I arrive at the mall on this hot Chicago day, hoping for a chance to go to New York. I've asked my friends and got my team rated online. They said I didn't have a chance. I wanted to prove them wrong, I prove anyone.
I am 14, competing in the 13+ bracket. My cousin and I were going to compete seeing, if we could get far. My team consisted of
Kyogre
Gengar
Latios
Metagross
Snorlax
Mewtwo
A standard, uberish, nubish team. But I wanted to win. That's all I wanted.
Registration starts, and we stand in line for 15 minutes before getting to go. I see all types of people, big or small, tall or short, white or black, every kind of person was practically there.
After waiting a half hour for the brackets, we get to see them. My cousin, Brendan, and I look. We face each other. The tournament went in order of the line, and they did not randomize at all.
We walk into the arena, and hook up our Gameboys. After all the technical stuff was out of the way, our battle commenced. He sent out his Gengar and his Latios, while I sent out Mewtwo and Metagross.
I quickly started off by Calm Minding with Mewtwo, and then Agillity. Many people question stat raising on the first turn, but it did help. Mewtwo took a small hit, but Metagross took massive damage from a Gengar Thunderbolt.
I decided to move quickly. My Mewtwo's massive speed and Sp. Atk. let him KO Gengar with an Ice Beam, and Metagross KO'd Latios with a Meteor Mash. He brought out Kyogre and Mewtwo. I decided that it was going to be over and done with. My Mewtwo used Protect, and Metagross exploded, giving me some confidence with this win against my cousin, though I wish he could have had a couple of matches with different people.
I won't go into detail with the next two matches, I plowed over them. Sorry if you are reading this and you know who this is, but I did plow over you.
I moved on. I got to a match where only 8 people were left battling. This is what champions were made of.
I stared down my next opponents team. A Rayquaza, Kyogre, Tyranitar, Mewtwo...adn I don't remember the rest. This is what he used.
I sent out my Kyogre and Snorlax first, and he sent out Rayquaza and Kyogre. Looking back at my team, I was successful because my team was not weak to Ice.
I quickly KO'd his Rayquaza with an Ice Beam on the first move of the match. I felt the momentum sway from there. I protected with Snorlax on the first move to feel him out. I don't know what he did, but he didn't hurt me or Calm Mind.
Next turn, he brought out his Mewtwo. My Kyogre continued, but this time I slowed down and used Calm Mind. His Mewtwo used Psychic on my Snorlax, doing almost nothing. My confidence was way up. His Kyogre Thundered mine, and it didn't even do half. But wait...Kyogre was paralyzed! Ugh! Great, just great.
Next turn, I set my Kyogre to Thunder his, and then a Shadow Ball over to Mewtwo from Snorlax. The first Shadow Ball did not even take out half, so I was chipping away.
His Kyogre struck first, and again, I see that luck rolled his way. A critical hit on my Kyogre. I was angry. He got lucky twice. I Shadow Balled his Mewtwo to get him in red.
I sent out Metagross. This turn, I protected with Snorlax and used Earthquake with Meta. Kyogre used Water Spout, and it took out my Metagross.
It went downhill from there, as Mewtwo used Recover and his luck continued. I eventually lost this Quarterfinal Match with sour taste in my mouth. The game was going my way, and luck would end it.
But that's why we love Pokemon, right?
