving us 16 gyms in total

Nice try with the idea but I seriously don't see it happening

It's an interesting concept...but I'd rather not have tons of islands again. There's something better, in my opinion, about having a massive continental region. I hate the repetition of surfing in RSE, and this would be quite similar.

Ick. Too much Surfing. I mean, yeah, my water pokemon always end up with Surf, but I hate how it's "wild tentacool" over and over and over.

What I would like to see are gyms not based on type, and maybe based on other things.

For instance, you can fight at the sleep gym, and find out that theteam consists of a Jigglypuff, Breloom, and Drowzee, all with sleep induction moves, and a Tauros as well to dish out nasty rest/sleeptalking pain.

Or, you could have a crippler gym, equipped with an annoying Pidgeotto with Feather dance and Sand attack, an intimidating Gyarados, and a Leech Seeding, Stun Sporing Venusaur.

Seriously, type based gyms are becoming redundant and not very interesting. We need to see new things!

I agree that we need to see some new things and that's a REALLY good idea, it would be pretty easy to prevent predictability since most pokemon types are more similar than are pokemon with an attack or two in common.

These are all the effects that I can think of at the moment.
No effect (tackle)
Add damage (wrap, slash, thief)
Flinch (bite, headbutt)
Status (attract, yawn )
Enfeebling (sand attack)
Enabling (sword dance, double team)
Healing and recovering (moonlight)
Countering (destiny bond)

Wow, a coincidence how there's eight. The fact that all gyms use this one dimensional form of battle could be a lesson to trainers to use ALL available tools for a good battle.

Bring it.
Although we are getting tired of the gyms being too predicatable, we don't want the gyms to be too unpredictable. Hundreds of pokemon can use tackle, 75% of the pokemon population uses sand attack etc. The gyms would be way off. We also have consider the new pokemon that are coming out with the games.

I think that the each gym in DP should use a specific strategy instead of just a type like some of you have stated. Maybe gyms that use a specific weather or gyms would use pokemon only from a specific habitat like cave or forest(FRLG pokedex). This way the gyms would use a wide veriety of pokemon types yet each gym would be unique.

the game should be limited to 8 gyms.

the only problem I have with 8 gyms is after the Elite 4 it gets a boring game. Il iked GSC 16 gyms but I think 8 would be for the best. ;280; ;101;

Type-based GYMs fail at life. D: Have them based on stats or whatever, much like the main battles (Cipher admins, colosseum battles, area leaders in MT. Battle, etc...) in Colo/XD imho.

So agreed. So agreed...

There's only one Type that hasn't got a single GYM so far: Dark. However, I'm all for the ditching of the Monotype trend altogether... or even the GYM/E4 set-up for that matter (Though that's much more unlikely...).

There are MANY things a GYM can be based off. For example, the first GYM could be a small girl specialized in small Pokémon (Natu, Diglett, and such.). Another one could use heavy Pokémon. Others could focus on Stats or strategies... there are MANY things besides Type that tie certain Pokémon together.

Yes, I know the Type thingy makes it easier to beginners to get used to Type match-ups and yadda-yadda, but I think Pokémon should move away of this beginner-friendly attire. Include the Type Chart in the Instruction Booklet, as you did in RBY... but never did again for whatever reason.

Plus, the lack of focus in a certain Type would make the game oh SO MUCH harder, at least for Pokémon standards. You can always attract new players with your over-cutesy marketing wh*res, but don't butcher the game anymore, plz. I'll cry if this franchise, that can still be saved, suffers the same fate as Final Fantasy... :(

Creative thinking but I would hate the island thing. For one I hate surfing and I would prefer a big continental area and a few islands.

This was my idea I posted in the Diamond/Pearl "Gameplay Ideas" thread.

Instead gym leaders using certain types, they instead have a battling style. This battling style isn't limited to a certain type like fighting-type or steel-type; any pokemon can be used to fit the style.

gym leaders fighting style with:
- based on attack & special attack
- based on defense & special defense
- high speed
- high accuracy
- constant recovery (rest, leech seed, ingrain)
- inflicting status ailments (confusion, poison, spikes, burn)
- using status boosts (swords dance, baton pass)
- fighting in environment (hail, sandstorm, rain dance, sunny day)

... Now those would be some interesting gym leaders to compete against. A true challenge for all aspiring trainers to become pokemon masters. Plus, with each battle you will learn something about battling that you may not ordinarily think of. And aren't gyms supposed to strengthen a trainer's skill? Now getting a badge actually has significance. It represents something more than just "See, I can beat a trainer that uses one type for all their pokemon."

And same goes the elite 4. They need some strategy that are absolute. Maybe something along the lines of...

elite four use strategy of:
- breeded pokemon to have variety of moves
- best way of using held items (charcoal, leftovers, shoal bell)
- using a pokemon's ability in conjuction with its moves really well
- using hidden power, individual and effort values, and such to their advantage

I would also like to add that the elite four's pokemon may not be the same everytime you fight them. They will have 3 different parties and each time you fight them, one of those 3 parties is randomly used.

With this setup of gym leaders, the player is learning something more than just what type can beat another beat another type of pokemon, which is told in the booklet / instruction manual. It's like an in-game tutorial... but much more fun.

This also gives reason for why trainers inside the gym use the same type of pokemon as the gym leader (and they wonder why they can't beat the gym leader). If the gym leader has a particular battle style, then the gym trainers are currently under the tutelage of the gym leader. They are perfecting that style.
